You're like Lex Luther or something, BF. Genius.

You see, morale in the office would dip, and those who made the effort to come in today would be disgruntled that they had to pick up the slack for those lazy buggers, particularly given that everyone here has laptops and can work from home if need be.

Why should those who came in have to do their work?

While that quote is pretty typical media BS, it's also kinda true. Why did it take a broken neck to rub the tackle out? Particularly after McCracken.

Personally I hope he sues and wins big. If the forklift rolled on me at work I'd sure as shit be doing the same. He's no different to any other injured worker except that he is far luckier and has fans etc. At the same time he's also in one of the worst injury spectrums, so luck is relative.

The NRL can penalise and discourage a tackle all it wants, but it cannot 'stop' the behaviour, so to speak. If a player chooses to put a player in a dangerous tackle, the NRL is not in control of the players behaviour. Adam Ritson's tackle by John Lomax is a good example; stiff arms have always been outlawed but he did it anyway.

I agree that the NRL did not have a ruleset that discouraged tackles like McLean's, but then - it didn't have rules to discourage chicken wings etc until they came into effect.

I should also qualify that I'm not against him getting the money he needs to live a comfortable life. I just don't think he should get it via suing. I think the NRL has been generous in paying him; perhaps the better avenue would be to approach them first and outline what he truly needs and ask for assistance there. If they refuse it, then... well, I'd have no problem getting the courts involved.

see i find it not so much frustrating as know he's going to need a lot of financial support to live a normal life - and the $1.1m + his NRL job may seem like a lot, but whatever he needs for standard living items like housing or transport will need customisation, and that comes at a cost.. not to mention carers, medical bills etc..

things we take for granted - being able to just go out and buy a car that suits us, to live in a top storey apartment (or a multi level house) or even to just get into a taxi when we need to - he won't be able to do any of these things.

lets say he invests the $1.1 into a house - and by the time he gets an adequate house that is kitted out for him there isn't much change left out of that.. and what if, like most people, he wants to move in 5-10 years? similar issue again..

he's still in his early 20's.. so much more of his life to live.. so much more in front of him that is going to cost more than it costs you and i.. simply because whatever he needs is not likely to be 'standard'..

and pretty sure it's not about a greed thing... i'm sure if you ask him if he'd prefer $5m or to be able to be fit & healthy, i guarantee which one he'd choose..

i think about things like being able to walk along a beach, with my daughter on my shoulders, feeling the sand between my toes as i do this.. something he is unlikely to be able to do in his lifetime..

not having a go at you mate, just flagging issues that a lot of people don't know :)

I don't disagree with any of the above. I just feel like it is unreasonable to go to the courts without engaging the NRL first (if, in fact, he hasn't).

I also think there's an element of risk involved in the sport, which you undertake when you step on the field. There's always a chance of death driving formula 1, but drivers undertake it anyway. Should the F1 be sued for every death?

It's a tension, I realise.

I'm doing the Relay for Life next weekend on what has proven to be my last weekend on campus.

Massive planning fail on my part, but it'll be nice to do some small amount of good.

procastination disease

Had a report which was meant to be due today. Now due monday, but there were bonus marks for getting it done today. But that wont happen (unless there is a minor miracle). And i still have a stupid amount of work due this week, so it would've been good to get this out of the way

:(

Dominated the volleyball courts in two games tonight. I feel like I've earned a beer, but I don't drink alone >_<
