Mao is revered as a figure of Godlike intelligence and brilliance here, but that's mostly because not doing so results in a sudden disappearance. The guy made more stupid decisions than good by a far stretch.

You kidding? The Inner West is no more expensive than what I was paying for rent in Newcastle or Armidale.

Work sucks sometimes. I am currently in hot water for looking after a massive customer of mine - enter office politics and dickwads looking to throw their weight around to impress the higher ups and we cop the blame.

It amazes me how some people can be so sleazy, self-serving and vile, and still look other people in the eye.

Yep, I was in the same situation (but split four ways) with a place on Berner Street in Mereweather. Fusebox was rusted to the point of shedding whenever you opened the door, windows slammed shut if you didn't prop them up with a stick, roof leaked, back shed was barely standing, cockroaches everywhere, water backed up if you showered (and stank)... it was revolting despite being in a nice part of the city.

For $250 a week, I was renting a large three bedroom place in Marrickville within 10 minutes walk of the train station and with all utilities included.

Cost of living is something like 14% lower in Melbourne. Melbourne is high, but not in the same league as Sydney.

Take it from someone who has spent way too many hours browsing how much rooms to rent are going for in both cities. One of the major reasons I'm picking Melbourne is they have many more homes in the inner city, and the greater supply means more competitive rent. I'm finding heaps of quality close to the city for between $150 and $180 a week. The equivalent in Sydney is well over $200 because they only have half an inner city thanks to the geniused position of the CBD.

when I moved back to Sydney in 2003, my sister and I, were paying $185 for a 2br flat in Croydon, with city views. The same flat now, is $410. I'm finding it really difficult to save a cent, paying the $420pw that I am now.

Well... where are you living now? $420 pw must be close to the city (or within the inner-west).

Given it was a 3 bedroom place, I would think the total rent was $750 per week, and Mis had just one room.
