Saw this in today's Financial review, and found a source online. Disappointing news.

Telstra Mobile NRL deal collapses

Apr 05, 2010 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) --

Despite previous announcements, a proposed deal for the National Rugby League to offer broadcasting rights to Telstra for the telco's mobile telephone customers has not come to fruition. The agreement may be revived for the 2011 season, and experts note that by then there may be new online devices that offer larger screens more suited to sports event streaming. Live cricket coverage is already being offered by rival Vodafone in Australia.

what a surprise they aren't negotiating with any other phone company, the NRL cartel is alive and kicking!

I reckon they should do it with google/youtube.

No-one else has the infrastructure to make live mobile sports broadcasting work well enough.

There are afew websites that stream live feeds, I'd be surprised if one of them didn't have the technology. Having said that, who wants to watch a game on a mobile phone?

I see this as a good move. The NRL wanted actual real cash money for providing this valuable content, contrary to previous years when Telstra expected it for free, and Gallop stood up for the NRL's financial interest. It's a nice little sign for the upcoming rights negotations that Gallop has developed something approaching a spine.

I must say, the affiliation with Telstra is a sh*t one and the sooner the NRL can f**k them off completely the better.

Don't get too carried away, there's no mention of throwing it open to any other interested phone provider.

Gallop will not be anywhere near the next rights negotiations...hopefully.
