This week's Harvey Norman Women's National Championships will offer New Zealand the rare chance to test their elite teenage talent against some of Australia's best players.

New Zealand will enter a team in the tournament – a U19 selection dubbed Ahi Ka Aotearoa – for the first time this year.

With no age-grade national sides for the women currently, or opportunities to develop players through pathways like the Women's State of Origin U19s, NZRL GM of high performance Motu Tony said the National Championships will provide a valuable opportunity for emerging Kiwi Ferns.

Just dipped in and out of the National Championships coverage. Like last year, the refereeing is risibly dire. All the usual nit-picking imaginary nonsense. They really are doing their utmost to ruin every game. Becomes unwatchable at times, unless you enjoy being driven to despair.

The South Australia team were penalized for "holding the ball in the scrum". All that happened was the ball hit the lock forward's leg. She didn't lift her foot for the ball to go clean through. Maybe the solution is to not put the ball in the scrum at all. Just roll it to the side, well away from anyone in the scrum.

Sienna Lofipo hopes she is on the path to future State of Origin glory after the teenage whiz was named as the 19th player in the Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons Game II squad.
