I think there's merit to Kata or Fusitua on the wing; tbh, I've always flirted with the idea of Kata on the wing, seeing as he is effectively the winger when he gets the ball anyway. If we wanted a centre who could set up his outside man (Ayshford) and we needed a guy with a bit of versatility on the bench with Luke gone (Lolohea), then why not...

2- Kata
3- Fusitua
4- Ayshford
5- Vatuvei

14- Lolohea

Just watched the reserves game and that was my thinking.
Except I would leave Lolohea off the reserves bench.
Tevaga didn't play last weekend. Is he injured?

I must be the only fan that rates Maumalo and would have him in my 17 every week :confused:

What does he offer that Manu doesn't?

He's like the same player with less pace, less try scoring ability either ball in hand or in the air, and an occasionally shitty attitude that causes him to niggle or give away penalties.

Manu has always survived largely on his try-scoring abilities with early set metres as a nice bonus. I really don't see the latter by themselves as enough to justify a winger's position, especially if he's also prone to conceding the odd silly penalty.

The Warriors are sweating on the fitness of forward trio Simon Mannering, Issac Luke and Charlie Gubb ahead of Friday's round two NRL clash against Melbourne Storm at Mt Smart Stadium.

Mannering and Luke suffered neck and rib injuries respectively before departing early in the second half of Sunday's 26-22 season opening home victory over the Newcastle Knights.

Luke clutched at his ribs after sending a pass in the leadup to centre David Fusitu'a's third try right on halftime. He showed further discomfort after nailing the subsequent conversion but returned after the break, lasting just three minutes before being replaced.

Mannering then headed to the sidelines five minutes later, after being slow to get up following a tackle on Knights fullback Dylan Phythian.

Gubb was concussed late in the match and will need to go through the relevant protocols this week before being cleared to play.

Warriors back-rower Ryan Hoffman said both Mannering and Luke had pulled up well today and it's expected they will be named in coach Stephen Kearney's initial 21-man squad tomorrow.

"I saw both of them this morning and they were certainly moving a lot freer," Hoffman told Radio Sport's D'Arcy Waldegrave.

"We're certainly very hopeful that they're going to be all right for Friday but it's only round two as well, so we don't want to risk any long-term damage for them.

"But if they're a chance of playing you'll definitely see them out there on Friday."

Melbourne have their own injury concerns with front rower and Kiwis test captain Jesse Bromwich expected to miss two to three weeks after suffering a badly dislocated thumb 10 minutes into Friday night's 12-6 win over the Canterbury Bulldogs.

Bromwich told Storm trainers he could feel the bone pierce his skin and it was initially feared he could be sidelined for up to six to eight weeks. A follow-up examination on Saturday revealed no further damage, but concerns remain that potential infection of the wound could delay his comeback.

The 27-year-old was due to be assessed again today but his omission is a blow to last year's grand finalists, who have already lost fellow Kiwis international and 2018 Warriors signing Tohu Harris for eight weeks to a stress fracture in his left foot.

Storm centre Cheyse Blair will make the trip across the Tasman after taking an early guilty plea to a dangerous tackle charge after he was penalised for lifting Bulldogs playmaker Josh Reynolds.

Coach Craig Bellamy is expected to keep Cameron Munster at fullback and youngster Ryley Jacks at five-eighth with Billy Slater not likely to return for at least another week.

Sam Cooke had a good game at dummy half for the reserves.
Also Lino may be considered. Good defender, cleaver footballer and he kicked 8 in a row last week.

My main objection to Maumalo is that he isn't a winger.

Can Lino play hooker though? Has never reeally looked more than average in the halves.

Encouraging news re Luke and Mannering though, you'd have to think we'd be damn unlucky for at least one of them to not be fit. Not too worried re Gubb, we don't lose a lot of Gavet or Sipley slot in. We've no shortage of average props, we just lack good ones! (hopefully Sipley will get there though)

Also a good time to play the storm, if we get Mannering and Luke on board we can match their forwards with Bromwich and Harris out. If we play like we did when we clicked in the first half its game on, but it needs an 80 minute effort with a bit of luck to go our way with injuries. I'm hoping the first quarter against the Knights waas simply first game jitters, we still defended well enough in that period.

Obviously, the Storm are favourites given that they are the better team and they have had an extra couple of days to recover. But we can (and do) beat them reasonably often. We are at home (which somewhat compensates us for the short turn around). And they will be missing Bromwich.

They played ok on the weekend, but didn't set the world on fire.

Game on.

oh and IF Luke and Mannering are both able to play, everything gets a lot easier...

Vatuvei in, Maumalo out.

Tevaga or Clark in, Papalii out.

Jazz was injured I think. And so is roache maybe?

Soooo thin of forwards. If mannering and Luke are out I have no idea what Kearney will do.

As good as Mannering is, he's much easier to cover positionally.

If Luke is out, it will undoubtedly be Clark. He was on an extended bench for the Knights game which must mean that Kearney sees him as cover for Luke.

We can cover Mannering positionally but not at the same level of quality. Particularly when we go to the bench.

But obviously, if you want Ayshford AND Vatuvei, you need to figure out what to with Lolohea.

Do you reckon they have Lolohea locked down in that wing position for at least five rounds, or as long as it reasonably takes to settle him into being a NRL grade winger? I do.

They've picked his position and are investing in him, backing him into making it work for him and the club. His disastrous 2016 can't be repeated.

Sure. He is a big loss in that he is one of our best and most reliable players.

As Benek suggested earlier, it always concerns me when we lose one or two players and then imply we have no chance of winning without them. It's usually Johnson and Mannering.
