tahu to the wing

What a load of rubbish. Burt NEVER gets the set of six off to a good start. He gets dominated every time he runs the ball from a kick return scoot/hitup. That's a fact. Have a look at his stats for 2010 & tell me otherwise.

How about giving a yound winger a chance who has size; will contest & take high balls; doesn't get dominated on kick returns + have the speed & agility. Having a few good qualities for a winger doesn't cut it these days - you need to possess a skill in all of them - granted you'll be better in some than others - but Burt is non-existent under the high ball & his metres gained on kick returns are DOMINATED. Therefore he is letting the team down in those very important areas. Think Kearney will be demanding a lot more discipline in those areas.

This.

Not only does he get dominated every tackle, IMO he's hands down the laziest player in League.

Spot on God-King Dean.

The guy only wants to get involved when the line is open or in broken play. The guy has got good speed & agility but he won't get down & do the dirty work that wingers need to do. Both wingers need to do that work not just one. Don't know if its laziness but more self-preservation.

as it is, we're one first grade centre short because the apparent long term injury to Reddy, putting T there would make life very interesting for SK trying to find a couple of centres to play fg.

I would think ben Smith bac to the centres and Shackleton into the backrown with Horo and the legend. Unless Humble can play centre.

I think the problem with moving Benny back to the centres is that he is such a brilliant back-rower, but unfortunately it may come down to that. We have to keep Tahu in the centres I think, no point weakening a position and potentially kicking out one of two good wingers. If Reddy is injured at the start of the season, I believe Taniela Lasalo can fill in, as he is a capable centre. I think we should leave Justin Horo where he is in the backrow.

That's just my opinion anyway, hopefully drastic measures won't have to be taken.

Tahu will be centre with Reddy, if Reddy isn't fit for Round 1 i would say Jordan Atkins and Karl Filiga will be the next guys up to take his spot. Wouldn't move Ben Smith. Back row of Hindy, Smith and Shack will be awesome.

what about Justin Horo?

Did a great job coming off the bench last season and i think can add the same spark if kearney uses him like that again. But i would think he and shack would be fighting it out for 13.

I would go with Shack just based on experience and he hindy and ben smith will be doing the dirty work at the begining, bring on horo after about 20-25 and he can play his attacking game.

Yeah Horo was good last season, but at this stage playing the full 80 minutes may be out of his depth. Shacks should start if fit, and best thing about Shacks is he can mix it up and play in the front row if Horo is able to play more minutes.

I just think Smith has matured and can handle the switch back, backrow is certainly his better position, but we have more depth in the backrow, Lasalo could be an option though. I do think Lasalo deserves a crack at top 17 to backfill Mateo.

i love burty but i'm not sure if he is a automatic pick in the back line.
if tahu was to go to the wing we would need to fill his role with someone who wont be a weakness.

I agree Burt is a liability in some key areas but he is also brilliant (game-changingly so) in other areas. Plus his goalkicking is up there with the best in the game.

With us light on centres, Tahu will (and should) play centre. Jordan Atkins has played some centre and might fill in for Reddy if he's not ready, but I also think Ben Smith is an extremely credible option, since centre is such an important defensive position that we just mightn't be able to find anybody else to cover there.

It's the reason we got rid of Wright - poor defence.

Guys like Filiga and Lasalo, who can play both back-row and centre, would be better off playing back-row this early in their careers because a poor defensive read at centre is more likely to lead to a line-break (and is further from the cover defence). That's why we're better off moving Ben Smith to centre than having a rookie cover for Reddy's absence.

This would also allow both Shackleton and Horo to start, which won't otherwise happen in a back-row that already includes Hindmarsh and Smith.

If Shackleton is to be used at front-row then he shouldn't play back-row in the same match.

With a 4 prop rotation (which pretty much every team is using), you ask a lot of those 4 players and therefore can't expect them to play much more than about 40 minutes a match - they should be making close to 20 hit-ups and over 20 tackles in that time, as well as sliding to cover the gaps on shift plays and continual movement off the ball in attack.

So using one of your 4 front-rowers in the back-row for part of a match means the other 3 have to play more minutes to cover for him. Obviously then, the quality of those extra minutes is reduced.

What is the obssession with having perfect players from 1 to 17 in the side? It is just not possible, nor is it practical.

People, your dislike for Burty aside, he brings a wealth of positives to the table:

* Experience (though as much as I admire him I will admit he sometimes feels the pressure and it puts him off his game)

* Great instincts

* He is loved by coaches and teammates alike (NEVER underestimate this effect)

* Goal-kicking, as well as general play kicking

* Speed

* Versatility

You simply cannot have a team of 17 Hindy and Haynes.

For the record, I'd have Burt over the likes of Morris, Burt brings more to a team than just superb finishing.

That comment just goes to show that you have absolutely no idea.

Morris won a comp, played Origin & is currently playing for Australia. Burt is facing an uphill battle to hang onto his wing spot with the signings of Walker & Atkins. He scored nearly 20 tries this year.

True. It would be good if there was competition for all spots that if you're in bad form you're dropped & replaced. Obviously class players like Hayne & Hindmarsh would still be a better option out of form than a average first grader.
