The hostage taker's identity has now been disclosed by several news outlets. Seems like he has a (criminal) history, claims previous charges were a conspiracy against him, and has his own "unique" view of what being a Muslim means. Has been on a recent letter writing campaign (including to the PM) about foreign policies, which goes some way to explaining his demand for an interview/debate?

His website is now suspended, but carried an entry from Sunday where it seems he's decided to announce to the world he's changed from a Shia Muslim to a Sunni(?) Muslim, and is suddenly carrying out an act to gain attention and/or prove his merits to the extremist Sunni IS/ISIL group....

Sounds like a certifiable nutcase, but he's known to police so hopefully that means they have more a chance of talking him out of it?

Lone crazy fruit loop !! Not a good outcome but with population of over 20 million there is always bound to be incidents like this in Australia. If this happened a year or so ago there would have been no link to Isis and it would just be put down to a mentally unstable person.

The media and politicians are all playing on the terrorism/ Isis links.

Yes . very hard on the families and friends involved - hope Emjaycee's friend wasn't one of the unlucky ones.

To me it's not an issue that this guy had been "let in" back in 1997 or whatever. The issue is that anyone here accused of serious crimes (attempted murder, a string of sexual assaults) can be allowed by our court system to be out on bail.... Our system needs to be able to deal with the serious charges much more quickly, so that people can be deemed guilty or innocent within a reasonable timeframe, and so that seeking/giving bail isn't as big a part of proceedings as it is now.

Also...mental health. As always, needs increased levels of funding so appropriate support/treatment can be given to people who clearly need it.
