I reckon the only people making mad money out of this are the pharmaceutical companies (eventually), rice growers, and - inexplicably - toilet paper manufacturers.

It’s one of the least expandable consumption categories you can get.

Coronavirus isn't the most dangerous disease out there by a country mile, but the rapidity with which it is spreading and its high complication rate means that it is (and will continue to) placing a lot of pressure on healthcare systems that aren't set up to deal with a massive influx of sick people on top of the regular demands placed upon them.

The fact that the best way to combat its spread is self-quarantine means a lot of financially vulnerable people need to choose between acting as vectors or potential unemployment and bankruptcy only adds to it.

The virus itself isn't much to be concerned about, but the economic implications of a pandemic are massive. This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. The death toll will be large in developing countries or those without efficient healthcare (such as the US), but it is the jobs lost, the businesses that go under, and the unmanageable healthcare bills that are going to be the real toll it takes.

As somebody who works in tourism, I'm already seeing businesses either go under or have to aggressively downsize to deal with the rash of cancellations they're facing.
