The Contender Australia

I gotta confess that when I first heard about The Contender: Australia I almost sh*t a brick.

I knocked it straight away to be truthful.

Out of protest I didn't watch the first episode.

I mean, earlier in the year The Contender 3 was released on Fox 8 right?
This one was based in either Malaysia or Singapore yer?
I watched 2 episodes of it then stopped watching it.
It was uninteresting and that clown from "Who's the Boss" replaced Sugar Ray.
Plus they were only fighting for 500 thousand.
It was uninteresting and had unknown fighters you didn't care about.
I just lost interest and didn't care. It was cheap with no meaning.

Even though I stopped watching it I'd still flick through the channels of a Monday night to see if it was still on.
I believe Fox 8 canned it? It got the ass!
It wasn't listed anymore in the 9:30pm timeslot.

I don't know why but for some reason I plopped down and watched The Contender: Australia, Episode 2 and found myself warming to it.
It's actually quality viewing.
As menial as they are the "challenges" are back, and refreshing to watch, but in saying that the whole yellow versus blue sh*t...........umm, Boxing is not a team sport alright?
There's no team work in boxing whatsoever!
So it's pointless really.

There are no prizes for guessing who'll win this Australian Contender when it's done and dusted.
You can quote me as saying this that the winner in the end will be PRADEEP SINGH.
Isn't he a cricketer though?

There are a lot of boxers there who shouldn't be.

Sonni. Ben. Josh. Garth. Adrian. Daniel. Nader. Luke. Kariz and Les.

I'll let you in on a little secret with this Contender stuff.
What you see on TV isn't how they normally handle them self in the ring.
A real boxer is conditioned to ten or 12 rounds so to come back to a 5 rounder it's not a true reflection of how they really fight.
Most boxers are showoffs and for this Contender series they want fast paced viewing so they're all looking to knock each other out with their best right hook in the early rounds.
They just want their star to shine knowing that they're on national TV.
Gives 'em more emphasis to try harder.
The're not boxing they're slugging. It's not boxing.
They burn too much energy in the first few rounds trying to look good on TV anyway.

It's classical Rocky Movie Syndrome stuff.
Every Rocky movie fight starts out the same. Bell rings, he'll jab, jab then the right hook bombs start.
That's not boxing.
All these Contender blokes are looking for the KO early.

Now a smart fighter would truly box, yet he'll bore you at the same time and Fox 8 don't want that, either does the crowd.
See, real boxing is boring.
I can see either Pradeep or Hamden winning this thing because they're natural boxers and not showoffs, ok?
I know, I know, I said Hamden doesn't deserve to be here but he knows all the tricks of the trade and he's a natural boxer.
A clever boxer would pick his punches, stick and move, scoring points along the way if he wanted to win this Contender thingy.
It's a very boring style to watch and Nader Hamden is the master of this style so I won't be surprised if he's there at the end.
Problem with Hamden though is he's tired and no power left.

It's all right there, Les Piper, the bald guy in episode 2 said it himself....he said it in a nutshell, "this 5 round crap is rubbish, put him in a real 12 round fight and I'll beat him."

Honestly I thought Piper did enough to win that fight against Hamden.
I had it a draw.

And last night’s decision to award Victor Oganov was atrocious.
Junior Talapou won the first 4 rounds.

Pradeep Signh was right when he stated that there's politics involved last night.

I assume from last night’s preview for next week that Sonni "Jungle Boy" Michael Angelo will be up next fighting.
Don't be fooled by this clowns muscle and intimidation. His record speaks for itself. For such a large imposing figure he's only got 3 knock downs next to his name and is rather lame.
He squandered his talent and is reckless.

I laughed my ass off last night When Sonni turned on Briggs and Briggs started to square up in return not backing down.
See him loosening up?
Can you imagine in the original series of The Contender one of the fighters turning on Stallone and Stallone started to loosen up as well?

And the commercial for next weeks episode has Briggs changing teams and joining the blue team so you know that Jungle Boy is fighting next week and Briggs turns corners.
If I remember correctly Briggs once had a go at Sonni on Friday night fights for the way he was conducting himself.
Was it the Bulli Blaster fight head clash stoppage? Briggs said he shouldn't be in the sport and to be banned from future telecasts.
Think Briggs also got mad commentating on the Mundine/Green card for the Keg guy saying they were ripped off.
The last I saw Briggs got knocked out by some old guy a while back.

YAWN!!!!

As for last night, complete rort, Jnr was all over him...same as with Piper 7 Hamden last week. I will still watch the show, but last night was BS.

Junior looked a very capable boxer. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here. Maybe he can make the leap from Australian champ to something bigger.

Watching the replay now on fox 8.

So far I don't think it's a complete rort that junior lost.

Last week however with Nader winning, that was disgraceful.

Do you still feel the same having watched the whole fight?

I thought Oganov was outboxed through out the 5 rounds. It was a great fight though- best of the series so far.

In the early rounds of these shows its really tough to pick who'll win. I remember the first US version everyone though Peter Manfredo would win the show easy. Then in the first week Menfredo was challenged and beaten. Then about 3 or 4 boxers pulled out of the show due to injury and most of the ellimated fighters came back, Manfredo being one of them. Then Manfedo went on the win the show. So after the first couple of weeks there'd be no way you'd think Manfredo would win. But.......

The Latin Snake did win that original Contender not Manfredo.

Think Mora suffered his first defeat earlier in '09 too.

Manfredo has no power in his punches and his nose looks flat and lumpy.

There are a lot of fools at this website giving misleading information.

Sparton Dragon should be smashed for implying that Jungle Boy wins Contender Australia.
That's a f*cked thing to say.
You should be banned from League Unlimited for implying that, Sparton.

Christ people are stupid.

I was only thinking about that original Contender last night and remembered how the cowboy from TX got beat and at the end broke down crying in front of Stallone and actually apologised.
There was no need to but he did.
He even got up and walked off without explanation leaving all gobsmacked.
I couldn't believe it.

They are using real judges who have nothing to do with the actual show. Boxing NSW has brought the judges in at random and they change them every fight. It isn't fixed but they do have a strange way of editing the fights which makes the whole thing look geniused.

Australian boxing has been a disgrace for many years. People around the world talk about the home town decisions and bias reffing that happens in Germany etc, but there no place worse for corruption or just sheer incompetence than Australia. I guess it's just lucky the majoirty of our boxers are rubbish and the the world don't see nor care about the sh*t that goes down here.

Feel sorry for Junior, hopefully he can go on to better things, he definitely has the ability.

Just watched it. tbh I had Victor winning 2 and 5, Junior winning 3 and 4, and 1 was too tough to call.

However, judging by the reactions of the crowd and especially the corners (Junior's corner telling him he was winning after every round, Victor's corner telling him he was losing) you'd think Junior won easy.

Not sure if it's a case of the crowd and corners being right and the editing being too favourable to Victor, or the editing being more accurate than the crowd, but I think it appeared a very close fight.

How anyone watching can make any sort of judgement of the result based on the edited, overly dramatized/sound effected snippets of each round we see is beyond me. I just want to see the entire fight, unedited, from one camera angle. Then maybe I'll start scoring it, but to score what they show as a viewer is pointless and makes no sense.
