Going ok at the moment 0-123 with Cowan and Hughes at the crease, Sussex must suck...

I've heard the pitch is as close to a road as you can possibly get without actually playing on concrete, if Cowan and Hughes don't make hundreds then they've failed on that pitch against that opposition.

Sussex are coming 2nd in FIRST division with just 1 loss in 11 matches.

Maybe just maybe Hughes and Cowan have done well to see off the new ball and smartly build their partnership?

If they both get to 100 look for some heavy artillery fireworks as they let loose.

Yep, 120 for no loss in the first session against an elite 1st class club is a shit effort.

You're a joke. You'd be saying the exact opposite thing if it was people competing for Hughes' position.

Here's their bowling attack:

Hatchett: 9 matches 22 wickets at 30.86 S/R 49.2 Econ: 3.76
Jordan: 55 matches 149 wickets at 31.89 S/R 53.6 Econ: 3.56
Liddle: 18 matches 24 wickets at 46.41 S/R 86.0 Econ: 3.23

Certainly not a great attack. Their only decent bowler is Panesar.

Ok Liddle is ordinary but the other two getting wickets at 30 and 31 is just fine. They might not be test cricketers but they're still solid first class bowlers.

And it is not a road by the sounds of it from someone who is actually watching the game:

Averaging 30 with the ball in FC is not as good as you think it is.

Good bowlers will average mid to low 20's in FC.

Run of the mill bowlers will average over 30.

Cowan probably needed a century to get himself in the conversation for the test team.

And how are these runs any less valuable than when Warner got a big ton at the same time as Maxwell against a bunch of Saffer second stringers.

Malcolm The Conn knows what's what.

The BBC Sussex blokes are a bit tedious thus far.

For the sake of completeness...BM

http://www.espncricinfo.com/the-ashes-2013/content/story/655359.html

Although the openers did not make the most convincing of starts - plenty of edges flew wide or short of the cordon in the early stages and Hughes was dropped on 22 - they survived and both reached half-centuries.

Cowan had reached 57 at lunch and Hughes was on 70, although he was lucky to still be there after being given a life by Chris Nash, who at second slip put down a straightforward edge off Chris Jordan. Jordan was comfortably the most challenging fast bowler in the Sussex attack, which without Steve Magoffin and James Anyon was missing two of its three leading County Championship wicket takers this season.

Hughes scored heavily behind square early in his innings, often off thick edges, but also played some much more impressive back-foot drives.

Hughes has always been a good first class cricketer it's when he has to step up against the test quality bowlers that he has failed. Hughes needs test runs not first class runs to silence his critics.
