Reports coming out that Adventure Kings are signing on as the major sponsor. Adventure Kings unfortunately have a blue logo which would look terrible with their colours

Dolphins bid director and general manager Terry Reader has been forced to defend the controversial decision to axe Redcliffe from the name of the team that will enter the NRL in 2023.

Reader was grilled on the topic by Peter FitzSimons on Nine's Sports Sunday.

The NRL on Monday confirmed the Dolphins had won the race to be the NRL's newest team.

In a change the left many scratching their heads, they decided to take the geographical location "Redcliffe" out of their name, despite the rest of their club's teams being called the Redcliffe Dolphins.

According to Reader, the architect behind the club's successful bid, the club's decision was made as part of a goal to "have a broader appeal" to NRL fans.
"The Redcliffe Dolphins will always exist and they will play in the Queensland Cup and they're the most successful team in the Queensland Cup era," Reader told Sports Sunday.

"But the Dolphins national brand differentiates itself from Redcliffe.
"The game has a massive opportunity to have a broader appeal, especially here in Queensland... we only have one team in Brisbane, now we have two.

"We will be honouring our past and always taking note of our traditions, but this going into the future."

FitzSimons questioned why the club would ditch the Redcliffe branding given its rich history, which was previously home to rugby league Immortal Arthur Beetson, who played for and coached the side.

"You've got this proud history, you've been there since 1947," FitzSimons said.

"The great Artie Beetson played for you. Why on earth, when you've got this glorious future in front of you... why would you cut off half your identity?

"Could you be more disrespectful to the town, the area, who you are."

Reader went on the defensive.

"We're certainly not cutting off the identity, that will remain in the Queensland Cup and it's part of our pathway where hopefully many boys and girls get the opportunity to go on and play at the highest level," Reader said.
"Our club will be more than just Redcliffe. Brisbane is bigger than just the CBD now, we happen to be situated in the fastest growing area in Queensland."

FitzSimons didn't stop, challenging Reader for a better response.

"There will be new traditions that will honour the past," Reader added.

"An Immortal, Arthur Beetson, we've already got things in play we want to bring to life to honour that.

"There will be many things that link back to the history and that won't be forgotten."

Jeez Fitzsimmons is thick.
The reasons to drop Redcliffe as the name are many and obvious such as Redcliffe has a population of 12k people and a stadium that is even smaller than that.

I really think this is just some kind of promotional strategy.
Could be, just like having a team in a foreign country, but not admittedly calling it New Zealand, i feel its a bad idea, localities mean something, i get its about maximizing reach, but thats a business decision, not a football one, i suppose north qld cowboys, not calling themselves the Townsville cowboys has encapsulated the region they are in

I don’t get that. Yes they can represent. But would anyone from Cairns or wherever not support the Townsville Cowboys. Seems to me that “North Queensland” fans are required to travel to Townsville to watch their team play.

Agreed, but I mean I think by the time they play their first game they will be called SQ Dolphins or Greater Brisbane Dolphins or something. The no name thing is just a strategy to whip up interest until they pick a name.
Greater Brisbane Dolphins would be a good anti broncos name.

Red, white and gold is a nice colour combo. That jersey isnt very exciting but hopefully the main one is a bit better. They could have got Wayne a better polo!

That gold looks like baby poo brown.

I always wanted this Redcliffe jersey as a kid.

From what I remember the colours were maroon instead of red.

The way that the Dolphin appears on the jersey is very much like how Souths have the bunny without a shield, or text, or any embellishment on their jersey. Especially how the Rabbitohs went back to that simple logo after the oval design in the 1980s/1990s.

I don't think that's a coincidence.

Pretty sure they said that was what they were doing when they got in.

The City or Redcliffe (which the Dolphins are from) had a population of 52,000 when it merged with Pine Rivers Shire and Caboolture Shires to become MBRC in 2007. The stadium is actually in Kippa-Ring itself, a suburb of Redcliffe.

As an NRL team they are now representing a bigger area than just representing the former city of Redcliffe (hence why they dropped the name) but they should be Moreton Bay Dolphins representing all the 480,000 who now live in their council region!

Should be Sunshine State Dolphins, as they are doing that (moreton lga) as well as greater northern brisbane, sunshine coast and have teamed up with CQ Capras too, thats basically Rockhampton- Suncorp in terms of representation, maybe a play on words from Sunshine State, to Sunshine Bay Dolphins or something like that, something that says this club represents the upper qld coastline
