Tennis

The problem I have with the women's tennis is that it's totally devolved into a contest between ball bashing banshees.

Just about the only female tennis player I enjoy watching is Hsieh Su-wei, because she plays tennis with so much style - using grace, nuance, slices, angles.

The women's game also lacks consistent star power at the top. There's like a revolving Iron Curtain of Eastern European women who reach the summit for a year or two and then disappear. They also unanimously have all the personality of a boiled potato.

And Serena's personality basically consists of being a really fake, nasty bitch.

So both in terms of style of play and star power the women's game has been in decline since Justine Henin retired.

100% agree on the ball bashing comment. It’s awful stuff. They have no idea about placement and variety. You could throw Hingis out there and she’d torment the field. Slowed courts don’t help this either...problems are similar in the men’s game.

Hingis was a genius. A better tennis player than Serena imo.

And you're right about the court speeds. They're slowing down everywhere. The AusOpen sped up for a couple of years and no surprise Federer won b2b.

Contrast that with the US Open which has basically become blue clay. Djokovic was totally unbeatable last year because he could return almost everything and retrieve almost anything, too.

I just like to see attacking tennis rewarded as opposed to a wall-a-thon with two players waiting for one to blink.

Even Rafa broke down and wrecked his body playing pong on those US courts b2b2b against Khachanov, Basilashvili and Thiem.

Tennis has too many 1st world problems. Like the outrage over not showing a Serena Williams thrashing because an epic 4hour classic was being shown instead like f**k all these PC principal merkins

And that's the extent of these sad merkins interest in women's tennis.

They're seemingly only interested in the faux equality melodrama. Oh and what outfit Serena is wearing.

None of them are actual women's tennis fans.

The same applies to the media.

Scarcely a genuine analysis of the actual tennis because it's been absolute trash.

The US Open courts are a farce. Djokovic will win it until his body caves in. So slow it’d make a purist weep.

At least the Australian Open is rewarding attacking tennis more so these days and as you point out, no coincidence Fed went back to back. It’s a struggle to watch the Murray/Djokovic push fests. Atheletically incredle contests but the actual tennis is grim.

What a cluster f*ck the 9 telecasts are, having dinner at one of my local pubs last night and watching the match between Alex Bolt and Gilles Simon , Bolt takes the 4th set to level up the match at 2 sets each then 9 switches to the start of the Zvererv vs Chardy match, ffs keep the one match on the one channel, had to find a tv in another part of the pub to see what was happening in the 5th set between Bolt and Simon. Really disliking nine.

I do enjoy watching Ash Barty play, she seems to know how to mix her game up, she has the power shots but has a bit of finesse about her play knowing where to place the ball, she can chip the ball and volley and there is no grunting, screaming or carrying on from her.

Ok so it's tucked away on Go.

My mistake I only watch tv for the sport now so don't know much about all the extra channels.

You're forgiven, 9. Still shit merkins, though.

Qld. On Channel 53.

It wasn't on 52 which has been the 2nd channel. And the news is on 9s main channel. But didn't realise there's another.

Ah yeah...that explains it I suppose. We've had the news already, so main channel is clear.

Can't have the News moving around!

De minaur is cut from the same cloth as Hewitt. Problem is hewitt was a dying breed 15 years ago.

De minaur has to work hard for everything even on his serve which is why i cant see him winning a major or reaching the top 10 in his career. The modern player mixes speed, endurance and desire with power and accuracy. Even when the big 3 retire i can't see him keeping up with the likes of zverev

Sadly, you are spot on. Very nice kid with a very good defensive game. Unlike some of the other young breed out there, the man has no significant weapons to speak of. Without weapons, he cannot shorten or get cheap points. His career could be a relatively short one. Hopefully, when his body fills out a bit, he can develop some stronger weapons.

Sadly if you took Alex’s Desire to win and survive every point, and gave it to Nick, or Nick’s Skillset to Alex you woulr have a World number one and multiple grand slams.

But sadly Alex just doesn’t have it, it’s fantastic to watch his never say die attitude, but unfortunately there just isn’t any elite skills there, his serve is Average at best, and his stroke power leaves a lot to be desired.

Hopefully as he fills out and gets stronger he can add power to his serve, and to his shots, if not he will be that bloke that wins the small town tournaments and the occasional round of 16 at the Majors.

But. she. had. A. BABY!

And lost to a Japanese girl and had a giant hissy fit and ruined her moment but that's racist and sexist.

How much are they trying to force Erin molan on it too? I liked her as a footy reporter, but hosting footy shows and now the tennis is just too much.

Can’t believe they wouldn’t go after one of the fox sports girls to headline their sports broadcast, they are so naturally talented, and don’t need to try and know sport, they just do.

I think Jess Yates would be the one they should head hunt.

A week is just about done and the tennis has been great.

Mens: Novak is the favourite for mine. He has the best defence in the draw and the attack is getting towards his best...although I'd say he is not quite there yet. Federer will be the main threat to Novak. Im not sold on Rafa yet. I feel a power hitter will take him down here. The young brigage....wait another year at least before you get a major,...haha. Medvedev is putting things together nicely but it is not his time just yet.
