1995 and 2004 obviously the happiest times but 1998 was extremely enjoyable throughout the entire finals series

Also went to the 1996, 1997 (ARL) and 1999 grand finals just to spectate and enjoy the footy and atmosphere :)

although i was only young (not that im not now) i went to the the 02 and 03 GF's

2002

a) i remember me dad and my brother going out and buy all this roosters stuff (i still got my 02 Away western union jersey even though it doesnt fit me and thats about all i remember in the week before.
b) we arrived at my unlces pumped, my sisters were to go shopping with my aunty, while us boys went to the footy, on the train ride to Telstra Stadium it seemed as though every single person was a warriors fan, everyone chatting up stacy jones and cleary and i was like 9ish so they all looked huge, i had my roosters jersey on and my roosters blow up finger, so i just sat quietly. i remember sitting down watching the lower grade GF's and looking over the other side of the feild seeing all this black, in my mind we were the underdogs.
c) when the warriors ran onto the feild the crowd went ballistic, it was deafening. then the roosters ran on, it was louder, the whole stadium erupted, i knew we were going to win. through the entire first half i watch a battle and when halftime came i was hardly confident, dad kept saying that the only score that counted was the final score and i tried to believe him. When the second half came i got that feeling, and we started playing well... then it happened. Freddy got taken out by tookey, the whole chook pen erupted, the asian guy sitting on the other side of day went of his nuts, and i thought to myself, oh god, freddy!!! when he came back out he was bandaged up and i knew he was ok. finally when fletcher scored i knew that the game was well and truely ours. and i finished off my coca cola.
d) after the game was one big rush, it seemed that every person that was there ran to catch the train that we wanted to catch and we finally got on the train, my shoulder spent the first 15mins of the trip back to wollongong pressed up against the door.

2003

a) i was more relexed this week, i wore exactly what i wore the year before hopeing for the win to still be in the clothes. this time it was me, dad my brother and my sister, we all had our own bottles of drink and bags of lollies, i felt good.
b) the train ride up was totally different, there were planty of seats and i spent the trip explaining to these old panthers fans how this was "exactly like 75" explaining to them what my dad told me the day before. in 72 we lost, 73 we didnt play, in 74 we won, in 75 we won. in 2000 we lost, in 01 we didnt play, in 02 we won... soooo what gonna happen. WE ARE GOING TO WIN!
c) i spent the game sharing my lollies with the modest panther fan sitting next to me who was by himself. while watching some drunk panther fan hit on every girl at the game, well thats when he wasnt screaming and shouting at all the roosters fans, how we were cheaters etc, etc. the game went too fast and i just sighed when the final whistle blew. gave the panther fan next to my one more redskin as we packed up and walked out.
d) i walked to the station crying as dad told me it just wasnt meant to be. dreading the quiet train ride back to wollongong.

i didnt go to 04.

81 and 99.

Lead up - you don't need to attend the GF to know that. I remember the blue and gold doughnuts, the Sea Eagle pies at North Parramatta in '76, every shop decked out in blue and gold.

well ive been to a few grand finals so ill do one.

1999. an eventful league year in our household. the sharks won the minor premiership but alas. meanwhile my dads team was booted. they were looking top 8 material until a 7 week suspension to tricky trindall.

The Week
the week leading up i missed 2 days of school due to the grief of the sharks loss. 18 wins, minor premiers...peach, rat...ET. to lose to the dragons was bad enough, we had beaten em twic in the regular season. it was our year... but mundine..oh man. i hate that merkin. i really... my blood boils. i have to leave the room when he appears on TV.
i had a bad feeling at 8 nil up. Rat was off with bad cork..and we should have been up by 20. but peach grounded the ball of someones foot and there was a tiny mistake in a play the ball that got seen in a replay. second half plan was to try and hold em but once they got a try that was it. we were shot. credit to the dragons. they were superb in the second half.

i got over that by the wednesday, and told the old man that i wanted to go anyway. but there was other rumblings a foot. apparently the NRL had this criteria and the rabbitohs were in the cross hairs. my dad, a souths fan was steeling himself for what he believed was the inevitable.

we drove up the day before and listened to the AFL grand final courtesy of HG and Roy. like in the NRL the minor premiers Essendon had been knocked out in the preliminary final and the kangaroos beat Carlton pretty easily.

Game Day

i decided i couldnt wear my sharks jersey to the game. the wounds were still deep and if anyone said anything about the weeks events i would have gone rambo on their ass.

caught the train from hornsby into strathfield and then to olympic park. didnt see a melbourne fan until we got to the ground. listened to the supreme confidence of some dragons fans on the train. my dad struck up a conversation about the bullsh*t criteria and how we should all go to the rally.

watched the lower grades and the pre game performance by vanessa amerosi. lame. saw another despondant sharks fan. i nodded. he nodded back.

GAME

the game was probably the best ive ever been at. the atmosphere was electric. for one ive never seen a mexican wave that good.
first half was all dragons and it was loud. i cheered the blacklock try. you couldnt not. fantastic.
i booed everytime mundine touched it. got a few weird looks from dragons fans.

so then the second half happens. melbourne get on the board but the dragons score back. they cant lose. surely. im up to my 5th coke an am steeling myself for a dragons premiership.
mundine goes over and i nearly vomit in my seat. but no. he drops it! hooray. thatll learn ya you dream ruining big mouthed f**kwad!
once the storm scored again you could hear the collective tightening of the dragons fans arseholes. the nerves were there. you could tell. the wave was coming. lead..slipping.
kimmorley puts up the kick, smith scores!
no he drops it. f**k
wait, Ainscough has taken his head off! penalty try!

what a game. how did that noddy guy win the clive churchill medal? how does a team win in its second year? where did i put my chips? so many questions.

Aftermath

my return to school was a strange one. i didnt make a big deal of the game to my 2 dragons supporting mates at the time. however i did get a congratulatory announcement to the storm put in the school newsletter!

however, the season is apparently not over, as i am now going up to sydney with my dad and his friend to attend the george piggins rally.

Have you ever attended a Grand Final that your team was in? How was a) The week leading up to the game b) The day of the game c) The game itself and d) After the game, for you?
I've been to a number of Grand Finals in my time, but only the one for my team - Newcastle. I've been to the 1997, 2000, 2003, & 2005 Grand Finals.

I'll go into my experiences of the 1997 Grand Final here. Not only because it was the one I've been to that the Knights were in, but because it was my first GF. I was 16, and it was an awesome experience for me.

The week leading up to the game: When Newcastle defeated North Sydney, I was initially over the moon because WE WERE IN THE GRAND FINAL! Within a few minutes, I realised that I wouldn't be going, nor would I be able to see the game for a week afterwards. This was -as we all know- the year of SuperLeague, and Perth did not show any ARL games at all except the State Of Origin series. My grandfather all year had been taping the Knights games and sending them across so Dad & I could watch them. Once the Knights had made the GF, I phoned up Ch9 to see if they would show the ARL GF. They gave me a firm 'no' (which incidentally, turned out to be wrong as they changed their mind later in the week). I was gutted.

On the Monday, I got home from school to the news that Mum & Dad had borrowed money from some family members and it (only just) allowed Dad, myself, and my sister to fly to NSW for the GF (my sister wasn't going to the game though). My cousin had slept outside one of the ticketing outlets in Newcastle and gotten tickets for us. All of a sudden, I was going to the GF!

A few regular days passed, and on the Thursday night, we flew to Sydney, and trained it up to Newcastle on the Friday morning. As soon as we reached the outskirts of Newcastle, there was this electricity. A vibe. That night I went with my cousin to the Legends Of League match at Marathon Stadium.

The day of the game: Was tense, but exciting. All week, despite the 'My heart says Newcastle, but my head says Manly' comments I was constantly hearing, I was confident we would win it. There was a few moments of gut-wrenching doubt when I thought 'What if we lose?'. We -myself, my dad, grandfather, grandmother, and cousin- got ready and headed to Broadmeadow Station, where we boarded the train which was all decorated in red and blue and nicknamed 'The Knight Rider'!

We got to the stadium and sat in our seats -behind the corner where John Hopoate scored in the 1st half. 70% of the crowd were supporting the Knights that day, however when Manly ran onto the field, their supporters were loud! It surprised me. The Knights ran out and by this time, I had nearly lost my voice with all the cheering (and booing of Manly!). Julie Anthony sung the national anthem (best rendition I have heard to this day), and it was game on!

The game itself: Fast. Very fast. At halftime I sat there feeling it had only been 20mins or so since kickoff! I remember laughing at the large Manly supporter in front of me when Toovey was stumbling around after nearly knocking himself out (not the MacDougall-Toovey incident). I remember the Matty Johns attempted field goal in the last 4mins when it was 16-all. I can still see the ball go up and look for certain like it was going in. I went up, only to hear the massive disappointed sigh of about 30,000 people at once. It hit the upright and bounced away. Bugger! The following few minutes were the most intense I have ever had. Strangely, all I can remember of 'that' try of Darren Albert's is a still image, not a moving picture. I see the defensive line on the 10m line, and I see a red-&-blue streak (which I later learn to be Alby) on the other side (my side as I was behind the dead-ball line). I don't remember him putting the ball down, nor the celebrations of the Knights, except Matthew Johns waving his jersey around over his head -using the corner post I think. I was up on my seat jumping and cheering and yahooing. That was the most emotional moment of my life (and still is), and it was the most incredible feeling I have ever experienced. I never believed in people crying because they were so happy prior to this day, but I changed my beliefs when I was doing it! I couldn't help it!

After the game: I remember walking out of the SFS after the victory lap had passed us. We were heading to our bus to take us back to Central train station. There were people trying to play tennis in the courts beside the stadium, but they were just standing there watching all these red-and-blue maniacs going absolutely ballistic, shouting NEW-CAS-TLE NEW-CAS-TLE and singing 'We're Here Because We're Here ..' (Knights fans about my age and older will know what this is all about). We got back to Newcastle and headed out to Newcastle Road (not too far a walk from where we were staying with family) and waited for the Knights team bus to pass us. It eventually crawled passed us at about 11:30pm I think. I would've liked to have headed into the Newcastle Workers Club where the party was really at (when the Knights eventually got there, I mean!), but I was 16, very tired, on top of the world, and couldn't wait for whatever the following day brought. I think I eventually got to sleep at about 2am.

Holy sh*t, I've just realised I've typed a lot more than I thought I had! I apologise for the length of my reply.

I don't think I will ever have such an experience again in my life, so I am so lucky I had this opportunity. I have actually got a few things I'm supposed to do tonight, but I will now be watching the '97 Grand Final instead!

Just one final addition to my novel, after I returned to WA a week or so later, and once the school holidays finished, I returned to school, and a schoolmate of mine told me he turned the tv on on GF day (which Ch9 had decided to show the GF live afterall!), and it was just before Robbie O'Davis scored in the 2nd half to level the game with 5mins to go. He decided to watch to see what all my fuss of League was all about. He said "When that guy scored to win you'se the game, I just thought 'sh*t. We'll never hear the end of this!'". He was right!

'02 GF

As soon as we beat Cronulla we started planning it. Monday morning i went to Ticketek and was first in the queue to buy a ticket. The few days in Sydney before the game were good. The mrs used to get a bit nervous with big crowds, unfamiliar places so we did a dry run, caught the ferry to homebush and did a stadium tour.

Game Day-
took the ferry to homebush like we practiced, there were plenty of warriors fans on the boat with us. Walking into the stadium was great, soaking up the atmosphere.
Stacey jones' try obviously the highlight. Went nuts for a full minute after he scored that, pelvic thrusts, fist pumping, the lot. Made the trip worthwhile.

Post match, caught the train back to the city. It was fine except for a slanging match between 2 kiwis in beige brigade outfits against a whole gang of aussies nearly got out of control. The aussies were dickheads behaving badly, considering their team won.

Even though we lost it was a cool experience
