Hughes has always been a good first class cricketer it's when he has to step up against the test quality bowlers that he has failed. Hughes needs test runs not first class runs to silence his critics.
Dismiss first class runs as much as you like but we have very few batsmen in their 20s who are able to score multiple centuries in a first class season. This isn't 10 years ago. We do not have the depth we once had. Hughes and Khawaja are the clear standout batting talents of their generation. They are the cream of the crop.

The simple fact of the matter is, there is noone better in the cupboard.

Hughes out for 84. Solid knock batting for 166 minutes. He has now scored 45 plus in 7 of his last 8 test/first class game.

You are completely missing the point, I am not dismissing Hughes first class runs but rather questioning whether he can transfer that ability to score runs at first class level to test cricket. Hughes has had 26 test matches to show that ability he regularly displays at first class level in the test arena and so far his failed to do so.

For all the "improvements" that Hughes has supposedly made, he is actually doing worse since being recalled to the test side:

Test Career before recall: 17 matches Average of 34.58 3 Centuries
Since being recalled: 9 matches Average of 28.93 0 Centuries

On topic, all of a sudden we are 4/258. That includes Smith 42 n.o. of 122 balls. Certainly not easy going.

Hughes and Cowans partnership looking better and better in context.

stumps aust 5/354

smith 98* (155 balls)
not bad for supposedly not easy batting and in context with hughes and cowan

Warner will come in for Hughes for the 3rd test.

We've seen the same thing over and over with Hughes. Teases the selectors with runs in low key first class matches but then becomes a scared little rabbit in the headlights at test level.

The selectors can't be dumb enough to fall for it yet again after he gets runs last night with a bunch of edges through slips and dropped catches. If he plays the 3rd test will fail to reach double figures again.

If Warner most come in, he comes in for Rogers or Watson. I'd prefer he came in for nobody.

No. Once again you are just predicting what you want to happen. Rogers & Watson aren't going anywhere. Warner comes into the middle order which means either Smith or Hughes goes. Smith is about to get a ton and is a handy bowling option so it's bye bye Phil.

Smith can play spin well & HAH has NFI..

HAH isn't a good enough fielder or bowler to have any chance in a choice between him & Smith..

Rogers is 35 and hardly a long term option, i'd rather Hughes to open than keep a 35 yr old never was. I'd rather they stick with Hughes, oozie,Smith or Warner for the next little while and if they are found wanting bring in the next best options. Not keeping around blokes who are band aid solutions. In the mid 80's we stuck by what we thought were the best options and give them time to show what they can do and we pretty much have to do the same now.

I'd keep Smith over HAH any day, Smith has proven to be a more formidable batsmen and can bowl a bit, most of the deliveries Smith has got out to have actually been plumb balls whilst HAH just stupidly hands over his wicket each time.

Sussex declare 7-368.

We have 60 overs to bat.

Cowan and Khawaja opening the batting. That tells you all you need to know about how certain Hughes' place is in the test team. If his place was at risk he'd be opening to get the best chance to prove himself. Not opening means he doesn't need to prove himself because he's already a certain starter

Edit: Khawaja out for 1. HAH to the crease.
