The Gruen Transfer hates Rugby League

Nothing wrong with Rodney Rude. Years ago, Johnny Garfield was pretty funny. I don’t mind Billy Birmingham’s send up of Wide World of Sports. I’ve seen Austen Tayshus a couple of times on stage and he’s funny. The ABC once had a stand-up show called The Big Gig and they had some good acts. Glynn Nicholas was pretty funny. Will Anderson isn’t funny. That other AFL loving nice person Dave Hughes isn’t funny either,

In fairness Dave Hughes gives Rugby League and The Storm in particular a pretty good run on the 7PM Project despite being a Victorian AFL lover.

I just remembered... the segue they used last week on Gruen to bring up AFL and having so much female support and being so awesome was TAB sportsbet - and Munsie being on the NRL ads and the chick doing the AFL ads.

Quite pathetic really, not to mention wrong, as Munsie sometimes does AFL (i.e. the Brownlow on Monday night) and the chick is sometimes on NRL ads.

Hard to believe they'd use such a pathetic, tenuous link to insult the NRL and praise the INDIGENOUS game, but then again, too many Victorians and tryhard comedians will lead to such outcomes.

Hipster f**ks. They don't deserve any better than to be from Melbourne. The only good comedian to ever walk the streets down there was Seinfeld and he aptly described the place as the anus of the world.

Agree that was bullshit. Jamie Rogers (the chick) has done the NRL updates several times.

Whoever said that these people perceive themselves as "upper class" and therefore think that RL is purely the domain of the pitiful bogan was dead on.

My girlfriend is pretty high up in one of the agencies that regularly gets a run on GRUEN. I've spent some time with Sampson and a few other low grade guests (me,me fabulous me). While they for the most part are devastatingly intelligent they are also insanely smug, arrogant and completely removed from reality. Mostly, they don't like sport of any kind at all.

Everyone knows it. They're just a bunch of over-paid coke snorters who love the sounds of their own voices.

I wouldn't be particularly quick to proclaim their intelligence either, but that can mean a lot of things.

During the pitch segment last night, Gruen used ad agencies from WA and SA and to no surprise they had their usual lovefest for AFL using some Tard player Wankerneen

The Australian comedy scene is atrocious. Full of smug wankers really.

Let me correct that.

The mainstream comedy scene in Australia is generally operated by one 'talent' agency and their roster is full of smug wankers.

Just watched Gruen Transfer

And that afl loving prick will Anderson loved pointing out the fact that there are about 6 Afl only corporate ads on TV at the moment ie Toyota. Cadbury etc

And there were no NRL only ads, except a shared 4/20 pie ad

Is this where the east coast centric game comes un stuck

If a big corporate wants to run a national ad. They seem to always choose AFL

You are only just realising this now?

Not only 6 AFL (the competition) ads, but I can think of 2 massive club ads that are getting huge airtime the VERO Lions ad and the JEEP Tigers ad.

Very annoyed at the (expected) pro-VFL bias at the ABC.

If they actually looked hard enough they'd have seen that the Roosters did a TV ad in conjunction with jersey sponsor Opel, and Souths have run a lot of online cooking themed ads with training sponsor Kenwood. I'm sure there are other examples.

EDIT Just remembered Gold Coast has also done a funny TV ad with major sponsor iSelect.

I live in Sydney and haven't seen the AFL/Sponsor ads they showed. Unless the run exclusively on the AFL Channel. I am guessing they only run in certain markets so not national ads. I have seen TV ads for Suzuki with Billy Slater and Lowes ads and Sirro's ever popular Blockout Shutters ad still runs. Pretty sure the Broncos have done ads for NRMA Insurance in QLD. But if you listened to the Gruen team nobody likes NRL. Telstra are the competition sponsor so there must be opportunities out there.

If the AFL can do it more often so should the NRL. In saying that Sally Pearson won Olympic Gold for Australia and is likeable and attractive yet I haven't seen her in any ads so maybe there just isn't much available for sports stars. Yet every ad break has at least one commercial starring former Newcastle Knights cheergirl Jennifer Hawkins.
