I really think the average quality of the game has taken a big down turn over the past couple of years too, on and off the field.

The nuffies in the NRL forum don't want to hear it, but the game is stagnating and the on-field product has never been less exciting IMO.

Agree. The emphasis of athleticism over footballer and the overuse of the same backline movement (which is a shepherd 25 years ago) has seen the quality of the game impacted.

It's the whole fight fire with fire attitude pervading the NRL. At best, you get 2010 dragons, at worst you get 2012 Parramatta. The strategy can be beaten, it's just that no one tries to best it, just match it.

With the game day experience what are they now doing that they were not doing (or vice versa)?

It's a lot of little things, I don't have the time right now to type up a spiel but basically it has turned from a community hub on game day to the same sterile environment you get at every other league stadium in the country.

True story the Viet cong used to hide behind trees in Vietnam when they saw the yanks with the M16 because they couldn't shoot through the trees. They saw Aussie soldiers with SLR's and they ran yelling big gun. Easily chop down trees with the old SLR and M60.

When I was still living in the Ville and the Cowboys first started even though they got hammered all the time the community really got behind them, last time I went back up there it just seemed meh the Cowboys.

Dude. Ine all seriousness.... From a non Dragons fans perspective... 2010 was one of the most boring years of Football I can remember.

I know you get all glassy eye'd when you talk about it and I can't blame you, but from an entertainment perspective, that year was poo.

TBH, ever since the wrestle has come into vogue, footy has been less entertaining.

The good Dogs and Eels sides of the 80's and some of the Bronco's sides of the 90's were electrifying but nowadays, it's all just play by the numbers. Be the best at the wrestle, win the ruck and march up field one out and then kick to the corners.

The last team I remember that won the title playing enjoyable footy was the Broncos in 2006. Loved their style. '08 Manly did alright too I guess.

People tried to match because we blew teams off the park up the middle.

Anyway, the point I was trying to make is the fundamentals of rugby league have been lost in the shine of athleticism and the attempt to turn the game into entertainment rather than maintain the core of the sport.

That style can be beaten, we just need the coaches to do it. Who would lead the charge amongst the current coaching staff? No one, they're all too hampered by needing results to try anything. Come in the bottom eight, and you're immediately under fire. No room for trying and failing, so copy the play that works, regardless of how crap your team is. Annoys me.

The style of Footy needed to do it is far too inconsistent to ever be attempted again on a regular basis.

Nowadays, if you are inconsistent as a football team, your coach is under the pump and chances are he will be gone at the first sign of a losing streak.
