The big NRL divide

When the tables have turned again you won’t have any of these clubs giving the slightest shit about the cellar dwellers and their plight.

piss poor personnel decisions and cap management have caused this, not rule changes that apply to everyone.

guys on silly money at one club (mbye, Hess, Milford, DWZ, Norman, Taylor etc) would struggle to play first grade at other clubs and barely even put any effort in each week. Clubs need to put clear KPIs into all these contracts so they can rip them up when the player turns into a useless, lazy, disinterested cancer like the above mentioned.

The only teams it’s never really effected are the roosters and Melbourne who both have pretty ruthless ideas when it comes to tying up big money on players.

9/10 they are spot on when they refuse to pay big bucks for the next sensation.

A fair few people missing the point here IMO.

The issue isn't that there are bad teams, that has always been the case. Swings and roundabouts and all that.

The issue is that the current rules result in more floggings and drastically reduce the chances of an upset.

The business of sport is about selling hope and after 4 rounds of a 25 round competition we have 25% of the teams getting flogged every week with no realistic chance of getting anywhere near the finals. That will lead to poor crowds, lower TV ratings and overall less revenue for the game. It just isn't good business and I can't imagine the NRL won't address this fairly soon.

Compare all that to the big bad AFL who had this exact same issue. They modified their rules and the result has been a lot of close games, the odd shock result, only the one team that is uncompetitive and business is booming.

Sharks v Raiders was close but an abysmal quality game imo. So it was kinda like wishing on a cursed monkey paw for a close game but it makes it really crappy
It was played under atrocious weather conditions it was an ok game.

We are 4 weeks in

The teams you mentioned all have new coaches.

Shorter pre-season

Only had one trial

No 2nd tier footy. So if a coach wants to axe senior guys the options are under done themselves

It will even up over the next month or so

Cream always rises to the top, the bottom 5 teams will see what the creams doing and in another season or two will follow suit, its alays been the case, the rules aren't the issue, its the fatigue that is!
and if you have a great forward pack and relentless rotation of them, then you'll win, if you're forwards are lethargic or cant match the cream forwards, your done season over...
You can have best halfback in the world, but if your behind a shit pack, it doesn't mean shít

Funny that all the top sides right now are the ones that are the leaders off the field in terms of professionalism, business aptitude, etc. Astounding, really.

And also the teams who always seem to have someone on the rules committee.

Dragons v Cows and Dragons v Sharks was good.

Seems the even matched teams have good games. That shows rules are fine just need to get the bad teams better

this
there will be competition between varying levels of the comp
among the top 5 or 6 games between these sides will be very good, Storm V Souths .. Panthers V Storm were effing crackers .. this will continue
Any games between the next 5 or 6 will be ok too , they're matched & sides from this group will occasionally compete with the mob above them
the bottom 4 will be competitive with the others in their group & occasionally with the 5 or 6 above them .. but will get lapped by the top 4 or 5

Penrith proves hard work and good management is enough. We sucked for the last 20 years and most of our history because of incompetence

I think long term the average NRL player will look a bit different as a result of this new look game we are seeing , be smaller & lighter. They've been trying to get smaller skillful players back into the game & take the size out of it & tried to manipulate this through the interchange & it worked to a degree. But this is new level change & it came without warning. Half the comp is in catch up mode & it'll take a few years for them to get caught up

If your team is shit, you need to hire the correct coach/staff to fix the problem, and allow them a couple of years of being shit while they fix the roster.
If you pick the wrong coach, you are f**ked. If you sack the right coach after 1-2 years, you are f**ked. if you put short term KPIs on the coach, they will go for a quick fix and you are f**ked.

yeah , lets not develop players then because there is no incentive to

lol

wow
That's not what I'm saying. Just pointing out you can't undermine the salary cap with dispensations for some based on geographic advantage. Also it gets complicated, how young can the chooks buy the kids and then claim 'development'?

Brisbane and the GC Titans should be harrassing Cam & Barb Smith this easter. Offer him captain coach money.

f**k no, he needs to stay retired. Smith and Bellamy are both delusional, they become absolute goats through ruthlessness and then have a cry when they realise they are not universally adored.
