Thaiday joins Knights exodus
Glenn Jackson | August 13, 2007
MILTON Thaiday has become the latest statistic in the clean-out of Newcastle's playing ranks, only this time the player has decided to retire from professional sport altogether.
The livewire fullback's decision to pull the pin on his career has less to do with coach Brian Smith and more with an employment opportunity. He has quit to work with a program for indigenous children run by the Knights' major sponsor, Coal & Allied, and may still play park football.
It means he has played his last game in the NRL, after he was sidelined earlier for the rest of 2007 with a shoulder injury.
Thaiday could not take the job, which he has already undertaken part-time, if he continued playing professional football.
But the 27-year-old is also keen to escape the public spotlight. His battle with alcohol has been fought in the public eye, both during his time in rugby union with the NSW Waratahs and during his three seasons with the Knights.
"He's just tired of the continual speculation about him on and off the field," his manager, Mike Newton, said. "This is just a career opportunity."
Thaiday had been linked with Gold Coast and South Sydney and had attracted interest from European rugby union clubs.
"If he wanted to continue playing, he certainly could have done it," Newton said. "He's not walking away because he doesn't have a gig."
Already Clint Newton and Luke Quigley (Catalans) have left the Knights under Smith, while Josh Perry (Manly), Adam Woolnough, Brad Tighe (both Penrith) and Kade Snowden (Cronulla) will join other clubs next season.
Daniel Abraham is also on the outer, while Kirk Reynoldson has been the catalyst for player unrest after being dropped two games short of a contract trigger that would have given him another season with the club.
