The Giltinan Shield for minor premiership

Wests is Best

After hearing The roosters coach saying that he isnt really fussed on winning the minor premiership in the upcoming final round match against Souths, but is more focussed on winning matches (or words to that effect), it made me think about the value placed on winning the JJ Giltinan shield. This shield was once awarded to the premiership winner and has been an integral part of some of of the most famous scenes in our game and did so many laps of honour over many decades with all of the great premiership winning sides before it got demoted.
Is it just me or do others think that this magnificent shield with so much history behind it is perhaps being demeaned as an award for the minor premiership?

it's meaningless.

though if Easts win tonight I'll say that it's really valuable and a true indicator of the best team. But if we don't then I'll stick to my theory that the club championship is the most important trophy in league

It should be seen as more of an achievement than it is at the moment. Just some thoughts ...

1. The Minor premiership is a name that could be changed to something better
2. Prize money should be increased
3. Salary cap should be adjusted upwards for the winner
4. The name of the trophy - most people will not know who JJ Giltinan was
5. the winners should be lauded more instead of just the Grand final winners.

It's a great thing to win imo. That night at Kogarah in 2009 was the first time I've ever seen my team win it and it was a special night, especially since we also won it on the last round. It all turned to shit that year for us obvs, but it's still a cherished memory. Either Souffs or Rorters are going to have a thrill tonight, enjoy.

Unfortunately the only way it would mean something is if the finals consisted of the top three teams only, with first place going straight into the Grand Final, and second and third playing off to play them the following week.

Top 5 worked well. To win the premiership you had to be or beat the minor premiers. There have been numerous occasions under the top 8 system where the grand final winners have had the good fortune of having the minor premiers eliminated by another team without having to contest them. 2011, Manly didn't play Melbourne, 2009*, Melbourne didn't have to play Illawarra, 2005, Wests didn't play Parramatta.

For a few years, if the Minor premiers lost the Final (or were eliminated prior to the final), they had the right to a rematch for the premiership against the team that won the final.

I agree. Top 5 was and still is the best and fairest finals series in my opinion.

Perhaps the top 8 could be used as a qualification for the world club challenge, to keep fans interested in the NRL season for longer, as unfortunately, if we had a top 5, most clubs would have been out of contention about two months ago.

1. The Minor premiership is a name that could be changed to something better

Purely symbollic. Would not really increase importance.

2. Prize money should be increased

Agreed.

3. Salary cap should be adjusted upwards for the winner

Disagree. The whole point of the Salary Cap is to even out the field and ensure that the same teams aren't winning. You're essentially making a move to change that.

4. The name of the trophy - most people will not know who JJ Giltinan was

Irrelevant. The only reason people know about Proven-Summons is because we are being constantly reminded of the 63 grand final image.

To rename the shield would be to spit in the face of the game.

5. the winners should be lauded more instead of just the Grand final winners.

Here is what I think we can do:

- Equal prize money for both the minor premiership and premiership.
- Make this a significant amount of money.
- If you want to rename the minor premiers and premier why not call the regular season the 'premiership' and the proven-summons trophy - the 'championship'. At the end of the year you get the NRL Premiers and the NRL Champions. Both are prestigious.

Instead of a pathetic $100,000 dollars in total how about $100,000 to each player who has played a first grade game that season. With $50,000 of it going directly to them and $50,000 going to a charity of each players choice.

You could have each player announce their charity when the shield is awarded. It would make a heap of positive headlines.

Was not suggesting they change the name i was more thinking they promote the name and who he was and what he did. They have done this very successfully with the Provan - Summons gladiator image as you allude too.

You go from suggesting the name change from minor premiers is purely symbolic but then you go on to suggest a name change or two yourself and call them 'prestigious' :sarcasm:

However I do like your name suggestions.

Everyone says the Minor Premiership is nothing, but considering we've won nothing since the year I was born it would certainly mean alot to see the team carrying the JJ Giltinan Shield once again

I would like to see the Minor premiers prizemoney to be a lot bigger as well. However, to be fair, you would have to suspend the premiership during the origin period and have all teams play each other once.
