DeSean Jackson, Brent Celek and four other Eagles were fined $10,000 each for their end zone celebration after Celek's second-quarter touchdown in the Eagles' 38-10 win over Carolina on Sunday. Jamaal Jackson, Kevin Curtis, Stacy Andrews and Alex Smith also were fined. The players received letters today from the league office via FedEx. After Celek scored on a nine-yard TD reception, he handed the football to Jamaal Jackson. Several players encircled Jackson and DeSean Jackson. Jamaal Jackson spiked the football, at which point DeSean Jackson flopped to the ground. The other players -- Celek, Curtis Andrews and Smith -- hopped upon the spike. The clip is on youtube.

DeSean Jackson received a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the celebration, and then a stern warning from coach Andy Reid. Told that he could have avoided the entire mess if he had simply held on to the football, Celek refused to take the blame for $60,000 in fines and said he was appealing his fine. "I was just trying to give it to a lineman to let him spike it," Celek said. Winston Justice also was fined $5,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on a run by Brian Westbrook. He also said he'd appeal. These fines come after the league decided that the hit on Donovan McNabb in the end zone by Panthers defensive tackle Damione Lewis was legal and not worthy of a fine. McNabb, of course, fractured a rib on the play.

I didnt realise the rules were so strict now days, what on earth brought this ridiculous crap on?

Seriously, for the life of me i cant see the issue, so long as the celebration doesnt go for too long or is in poor taste, whats wrong with a quick harmless ball spike?

Why is this any different to a guy running and jumping into the stands as i saw happen 2-3 times on the weekend?!

Again, im new to the sport, is there any reason why for this kill joy stuff?

As much as I love the NFL and what they've accomplished as a product, they have some stupid rules.

All I ever read about are 'blackouts'. Where if you don't get a sellout crowd that game won't be broadcast on TV in that region. How f**kin stupid.

Latest example is the Lions upcoming game against the Vikings, they have 4000 tickets still left to sell, and if they can't sell them by a certain time tomorrow the people of Detroit can't watch the game on TV.

That just hurts the NFL of gaining new fans, it's as if they are that far up themselves they believe that these 'blackouts' aren't gonna affect fans.

i think jeff fisher got cut when he saw the rams doing the bob n weave after they scored their tds in the superbowl and he recommended it be banned the following season. he had a position on some board which looks at nfl rules.

And he still does have a position on the competition committee. It's ridiculous.

The referees gave the penalty per the rules but I don't think the rules are correct.

I, for one, didn't find it offensive or inflammatory. I fail to see why they should ban that sort of stuff in the first place.

Then it's horribly inconsistent - how many times have we seen a DB take a pick and do the "Hercules" pose? Or a DT get a sack and jump around "woohooing" and high-fiving his mates? And I don't blame them - make a big play and you have every right to celebrate imo.

Better question. Why are just about all NFL players (especially the africans) such f**king show ponies? Every play, someone has to jump up and ham it up for the crowd. It's the second most annoying thing about watching NFL, after the god damn ads that occur in the live broadcasts every 2 downs.

Are you asking this as an NFL fan? As in, do you know the rules and whatnot? Because the answer is pretty simple - knock down a pass, sack the QB, get a pick, force and recover a fumble, get a first down, etc...They're all big moments. And given the nature of the game (ie: after a big play the teams can consult with their coaches over which play to call next, as opposed to league where it's non-stop), a simple big play like that could end up being the difference between winning and losing.

I am a massive Eels fan. The Eels are my favourite team in my favourite ever sport.

Having said that, though, I have a dream of going to Oakland to watch the Raiders play live. It's such an amazing spectacle - 60,000 capacity crowds, players 'hamming it up'...The atmosphere would be unreal.

Because the answer is pretty simple - knock down a pass, sack the QB, get a pick, force and recover a fumble, get a first down, etc...They're all big moments. And given the nature of the game (ie: after a big play the teams can consult with their coaches over which play to call next, as opposed to league where it's non-stop), a simple big play like that could end up being the difference between winning and losing.

That's pretty much my understanding. Plus celebrations a few years ago were getting to big, almost like they were professionally choreographed. So after a score you would almost be waiting till the last player had arrived before they all performed some little pre-determined script. Over the top & not needed. In regards to Celeks TD, I think you would find that if they hadn't involved 6 or so people it would have been ok.

They live for the moment, and they have so much adrenaline running through their bodies that they are amped up for the moment. If an offensive linesman makes a great pancake block that leads to big yardage, he'll be stoked - everyone goes on about QB's, RB's and WR's as the 'talent' that the big O-linesmen generally go unnoticed. If they make a big blocking play, I reckon they're entitled to get psyched up.
