Te'o Takes Control Of His Future

He has a simple decision to make.

Either he stays with us on a decent and fair wage where he has a real opportunity to excl with the combinations we have and the style we play and have a good chance at being a NZ rep for many seasons to come. He can train close to his studies and continue advancing his name through community initiatives of the club under a coach who has actively nurtured him and brought him along in leaps and bounds.

Alternatively he can chase an extra 30 - 50k per season and head to the Panthers or Saints. Elliott would destroy his flair and stilt his progress as a player and whilst Bennett may be an excellent coach his coaching methods are not known to be hugely beneficial for islander forwards.

Ball is in his court and I would love to see him stay but would not want to pay drastic overs. Would rather see him on an incentive based back loaded deal

So people like Civoniceva and Carroll wouldn't excel under Bennett.

tidy work

you're clutching at straws now.

Not really. I still believe that players like Pritchard, Moi Moi etc would go backwards under Bennetts coaching. It is my belief based on the style and internal camp demeanour over the many years watching him.

You disagree fair enough but I have reasons for believing this

comparing teo and heighno is stupid. they are totally different players. you wont win a comp with a team of teos or a team of heighnos, you need a balance.

i dont see how you can call teo lazy. he isnt there to make big meters or tackles. he is there to run wide and cause havoc on the fringes, something he has been doing very well. i know you love your stats MU, but they arent everything. tallis used to have similar stats to teo, would you have had him in your team?

the kid has a massive future, anyone saying he wont be a loss is kidding themselves

11. Teo 21yo($60K?) (26games/8 tries?)
- stats for saturday night: 1 try, 22 tackles, 108 metres in attack (wide running)

12. Heighington 26yo($280K?) (98games/21 tries?)
- stats for saturday night: 1 try, 27 tackles, 128 metres in attack (middle third)

Stats are good, but don`t paint the whole picture. Chris Heighington has developed into a very good footballer and i`m certainly glad we retained him, but he don`t hit near as hard as what Ben Te`o does when defending and isn`t nearly as much of a handfull to contain as what Ben Te`o is when running the football.
As others have stated, you need a balance, 3 Chris Heighington`s in the back row would probably mean that our attacking options were limited and 3 Ben Te`os in the back row would probably mean we`d be lacking workrate for a full 80 minutes !

The stats are just there for those who have no clue and want to compare these two players, and refuse to put them up when asked. ;-)

Wok has an idea.

IF we retain Te`o, it will be interesting to see where Liam Fulton will fit into the picture next season. I`ve been a massive Fulton fan since the lower grades, but IF Te`o stays our starting back row would have to be Ellis, Te`o and Heighington. I`m not sure how happy Liam would be as a regular interchange player and to be honest, it doesn`t really suit him as ideally you should have a strong ball runner such as Bronson Harrison (or even possibly Willie Mataka) as one interchange player, a hard hitter such as Danny Galea as another interchange player, a utilty such as Dene Halatau (or possibly Wayde Dunley) and a genuine prop who will most likely be whoever doesn`t start out of Payten, Galloway and Gibbs.
An option could be to start Fulton at 5/8 and Benji at fullback, but I think that would be a negative in attack compared with bringing in a brilliant attacking player such as Tim Moltzen ???
I may be way off the mark, but it`s interesting times ahead, taht`s for sure !

well if we assume his role is to play wide of the ruck, why then is he still doing less work than the centres?

What excuse do you have for him not getting involved in defence as much as all the other forwards and benchies?

The stats merely paint a picture that Te'o injects himself when he feels like it. He's only a damaging runner because he's not doing any bloody work to make him tired.

And because he plays that way, all the other players have to do his defence and the hard yards every set for him.

He's a passenger, piss him off.

I have heard he's testing the market but will agree to terms with the tigers within the week.

PNG players have a very different mindset and Carroll is not a Maori by any means.

It is my opinion and I stand by it

civonaceva is of fijian heritage. Carroll has maori heritage also - though maori's are not 'islanders'.

I agreee though would not be a good fit for Bennett.

In this issue of RLW there is an article titled Ben's managing just fine on his own. It's on page 6 under The Mole.

It basically says that he will put loyalty before loot and sign a two year extension with the Tigers this week despite fielding bigger offers from the Dragons, Panthers & Rabbitohs.

Excellant news. Cant wait for the official announcement.
