People whinge over here that the food and piss prices are too expensive at our games, the yanks have somewhat alleviated that problem by tailgating but get bagged for it??? Sometimes I swear people like to whinge for the sake of it.

It's cos we're the gayest little nanny state (well, Sydney is anyway) I've ever been to.

Don't get me wrong - I love a sunburnt country. But we're so over-regulated it's fuggin ridiculous. Baby boomer fun police run the place.

Unfortunately i've never been to an NRL game :( (I live in Canada). My dream is to make it back to Australia (i was there for 6 months, 5 years ago), and check out a SOO game and some club games. So I can't speak on the atmosphere around the grounds for NRL games, but i;ve gone to a few NFL games and College Football games in the US, and there is certaintly NOTHING that tops the atmosphere of a great tailgate.

Toss around the pigskin, bbq some fresh meat, sip some brewskis, play some frisbee, chat with strangers..it just is such an amazing atmosphere, but you really do either need a large car park around the stadium, or a highly residential area with some parks where people could meet and gather.

Outside of the obvious drinking bans around public places the lack of parking around the venues really does ruin it. I mean Leichhardt Oval anyone? Hard enough getting a car spot around there for starters let alone one where you can have a BBQ going.

Brookvale and Cronulla...... can't even get close. Parramatta have the Leagues Club car park and there is ANZ Stadium but even the parking there is incredibly spread out.

Nanny state, right wing rant etc aside

There isn't any carparks around most NRL stadiums, so its not physically possible.

Imagine going to a game at Campbelltown or Penrith.
You have just finished your tailgate party in your decked out van or wagon with Palasma TV screen, gas BBQ and car full of alcohol. You lock up your car, walking into the stadium watch the game and come back to find either a family or bogans living in your car or some bogan has stolen it.

There's parking around both those stadiums, though I'm sure the school over the road from Kograh wouldn't allow beer in their grounds if u park there!

Just as a rebuttal to the stereotype that we are all pissheads and this couldn't happen.

Aren't the Yanks famous for rioting in the streets, smashing cars etc. when there team wins a major title??

Tailgating is actually great fun and a good way to meet other fans.

I can't see it ever taking off here though because there are alot of stadiums with no parking and many of the ones that do have commercial arrangements in place with clubs who also have commercial arrangements with catering firms and allowing it would reduce the value of that contract.

US Stadiums are a different deal as well in the respect that NFL games sell out or go close most of the time and some people tailgate without ever having a ticket and watch the game from TV's

There is next to no parking at Kogarah
There is a decent-sized park right there next to Princes Hwy that could be used, in theory.

I'd say the main reason it won't get any traction (aside from parking concerns) is that the clubs (or stadiums hosting the clubs)) want you inside the ground buying their own drinks

it's a culture thing as well. we don't even talk to strangers in this country let alone gonna have a bbq with some pissed guys in a parking lot.

The idea sounds pretty cool but as others have pointed out we have people here who think the purpose of going to the footy is to get pissed and annoy the f**k out of everyone else. I cna see someone trying to start one of these parties and ending in a brwal...
