knights say no as timana tahu leaves eels

not wanted ... Timana tahu. source: the daily telegraph

rick stone says he would "never say never" at the right price but can't see newcastle throwing discarded eel timana tahu a career lifeline.

the knights coach admitted yesterday the club had made discreet inquiries about tahu a couple of months ago but didn't get past first base and have since moved on.

"we re-signed doogy [adam macdougall] after that and, to be honest with you, we are done and dusted as far as outside backs go," he said.

"it wouldn't be fair on the young blokes we already have at the club."

the knights have been linked to tahu during his much-publicised dramas at parramatta because his wife kasey and their two children have moved to newcastle to be closer to her family. Stone said he has not spoken to the former kangaroo and wallaby star or his manager since the problems at parramatta emerged.

Asked whether the knights might consider revisiting tahu if he was offered to the club at a vastly reduced rate, stone remained cautious.

"look, i suppose you'd never say never because he's a player of ability but we'd need some assurances from him and, even then, we'd still need to be comfortable as far as our own players are concerned," he said.

Parramatta and tahu will officially part company today.

A meeting between tahu's manager warwick wright, eels coach steve kearney and club ceo paul osborne will confirm the former waratahs star has ended his brief yet controversial stint at parramatta.

I'll be very surprised if Tahu is not a Knight in 2011.

That article summed up in 8 words 'Stone will sign tahu for 100k or less'

I do agree with what Alex said, he'll always be a hero and favorite of the club. Our 'freak' during our most successful years.

I was filthy as anyone about a lot of T's 2010 but i suppose thinking in depth about it it's like forgiving a long lost family member and offering them a lifeline when they've hit rock bottom.

I wouldn't be too upset either way.

OK...proof about this Idris thing or I call bullsh*t. NIGC said he read it somewhere - give us a link.

The thing is everyone is worried about T and his issues - yet Newcastle is the very place he has run to escape those issues. He didn't have those issues when he was at Newcastle.

Seeing a theme here?

I'm certainly not suggesting we give him the $400K he was supposedly on at Parramatta - that is stupid overs. But if he wants to get his sh*t together here and do it at a cut price, then I'm OK with that. Despite all of what has happened he is still one of the heroes of the club. He won a grand final with us.

We might just be what he needs, and you know what? I think he might just be what we need.

I read it as well.

Saturday or Sundays Telegraph, sport section, regional news.

Off contract next year, we have let his manager know we might be keen after that.

100% agree after thinking about it for a $100k or less he's a great signing, and away from the Sydney life and back in his comfort zone he should be able to get his sh!t together hopefully.

On his end of 10 form? If he comes he it definitely is on our terms, but i don't see him as a necessity.

We know what he is capable of, but when was the last time we sore that?

What does that then make the pecking order?

1. Mad dog
2. Tahu
3. Sau
4. Likiliki

Based on a happy Tahu?

1. Sau
2. Tahu
3. Doogs
4. Likiliki

Based on the fact that this surely has to be Doogs final year, and that we could easily lose Sau at the end of his contract. I still think we are kinda light-on in the centre department. We could actually end up with Tahu/Likiliki in 2012 and still be looking for depth?

Tahu for less than $100K is a bargain and we would be stupid to knock it back on the basis we get some assurances from him that he is going to work on getting his sh*t together.

It's not that I don't think he can add to the team, I can see reason to sign him... but if he isn't playing well or can't get his sh*t together i don't like the idea of him taking priority of Likiliki or Sau, who atm are the long term prospects in the team.

If we can help give T a clear head and be happy about his life and football, he can help us in return. It can be mutually beneficial. And if it is on not much more than match payments it could very well be the buy of 2011.

I actually thought he went OK at the start of the season - he lost the plot after Origin.

We lost the last 5 seasons because QLD have absolutely owned us. Not because we picked guys like Tahu. They have been stronger across the field, 1 through to 17. It is a generation thing unfortunately.

Hence why i said one of the reasons. Picking players that clearly dont deserve to be there goes a long way to losing more games/series.

No suggestions who should have been there then?

There was very little outcry as to his selection before he kicked up a fuss about the racism...

I wouldn't have picked Tahu for NSW either (even before his form got even worse post origin)...but of course thats easy for me to say now.

Knights offer to lend Timana Tahu an ear
BY BRETT KEEBLE
07 Dec, 2010 01:00 AM

THE Knights have offered troubled dual international Timana Tahu their support but not a lifeline to rejoin the club and resume his NRL career.
Tahu, who recently agreed to terms on a new deal with Parramatta reportedly worth $300,000 for next year, is understood to have parted company with the Eels after being absent from training and other club commitments for the past two weeks.
The 30-year-old former NSW and Australian rugby league and rugby union representative’s career remains in limbo amid reports he is trying to resolve personal issues, and it has been reported his wife Kasey and three children are living in Newcastle to be closer to her family.
Knights chief executive Steve Burraston, who coached Tahu in Newcastle’s lower-grade teams earlier in his career, offered to help the 2001 premiership-winner ‘‘in any way we can’’.
‘‘Some time ago I left a couple of messages for him and he hasn’t returned those calls. That was out of concern to make sure he was OK, so I haven’t spoken to him for a while,’’ Burraston said.
‘‘We certainly value him. He’s one of our juniors and spent a lot of time at the club but right at this time, as far as we’re concerned, he’s still contracted to Parramatta and we probably wouldn’t have any room for him anyhow.
‘‘I would be happy to help him in any way we can. I consider him a friend . . . so if ‘T’ needs some help, I’m happy to help him personally and offer the club’s support to him as well.’’
Newcastle coach Rick Stone said the Knights spoke to Tahu’s manager, Warwick Wright, earlier this year but made a decision to pursue other options.
Stone said the Knights had little room left under their salary cap and, with the likes of Adam MacDougall, Junior Sa’u, Aku Uate, James McManus, Wes Naiqama, Keith Lulia and Junior Kiwis international Siuatonga Likiliki already on their books, were in the market for a front-row forward rather than another outside back.
‘‘We contacted Timana’s manager a few months ago but we didn’t get too much out of that and from there we moved on and made other decisions,’’ Stone said.
‘‘Signing Adam MacDougall was obviously one late in the year, and there were a few other decisions a little bit earlier like signing Likiliki.
‘‘If anything, we’re on the lookout for a possible forward – preferably a front-rower – and that’s probably the only space we have at the moment.’’
