Thaiday joins Knights exodus
Glenn Jackson | August 13, 2007

MILTON Thaiday has become the latest statistic in the clean-out of Newcastle's playing ranks, only this time the player has decided to retire from professional sport altogether.
The livewire fullback's decision to pull the pin on his career has less to do with coach Brian Smith and more with an employment opportunity. He has quit to work with a program for indigenous children run by the Knights' major sponsor, Coal & Allied, and may still play park football.
It means he has played his last game in the NRL, after he was sidelined earlier for the rest of 2007 with a shoulder injury.
Thaiday could not take the job, which he has already undertaken part-time, if he continued playing professional football.
But the 27-year-old is also keen to escape the public spotlight. His battle with alcohol has been fought in the public eye, both during his time in rugby union with the NSW Waratahs and during his three seasons with the Knights.
"He's just tired of the continual speculation about him on and off the field," his manager, Mike Newton, said. "This is just a career opportunity."
Thaiday had been linked with Gold Coast and South Sydney and had attracted interest from European rugby union clubs.
"If he wanted to continue playing, he certainly could have done it," Newton said. "He's not walking away because he doesn't have a gig."
Already Clint Newton and Luke Quigley (Catalans) have left the Knights under Smith, while Josh Perry (Manly), Adam Woolnough, Brad Tighe (both Penrith) and Kade Snowden (Cronulla) will join other clubs next season.
Daniel Abraham is also on the outer, while Kirk Reynoldson has been the catalyst for player unrest after being dropped two games short of a contract trigger that would have given him another season with the club.

I personally prefer the more Anti-Smith version:

Fed-up Knight calls it a day

THE exodus continues at Newcastle, with fullback Milton Thaiday choosing retirement in preference to another season under coach Brian Smith.

Thaiday's shock decision to quit the NRL follows a week of turmoil in Newcastle that has rocked the Hunter region.

The troubled week was highlighted by comments from Knights skipper Danny Buderus that morale had reached an all-time low under Smith.

Thaiday's decision to walk out on the game adds merit to Buderus's claims.

It's believed Thaiday told Knights officials this week that he'd had enough – and instead will take up a position with their major sponsor Coal and Allied.

Battling injury for the majority of 2007, Thaiday was off-contract with Newcastle and failed to display his explosive talent this season.

The Knights were keen to renew his contract and it's also understood the Cowboys and Souths were interested in securing the 26-year-old.

However, it's believed Thaiday's passion for the game had waned over the past year.

His decision continues the mass-exodus of players that threatens to destabilise the proud foundation the club has been built on.

The former Super 12 fullback for the NSW Waratahs joins a worrying list of departures from the Knights that includes Andrew Johns, Clint Newton, Josh Perry, Adam Woolnough, Kade Snowden and Brad Tighe.

Football manager Steve Crowe also resigned this week, having spent nearly two decades at the club.

The Knights have proven reserved in their recruitment for next season with Matt Hilder, Chris Houston, Danny Wicks, Wes Naiqama and Ben Cross their noted signings.

Meanwhile, Knights legend Andrew Johns says he has been shocked to learn of the turmoil engulfing his former club, but has ruled himself out as a potential replacement coach for the embattled Smith.

Johns, currently on holiday overseas, said he had been in contact with several of his former teammates, but remained hopeful Newcastle could pull out of its self-destructive nosedive.

But he categorically ruled himself out of becoming Knights coach.

"As for suggestions of me coaching, you can forget it," Johns said. "There is more chance of me making a playing comeback than there is of me coaching.

"Maybe in hindsight, we should have seen the trouble coming. Hopefully, Brian Smith and Bedsy can get together quickly and find a way to get past what has already gone down and management can play a role here too. There needs to be some give and take on all sides."

I love that anti-Knights version. "Reserved" in their recruitment, and it names 5 players as merely the "noted" signings

Note the key "dramatic" words:

You don't read many articles on how players like Perry, Newton, Reynoldson etc were all on inflated contracts. Or how regular first-graders like Abraham, Carmont and Tanner are struggling to gain any worthwhile interest from other clubs.

The truth of the matter is that once Johns retired, certain players were unable to ride his coat tails any longer. Under the old regime the club may have felt obliged to offer them a new contract, but that is no longer the case. I'll reserve judgement on how much Smith has "destroyed our club" for another 8 or so months- after he has actually had the time to field the players that he wants and not those he inherited from the former coach.

and i'll add that the year has been better than most expected, and up until our current losing streak smith even had us convinced that we could make the finals this year.

nothing short of amazing considering the knights record without johns (and buderus for that matter) prior to this year. so yeah, we're not doing as bad as the news ltd spin machine would allow you to think.

he has picked up a good job with the KNIGHTS sponsor....i'd say he would be pretty grateful to the club.

without them taking a chance on him he would have been running around in the North Coast comp for Grafton Ghosts or whoever he was with after RU had turned their back on him. instead he got a chance to play NRL and is now going to work for a huge company on what i would imagine being pretty good $$$.

The little guy didn't lack courage.
His last action playing fullback in PL was to line up a huge prop has had made a bust and was at full tilt and put a shoulder charge on him SBW would have been proud of - put the prop on his arse, but popped Miltons shoulder and ended his career.
