Rarely? How often does no 7 seed upset no 2? It's happen 4 times thus far, with team 3 getting a week off 3 of those times.

Plus, to date, the McIntyre system hasn't produced an unfair outcome.

If Brisabne & SGI win, and Manly upset Parramatta, the Tigers will have to play Parramatta (1), and the Cowboys get Manly (8). Dunno if that's unfair or not, but slightly odd.

If the next few games go to form except, say, Manly gets up over a depleted Parramatta tomorow, the Tigers reward will be a matchup with the minor premiers and North Queensland, after being thumped by the Tigers, will play Manly.

You could say that's fair because obviously manly will have shown themselves to be the better team, but seriously, who judges form on the result of one week? Except for this McIntyre bloke, of course. What if some appalling ref error costs Parra the game, a bad send off that results in no suspension, for instance?

this system is dreadful, and soon enough it will be shown up as being dreadful. If I wasn't a Tigers fan I'd hope for the above scenario to occur, because in light of the belting that NQ received last night it would show once and for all how patently absurd the current system is.

It's all good and well to say that it always produces exciting results, and so if it's not broke don't fix it, but just because the wheels haven't fallen off yet does not mean they won't. The exciting results we've seen of late have been a result of a high standard, and very even, competition.

Top 6 system, or a top 8 system that keeps the format of the old top 5 (it's possible, it was posted in another thread. You need an extra week, though...), are the way to go in my opinion.

I actually quite like the AFL system. I just feel that you are more chance of getting closer games in week 1. Also this way you are guaranteed a home preliminary final to get into the grand final. This way there is more motivation to get into the top 2!

Accept no substitute to this, my fair and flawless system.

---------------

By simply adding 1 week and reverting to week 2 of the old top 5 by week 3, all flaws get eliminated and all top 4 sides gain 2 bites regardless of any results. All bottom 4 play constant elimination as they should. It's fair and all matches mean something. With the Gold Coast being admitted the season can reduce to 22 weeks to accomodate this.

In this example assume the highest ranked team wins but remember no matter who wins the top 4 all get 2 bites and the bottom 4 always play sudden death.

E = elimination

WEEK 1 (HOME team 1st)

1 v 4
2 v 3

(winners above advance to GF qualifier week 3, losers get home advantage in week 2 v bottom 4 winners which is more reward for their top 4 finish)

5 v 8 E
6 v 7 E

WEEK 2 (HOME team 1st)

3 v 6 E
4 v 5 E

WEEK 3 (all games from now on neutral venues and the system now flows EXACTLY as it did from week 2 of the old top 5 from here on)

1 v 2 (winner advances to the Grand Final, loser gets their 2nd bite nxt wk)

3 v 4 E

WEEK 4

2 v 3 E

WEEK 5

1 v 2 (Grand Final)

This series is only 1 game extra over what we have now and eliminates all flaws. 1 of the top 4 sides will only play 3 games in 5 weeks BUT this is no different to 1 side only playing 2 games in 4 weeks in the old top 5 system. History has shown the very good sides overcame this and arguments raged whether it was better to have the week off or to play throughout.

Maybe a home final for the higher ranked team in Winner3 vs Loser1 with the Winner4 vs Loser2 game being played at Aussie Stadium regardless?

Theres not much you can do about that. Cowboys finished higher than the Sharks so in any system they would proceed.

Umm, the Cowboys would not of proceeded with a loss in the "AFL" system.

The Mcintyre system is crap, the 6th placed Storm are rewarded with a game against the 5th placed Cowboys. The 4th placed Tigers are rewarded with a game against the 3rd placed Broncos.

The games would not be the same. 1st-4th get a double chance, 5th-8th if they lose, get eliminated.

1v4
2v3

Winners go to week three (bye), losers get double chance.

5v8
6v7

Winners go to week two, losers eliminated.

Oh right I see what you mean. Would work a lot better as the top 4 are granteed a second chance.

.

The Cowboys would've played Manly in the AFL system. COMPLETELY different story.

Parra and St.George/Illawarra would've been favourites in the AFL system to beat the Broncos and Tigers respectively, likewise the Storm and Cowboys against the Sharks and Eagles. Hence exactly the same thing would likely have happened.

I just think it's ridiculous that a higher team defeats a lower placed team, yet has no reward whatsoever for doing so (and are arguably worse off, eg, as some people have already said). It's beyond ridiculous, actually, it's a joke.

Exactly the way i feel. Broncos and Tigers considering where they finished, should be playing against Storm and Cows. Instead, there is a guarantee a top 4 side will be eliminated and a bottom 4 side will make the gf qualifier.

Even so, there is still one pointless game (pointless in that there is no reward for winning, in this case 4 v 5), and that is one pointless game too many.

Hasn't produced an unfair outcome?? The Tigers get no reward for beating the Cowboys - that's not unfair, you're right. It's ridiculous.

In the AFL system, the Tigers may well have lost to the Eels, and therefore ended up being in the same position they're in now anyway, but at least you could always look back and say they had the opportunity to progress. Their fate would have solely rested on the reults of their match vs Parra. In the McIntyre system, the Tigers v Cowboys match did not matter. And having a finals match where the result doesn't matter, that is unforgivable.
