Burt at Fullback is a decent option but I'd love to see Luke tried in the halves. I know we have a surplus going there but I really think that he will perform well there. He is a player that always gives 110%. Maybe a future line-up could have he and Witt in the halves, Thorman off the bench.

I think Luke Burt is more of a runner and his strength is in backing up. I just dont think he is suited to being the play maker, rather than the the guy the play is made for!

5/8 is not always a playmaker. And is traditionally a running half. Plus he has kicking options and I think a good football brain.

When a team doesnt have a playermaker at 5/8 they usually have a creative lock and Fullback. Parramatta doesnt have these playermakers at lock and fullback.

Wags has kicking options... WTF?????
I'd have as much faith in Wags as I would have in Widders kicking a successful field goal!!!!! If you have a lazy or incompetant 5/8 it just puts further pressure on the halfback to perform.....

Wags'll be alright. I think him, Hopkins and Morris will all rotate around that area and provide different options at different times. With Ian gone Wags is now our best defender, and could prove pivotal if someone like Thurston starts to bob and weave a bit.

Not all 5/8s are ballplayers.

The better Five-Eighth's arent 'running half's' You need class at Five-Eighth and it is something Parramatta is lacking. Look at the best over the last 20 years, Brad Fittler, Laurie Daley, Wally Lewis. That calibre of player and turn your clubs into Premiership winners!

Can someone please answer me the question on why you would have arguably the best centre in the world in your team but have a player inside him at Five-Eighth who is not capable of getting him the ball??? All centre's need the players inside them to get them the 'money balls'. Let us not forget what Wagon is, he is a running winger who they are trying to create into something he is not.......a Five-Eighth. If Smith wants him in the side ahead of someone more capable, then fine...that is his choice, but play him in a position where he can at least contribute and not limit the teams capabilities.

Effectively with Smith using this kind of tactic it means that he has zero intention on using any type of backline play. If you are going to play Wagon at Five-Eighth he cant be planning on the players outside him being passed the ball, so they might as well put Lyon at Lock or Second Row if this is the case.

The only player with any kind of ball playing ability in the team now is Nathan Cayless. Pearson has been known to offload up front, but his ability to offload at the right team is a bit erratic. If our oppositions this year can stop us going forward and arent intimidated by our forward power then we are easy targets because we dont have many options.

Smith obviously has a plan and it doesnt involve backs. That is fine......if it works. Only time will tell. If it hasnt worked in the first four weeks then Smith needs to show himself the door.

THIS IS THE BIGGEST RISK SMITH HAS DONE SINCE COMING TO THE CLUB. At least he isnt going to go down wondering......

Yeah but if it doesnt work the team is easly changable. Graham to Fullback, Morris to 5/8, Hopkins in Hooker and Witt on the bench. Loads of creativity IMO.

Graham won't be back for a while.....in the mean time we need another option!!.

My suggestion is put Widders in the centre....Veaeliki to The wing.

Why not experiment with Hindmarsh in the backs??....he has the pace & size.

Vaeliki on the bench tells me that Smith probably hasnt announced the team that he intends playing this weekend or he plans a reshuffled team when Vaeliki comes onto the field.

Chipmunk,

after reading one of your messages, I started smelling NEWCASTLE.

Hooker distributes to big forwards to make yards and quick play the balls for maybe 3 or 4 tackles and the remaining attacking plays are left up to Joey.

Do you agree?

That is a great plan when you have the calibre of player like Andrew Johns, but we all now how they go when he is not on the field. We dont have anywhere near that calibre of player in the team. We had some players in the past that have been creative enough to do some good things (ie - Jason Smith), but he is in a class of his own Joey!

I dont have an issue with an 'all forward' team game plan, but you need some variety and other options!

Michael Witt will find his way back into first grade, he's too good not to be there. I think they want to ease him in so he's not a target early on. Whether this is a good approach or not I guess depends on whether we start the year off with a few wins or a few losses. Only time will tell...

My .02. Luke Burt will be a fine fullback. Let him stay there and become the permanent fullback for a few years. Haven't seen Wise, but I do like Petersen's ability to find the tryline out wide and Grothe could be anything if his head is in the right place. Lyon is all class and needs the ball. I would have Morris playing 5/8 where he can give Jamie all the room and ball he needs. Playing Dykes at half isn't that bad a move. This allows Wagon to lock and Hopkins to hooker where he can still make 30+ tackles and give good service to the massive forward pack.

I like the forwards. Would have liked to see a ball player like Widders or Muspratt/Muckert? on the bench, but I'm sure they'll get some gametime as the season wears on. Witt is good, but at this stage not great. I think he could become pretty special given the opportunity. But it looks like Smithy is happy with Dykes' form at half and perhaps Witt is still getting his kick in the pants for off field misedemeanours?

Muckert is out for a couple of weeks with an cheekbone/eye socket injury suffered in the Warriors trial.

Ash Graham, Hinchcliffe, Tsoulos and Williams are also out injured.

I think we need a long term replacement at five-eighth and I think Witt will be it. I think he has all the skills and physical attributes to make it in this position.

If not, I think it would be worth giving Killer a run at the position. He's the most incredibly gifted footballer and just as Brett Kenny was equally adept at five-eighth and centre I reckon Lyon would be too. He is fast, powerful, has a reasonable passing game and even the ability to kick tactically!!

Be MUCH better option than Wagon and then I think we could bring Burt into the centres where I feel is easily his best position.

Burt will be plenty close enough at fullback. Given he is such a great broken field runner and can back-up most breaks he is in an ideal position at the moment.

For Mine,

Burt should be at fullback and base his game ala Lockyer coz he actually is quite similar. They're both Left Footed too for crying out loud. Burt is also smart and will also make use of his wingers in kick returns. Sthing which I didn't particular like about Ash at fullback. Plus, Burty is quick and should be able to cover the back quite easily and chime into attack when he can see sthing happening.

I too would love to see Smithy mold Lyon into a 5/8th. We could then have a general in Dykes at halfbalk and a running 5/8th who can also pass the ball to his outside backs. The more that Lyon gets the ball in his hands, the better we'd be. Furthermore, his attitude to always get on top of his opposition number would shut out alot of opposition 5/8ths.

Finally for Witty, I don't think SMITH thinks he can groom him this 1st half of the year in First Grade as this must be a CRITICAL year for Smith if he doesn't perform. He would probably stick with the more experienced player in the halves.
