So it was OK to rally the states to commit to Gonski, offer them gabillions in education funding and then cut it 7/8 months later ? Done so simultaneously with health cuts, all designed to increase the GST by stealth ?

You don't think that he's a lying merkin ? Surely you will admit that he, like his peers on both sides of politics, cannot be trusted ?

I absolutely see your point, mate, and it is a fair one.

However, we both know that this is simply a game of politics. Not between parties this time, as is usual, but state v. federal. If you don't think that the GST needs to be both raised and broadened then you're kidding yourself. Abbott has just decided to play the game this way.

Whether it plays out as he hopes, though, is something we'll all have to kick back and wait to see...

......and the hostage is the welfare of the Australian people. If this comes off....fine....but it is an ill-considered strategy when combined with the rest of the withdrawal of $$$ from the system in one hit. I'll say it once more....we'll need just one piece of random bad luck (e.g. China turning the taps off for 18 months) to turn this into a cluster f**k. There's no doubt that some belt-tightening is necessary...but much of the current budget is more about massaging the ideological sensitivities of some blokes who have been attending Young Libs dinners for their entire life. We need small 'l' libs not dickheads.

Come on lefties, the country didn't fall apart under Labor's responsible management. Is it really going to go to shit under that vicious right wing extremist currently looking after his rich mates?

Probably hey?

Baz, if we don't tighten our belts then when the next crisis hits we'll have that $667bn debt and we'll be f**ked.

How stupid are people? Everyone f**king going on about how we're not as bad off as others blah blah blah:

1) That's like saying it's OK that I've only got one leg cut off because that guy over there has both his gone;
2) The way we will avoid becoming as f**ked as everyone else is by tightening our belts before we get there.

Seriously, all I see right now is a bunch of ignorant f**kwits babbling on when they don't have a f**king clue what they're talking about. Our expenditure is about ready to explode yet everyone is f**king ignorant of what is staring them right in the face.

The one good result from this, though, is that I get yet another example of how much more f**king intelligent I am than 99.9% of the population of this country, some posters here included.

If you were as smart as you say you are then you would have realised that Barry actually said that "there is no doubt that some belt tightening is necessary". The argument wasn't about whether we should or shouldn't tighten, it was about what notch on the belt.

Yeh, great post HJ. Try reading what I wrote. And I'll back my economics education and experience against 99% of the population if you want to discuss 'ignornance'.

I repeat....we do need to constrain spending....that's a no brainer. And, we need to tax more efficiently and effectively (i.e. even if the take is not that much greater....we want taxes that cause as little distortion to economic behaviour as possible)

You can't take any pleasure in massoud and Wilson feasting on the carcass of someone else's marriage breakdown though.

And you can understand someone being upset that their wife is with someone else.

Hadley and all the shock jocks have been using their positions for their own agendas forever. They are all foul but the real shame is the power people let them have. The aren't even basically smart let alone trustworthy or fair in their use of that power.

I can't say there's anything for me to like about parish. Certainly not based on his achievements for us.

No winners out of this story.

If we have to tighten our belts as much as you say HJ why is the government giving over 5 billion a year for the wealthy to have kids??? Absolutely laughable.

So the poor, lower and middle class have been excluded from the PPS? That's outrageous. :sarcasm:
Did I mention the poor and lower middle class??? Pretty sure the whole scheme is worth more then 5 billion a year but is just how much the top tax earners will be getting which is laughable. While pensioners and lower income earners are hit. Not to mention anyone under 30 who has the hide to lose their job which is happening all the more after the mad monk had gotten in. And let's not forget the 284 million for school chaplains to peddle their rhetoric.
