I'll be home by then. Anyway it's unlikely as the first 10 hours was culling 10 players down to 3. The final 3 could be done and dusted in under an hour. Y gen are very aggressive and are happy to put everything on the line with a bluff.

I wouldn't be shy to be aggressive if I was getting 3million as worst case scenario.

Agree, however they have got to the final table after playing aggressive for 7 days. Always putting their stack at risk, including the $10,000 entry fee.

So once they cash in they're not risking anything no matter how big their stacks get.

I don't think you get it merkin. Think of it as a golf tournament, only you have to pay $10k to play. If you finish top 20, then you get prize money.

To finish top 20 in golf, you need to survive the cut each round and play well for 4 days. Same principle here.

You can't "cash in" cos it's not real money. They are playing with casino chips that have no transferrable value.

The WSOP has 6,000+ starters who all pay $10,000* to play. That's a prize pool of $60m and it dispersed to the last few hundred as they bust from day 4 or 5 onwards. So very few "cash" meaning that they get prize money.

* Some elite players only start on day 2 or 3 and pay $100k or even $250k for late entry.

EDIT: Prize Money is here. You get cash if you finish better than top 693rd.

I get it.

You risk your initial buy in. That's it. After that the stakes aren't any higher in real terms because you don't have the option of cashing in. You pay your $10k (or more for late entries) and then you either leave empty handed or with your prize money. The stakes never get any higher than $10k (more for the elites) because your winnings are never real until the very end of the game.

If they were able to cash out at any time then it might be worth bragging about aggressive tactics but because they can't there isn't any good reason to be cautious. When there's no temptation to quit while you're ahead the heightened stakes are artificial.

Yes but if you last until the last 600 odd, then the prize money increases the longer you last. Accordingly that's when the stakes become real (beyond your $10k entry fee) as the lowest cash prize is circa $18k. You last until the top 200 and your looking at $40k, top 100 and you get $60k, top 50 $186k etc.

Russian ships unlikely a response to Abbott.

================

LOL it must be good to have Uncle Rupert in your corner.

I might not know much, but I know one thing: Howard, Keating et all would never have used the shirtfront comment on the international stage. It was stupid macho posturing for the electorate.

Now he's come across and a insignificant barking yap yap dog, nipping at the heals of a KGB trained Doberman, who has killed many times before.

Backfired much ?

Apparently they are heading to Sth China seas for exercises but media have turned it into "Russian Ships Steaming Towards Australia".

Agreed it was a stupid comment, made doubly stupid by the fact he obviously didn't know what 'shirtfront' meant.

But militarily, Australia and the US are the same thing. That's why Australian politicians can talk tough on the world stage. But talking tough should still be done with some professionalism. What are we, f**king Venezuela?

Latest position is that they rounded Bougainville Island (PNG) and now in Coral Sea.

Yep, apart from the sensationalism, they then point out that Russia have done this numerous times before for similar events such as the G20.

It was funny to see the uneducated bogans on Facebook (who are just dirty with Abbot cause they are going to lose welfare they don't deserve anyways) last night freaking out and blaming Abbot for getting us killed.

It was a fairly simple google for me last night to get the real story, not the bogan story that I saw from a fair few different individuals.

He originally said front shirting didn't he ?

Then changed it to shirt fronting so yeh, he never had a clue what it meant.

He doesn't strike me as the athletic type.

I think there more to it than your bogan alarmist angle. It IS unprecedented for the Ruskis to come all the way down here. The question that only the Russians can answer is would they have come if Abbott had left his shirt on ?

An international security expert says the presence of Russian ships in international waters so close to Australia is a show of force and could be linked to intelligence gathering operations ahead of the G20 Summit in Brisbane this weekend.
Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) executive director Peter Jennings says Russia?s actions, while not unprecedented in terms of military behaviour, are unusual because ?we haven?t seen activity like this around Australia before?.
Four Russian military vessels, including a guided missile cruiser, are currently navigating international waters toward northern Australia.
Australian Defence Force (ADF) chief Mark Binskin said Australia was monitoring the convoy but emphasised the deployment of the Russian ships was ?entirely consistent with provisions under international law for military vessels?.
Jennings says Russia has been employing an increasingly aggressive use of military assets and aircraft to assert power in recent months.
?It is unusual they would come this far south, there?s no doubt about that,? he told Business Insider.
?In Europe as of late, we?ve witnessed Russian military displaying extremely aggressive behaviour in terms of aircraft exercises.
?Interestingly, this is probably the furthest afield where they have done this kind of thing.?
Jennings says there are two main reasons why Russian vessels would be approaching Australia.

  1. As a show of force ? which is very much the Russian approach.
  2. Intelligence gathering operations ? They?ll do their best to sit off the coast in international waters and pick up any signals or data coming out of the G20.
He dismissed links tying these actions to the recent political tensions between Australia and Russia and the two-and-fro between Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will both be attending the G20 Summit in Brisbane.
?Its Russia?s way of saying they are not a country to be treated lightly,? he said.
?The Japanese are very used to this. There is very regular cold war style behaviour around disputed areas in north Asia.
?It is all part of a cold war strategy that Russia has been carrying out for the past 50-60 years.?
Professor Peter Leahy, director of the National Security Institute at the University of Canberra, told Business Insider that Russia?s latest activity in the Pacific wasn?t anything out of the ordinary.
?This is just Russia displaying its military power and exercising its global reach,? he said.
?It?s likely to be pre-planned and related to the G20 meeting in Brisbane, rather than any comments made by the Prime Minister.
?I agree with some commentators views that Russia is angry. They?ve been facing continued pressure from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) around their northern borders with Europe and this is their way of saying, we?re still here and we?re a global power with interests everywhere, including the Pacific.?
