If the exceptions were reasonable nobody would want to repeal 18C.

Andrew Bolt got caught under 18C cos he published an article about an indigenous person who he felt was not black enough (or something like that). He argued that the article was in the public interest - and lost that test.

Who else has been dudded under 18C other than the Murdoch wanker Pou ?

You'll be hard pressed finding any cases. Wonder why Abbott was so quick to follow this up as soon as he was sworn in ? I smell a rat (or fox).

You're making shit up again ...

S18c makes it unlawful for someone to do an act that is reasonably likely to "offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate" someone because of their race or ethnicity.

S18d however contains exemptions which protect freedom of speech. These ensure that artistic works, scientific debate and fair comment on matters of public interest are exempt from 18C, providing that they are said or done reasonably and in good faith.

As I said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

So far the majority of people who want it changed are middle aged white dudes. Go figure.

I love a good "reasonably likely" style law. Lol

The Yanks are going ape shit about the whole ISIS thing and how they are the greatest threat to the US, yet they allow the public to bear arms which kills 10,000 people per year.

Imagine if terrorists killed 10,000 yanks on home soil per year. They would go ballistic.

Alcohol kills almost ninety thousand Americans each year. Why aren't the anti-gun lobby complaining about that?

Sorry to spoil the off footy topics, starting at 12pm on Fox Sports 1 (Channel 501 next Sunday , they are running Parramatta games on the NRL club day format. Taking a quick look at them , they are games we won, so set your IQ and get in trouble with the missus :) - words like "it's not even the season " will be heard !!

f**k off, Delboy. Who cares about your f**kin' Parramatta games?

Bolt lost largely because he got his facts wrong (and omitted crucial facts)....he would have been protected by Section 18D of the act which allows 'fair comment'. His articles suggested that the group of 'white aboriginals' had chosen to be so for personal gain. All nine were raised 'black' (so to say), and did not have any choice in the matter. Bolt omitted this from his articles and made other factual errors regarding the genealogy of the complainants (i.e. omitting to note that each did have indigenous ancestry), each of which were used to support his argument that the 'white aboriginals' had opportunistically rorted the system.

For those bored enough the full judgement is here (it's got a summary at the top):

Coz that would make them the anti-alcohol lobby

Well they seem happy to branch out to the terrorists-hardly-kill-anyone lobby. How come you never hear these gun control nuts railing against other dangerous things like alcohol? If they care so much about saving lives why focus on a piddling thing like guns?

Dunno, maybe because most people don't really need one, and people are pretty good at accidentally killing themselves and/or their family with them I guess.

It's a complex issue. Canada's gun laws are not that different to those in the US, but they have a much lower rate of gun deaths. I'm now going to misuse a word to annoy Lingard. It's a confluence of many factors in the US, but a high rate of gun ownership is, at the very least, a facilitating factor in their astronomical rate of violent deaths (for a developed country with a stable political system).

they are too far gone to try and implement any kind of gun control now. Arms dealers and runners in America would become some of the richest people in the world.

They bear arms because it makes them feel safe. Especially in rural areas where your neighbours aren't close by and you'd be lucky if there was a cop within 10km.
