The Federal Election - A Worth While Thread

Dear andy.

Mark latham has promised over 40,000 Tafe and Uni positions if he is elected. How will he achieve this? Where will he find the teachers to teach, the classrooms to hold the lessons and the accommodation for students?

Mark latham has also promised to raise another infantry battalion in townsville and also wants to move 3RAR(para) to townsville. So that means townsville will have 4 army battalions there equating to over 12,000 soldiers. Has mr latham taken into consideration that in order to do this he will also have to move the entire RAAF Richmond base to townsville to accomadate all the transport of soldiers and the training of the paras? He has only outlayed 375million for this project and i do not believe this is anywhere near enough money to achieve this.. Is this all just a ploy to try and get the military vote?

The biggest issue for me is the cost of higher education, University and TAFE, not to mention health

The way it is spiraling out of control, and the way Johhny Howard wants it to go higher (user pays), it will soon be unaffordable

Something must be done

Now

VOTE 1 ANDY for PM.

You're right CHicken Hunter. Latham's defence "policy" will not only be ineffective, but it will cause more headaches than help. If all of what you stated is moved to Townsville, then surely the training base in Duntroon would be need to be relocated also - to make it closer to this new MECCA of millitary activity??

As for the 40,000 student positions, yes he's kidding himself. Let's say we need, ideally, 1 teacher for every 15 students. But being more realistic, a figure of 1 to 40 would be much closer to the truth. Therefore, a minimum of 1000 teachers would be required to achieve this, let alone the classroom space and other facilities. It sounds a lot like a far fetched empty promise to me. Do you know the time period over which he proposed for this to happen?

I have heard that RAAF Richmond is on the chopping block anyway, and it is being divided amongst Willamstown (Newcastle) and Amberley (Ipswitch).

what about one of Lathams ways to give money back to lower income earners - INCREASE CIGARETTE TAXES!!!

all the low income earners reading the paper, smiling at their tax cuts then choking on their cigarette when they realise they'll have to pay an extra $4 a week to get back $6 a week

i still don't know who i'm going to vote

whoever is nicest to me on the day, again, i suppose

i'll be voting Liberal - mainly because of my folks as well, but on a personal level - under a Labor government, my job in my local Job Network Member's office is uncertain - i've looked through all of Labors policys that i could find - and they have nothing about their approach to Employment Services and in particular the Job Network.

Andy, no doubt you are aware of the two time-honoured discussion topics guaranteed to kill a warm, friendly, engaging atmosphere.
1. Religion
2. Politics
Just reading this thread has me longing for some mindless post-whore drivel.

I live in a safe Liberal seat, nothing gets done. We only see our local member in the week before the election. So I'll be voting Labor.

I am 27 so I have probably voted in 2 Federal elections already.

I have been racking my brains, and I can't remember who I voted for. Probably the first time I voted Labour as I lived in Newcastle which is, as Andy points out, a Labour stronghold.

I am trying to get interested in election issues, but I've been largely unsuccessful so far. How long have I got to make up my mind? Can't remember the date of the election...

Im not going to be able to vote untill i'm 20, because i'll be 17 and maybe 6-9 months old come next election (next year). Its really annoying when you want to express your political view (I'm a bit of a right-winger) while others who are 18 and have no views what-so-ever through their vote away...

I agree Martli, but you have to draw the line somewhere. Some may argue that most 16 year olds should get to vote, then some will say 14, 12 - what's the right age?

Maybe I'm not as well informed as I should be, but come election time I will be able to make a decision.

I personally think that 18 is fine, heaps of 16 year olds would probably treat it as a bit of a joke, or be sucked in by scams to get votes. I've just been delt a bad hand. On the up side though - since i'm young it gives me maximum time to think about if its really what I beleive in, I guess.

I'll be voting Labor - it was going to be the Greens until they bought out that drugs policy.

I guess like Timbo, I grew up in an environment where I was more or less told that the Liberals were the devil.

Something that hasn't changed.
