Everyone says the Minor Premiership is nothing, but considering we've won nothing since the year I was born it would certainly mean alot to see the team carrying the JJ Giltinan Shield once again

Souths won it in 89?

It's a great thing to win imo. That night at Kogarah in 2009 was the first time I've ever seen my team win it and it was a special night, especially since we also won it on the last round. It all turned to shit that year for us obvs, but it's still a cherished memory. Either Souffs or Rorters are going to have a thrill tonight, enjoy.

I remember that was the first game on Friday night telecast, & afterwards was the Tigers v Bulldogs game.

Bulldogs just needed to win for the MP, but Tigers smacked em.

Just as the telecast of the Dragons game ended you could see the players & Bennett celebrating in the crowd, & I knew we won it.

I went nuts. Means nothing...... pfft tsst

Instead of a pathetic $100,000 dollars in total how about $100,000 to each player who has played a first grade game that season. With $50,000 of it going directly to them and $50,000 going to a charity of each players choice.

You could have each player announce their charity when the shield is awarded. It would make a heap of positive headlines.

Sure lets give away $3 million+ in prize money to the players, why not.

Oh! They should all get their own unicorn too

That was the worst bit of programming of all time.

Billed as a battle of the minor premiership all week..... then they show all the dragons players celebrating and Bennett jogging onto the field to join them as the full time siren went, completely spoiling the delayed game's result

Would have been great for dragons fans at home though to just kick back and watch the dogs, knowing they were going to get toweled up

yes.

then in the 1990 offseason the club was rocked with claims of players taking ElephantJuice of varying nature (Performance enhancing, recreational etc)

The picked up the spoon in 1990, winning just 2 of 22 games.

You go from suggesting the name change from minor premiers is purely symbolic but then you go on to suggest a name change or two yourself and call them 'prestigious' :sarcasm:

However I do like your name suggestions.

I was more going on the idea that simple name change wouldn't serve a purpose.
However, with equal prize money (increased for both) that's where the prestige comes in.

For a few years, if the Minor premiers lost the Final (or were eliminated prior to the final), they had the right to a rematch for the premiership against the team that won the final.

This is often forgotten and is essentially what made the minor premiership. Obviously we can't do it now so it really loses any credibility it had.

As a junior cricketer we won the comp after the minor premiers challenged us and also lost a comp after we challenged. It's quite fun really. Our footy team was poo though lol

If you want to rename the minor premiers and premier why not call the regular season the 'premiership' and the proven-summons trophy - the 'championship'. At the end of the year you get the NRL Premiers and the NRL Champions. Both are prestigious.

Agree 100%

I've always felt that the finals series should be our equivalent of a cup competition. I'd love to win the minor premiership but unfortunately with our sporting landscape the real stuff starts next week.

I understand the hype of the grand final but really being the best team over the course of the "regular" season is the true test of a teams greatness.

For Easts, 2002 was "the big one" but 2004 was easily the better season and the one I look back on more fondly.

I also think the J.J. Giltinan Shield is infinitely superior to the current trophy.

Supporters can always remember when their team won a premiership. But few if any can remember when their team won the minor premiership. Finishing the premiership on top means nothing.

Their is really no benefit to coming 1st over 2nd.

the system came under fire in 1944 when it was alleged that minor premiers Newtown intentionally lost the final against Balmain to force a second final so that they could get double the gate takings.

Balmain beat them in the second final.

The system was continued til 1953, before a Grand Final was decided upon whereby there would be no more 'challenges'

+1

An awesome sight to see the team you love capture an iconic trophy.

That picture stayed as my desktop background at work until I was able to replace with a better trophy photo a year later..

It's only 'irrelevant' to those who don't win it..

Top 5 worked well. To win the premiership you had to be or beat the minor premiers. There have been numerous occasions under the top 8 system where the grand final winners have had the good fortune of having the minor premiers eliminated by another team without having to contest them. 2011, Manly didn't play Melbourne, 2009*, Melbourne didn't have to play Illawarra, 2005, Wests didn't play Parramatta.

Completely agree... Final 5 is clearly the best format.. if you don't finish 1st on the ladder to win the trophy you MUST defeat the minor premier at some point in the finals to win..

Plus the reward for the MP is only 1 game to play to make the grand final.. (if you win it of course.. otherwise its only 2 games even with the loss)

Plus plus given there were only the top 5 teams, you didn't have to waste games playing teams who really didn't deserve to be in the finals.. eg, whoever finishes 7th and 8th this year, do they really deserve to play finals footy given the season they've had?

Plus plus plus we used to have a top 5 in a 16 team comp, so it's not a question of the comp being too big for only 5 in the finals..

A top 6 is more than enough.

No team has ever won a premiership from below 6th on the ladder.

Just have a top 6

6th has 1 premiership (1995) and been Runners Up 3 times (1999, 2010, 2011)
7th has been Runners Up once (1996)
8th has been Runners Up once (2009)

6th has 23 wins and 19 losses
7th has 12 wins and 18 losses
8th has 5 wins and 17 losses

Just have a top 6 like this
A - 1 v 2
B - 3 v 4
C - 5 v 6 - Loser Eliminated

D - Loser B v Winner C - Loser Eliminated
E - Loser A v Winner B

F - Winner D v Loser E - Loser Eliminated
G - Winner A v Winner E - Loser Eliminated

H - Winner F v Winner G

And having a thread with posters reminiscing about the time their team won the MP proves just that.

I can't remember when my team won the Minor Premiership.

But that's because it last happened in 1941

Bullshit. Manly's minor premierships of 1995, 1996 and 1997 were Manly's most dominant seasons in my lifetime. Sure, we're disappointed that it wasn't 3 premierships but 3 MPs and a premiership was a pretty reasonable result given the quality of sides playing in the 90s (Canberra, Canterbury, Brisbane, St George, etc).

The JJ Giltinan Shield belongs to the NSWRL and strictly speaking should be awarded to the NSW Cup grand final winners. Not entirely sure how the NRL got their mitts on it.
