BM I simply asked that because IMO as a fellow non-smoker I don't think we can judge if branding make people take up smoking. I do believe that people take it up due to peer preasure or influence from their close friends. The brand colours may influence brand loyalty.

I think the biggest influence is parentage

The statistic is something like you're 65% more likely to take up smoking if you have a parent who smokes

No of course not (contrary to popular belief I'm not stupid). Just because branding hasn't affected me or some of the people on here doesn't mean it has never affected anyone in the history of smoking.

Can't see BM's quoted posts on my laptop, but I would hazard a guess that he's the idiot that thinks that this plan packaging thing will be effective?

You'd think if you saw the damage smoking can do to your parents it would put you off smoking, but i guess not!

If the government is serious about preventing smoking, the answer is simple.

Make it illegal.

Otherwise leave us to make our own decisions on a completely legal product.

I'm happy with the current situation - don't make it illegal, just limit where it can take place.

You know what? Call me a wowser but if people (myself included) want to damage their health by consuming products that are clearly toxic, then let the government tax them.

We spend so much time complaining about hospitals and schools not receiving funding - why shouldn't we use the money raised from sales of these items to 1. treat the people who put themselves there through consumption of those products and 2. educate people about the dangers of said products.

I'm totally against criminalizing smoking. It solves no problems. Keep it legal but make it as hard as possible to do. Because that way it still gets taxed and the burden it places on the health system is paid for (at least in part). If you ban it you lose all the tax money but still have people filled with cancer and other smoking related illnesses coming into hospitals because they buy it on the black market and the burden to the taxpayer remains there without being paid for.
