We won't. But overcrowding will lead to new forms of social organisation that will turn us into monsters. We will 'lose our humanity', for want of a better term.

For a bloke with heaps of money, you should know that trillions spent in an area like this isn't transferable to the same amount spent in other areas.

Besides, there will be scientific benefits from apparently whimsical shit like this. If we can't get off the planet the race is eventually doomed.

You are right. I forgot about the non stick frying pan and space food sticks.

It's interesting that people often compare the large numbers thrown around for wealth with the real poverty faced by others, as if they were so easily transferable. As if you could take a billion dollars from Gina Rinehart and convert it to a hundred dollars each for ten million people.

But most of the enormous wealth of these people is made of goods, services and assets with hugely inflated values. A ten million dollar property isn't made up of resources that could be spread among twenty properties worth $500k each. An $800k car isn't made from the same amount of resources as forty cars worth only $20k. And a $200k a year corporate lawyer is useless to any number of poor people.

It's all about demand and supply and what the market is willing to pay. So who decides that we need to spend trillions on living on a uninhabitable planet? Is it all just ego and curiosity?

The people who are willing to spend that much are the ones that decide how much it costs. Of course it's ego. But if they didn't have so much disposable income they wouldn't be able to spend it.

People wasting their money on shit is a sign of a strong economy. It keeps other idiots employed who can then spend their money on useless shit. It's the circle of life.

Spot on Pou. So we really haven't progressed much since the Roman times when you think of it. Slavery is now masked as child labour in Pakistan making a soccer ball for some kid in Australia.

You could look at it that way, except that slaves weren't given a choice of which master they could serve.

And even poor people are better off working than not working. Since school is more about childcare than it is about education, child labour does the same thing.

I have worked with a few third world blokes who never went to school - instead they were having to earn money from the time they could walk. They got a pretty useful education out of that experience, and some were very smart blokes. Like anywhere the cream rises to the top.

A Western style 12 year education is useless to most people, including most people in the West.

Correction, it's the circle of shit.

It's not our job to tell our lessers what they should be doing with their time or spending their money on, Casper. When people are allowed to be free you get a free market. You can't have one without the other.

How much will it cost to get the shit over there to build with that you beaut gravity?

A worthwhile investment. Don't forget, sooner or later we'll run out of shit to mine here on Earth.

Do we start mining and forestry there also. It's bullshit.

Mining, yes. Forestry, eventually as a domestic industry.

Just make what you already have better. Still plenty of space.

We're already overpopulated and we've already proven that we won't change to "make what we already have better". Best bet is tabula rasa in an environment that forces efficiency.

Captured asteroids?

Yes. They're already thinking about it.

Want me to go even crazier? Capture one of those asteroids, bring it into Earth orbit and start mining it. Turn it into a cable that you drop down to Earth and then turn that cable into an elevator. Build a platform on the space end and you have a cheap method of getting out of Earth's gravity well.

Then other asteroids can be brought close, mined and brought down to Earth on the cheap.

As Poo said, if we don't do it then sooner or later we're f**ked here.
