The 'how to improve the F7s' thread

Might lodge my ideas here, while they're in my head.

Finals Eligibility
New rule that teams can't register players to play their first game in the semi-finals? No dramas at all with how any of it happened this season as it's perfectly within the rules. However the rules are open to manipulation, and there's nothing to stop a team getting into the finals using a squad of ten all season, and then recruiting five new players from somewhere to form the nucleus of their team in the final series... Perhaps someone that hasn't played a game during the year shouldn't be eligible for semis, the onus being on captains to recruit and play any additional players before the last round? (And any new players interested in F7s during the finals series can be easily kept interested to play in the PvP due to take place shortly after.)

PvP
The PvP is a great idea especially for new/proposed teams and players, but I've noticed that existing sides that put their hand up to enter often struggle with numbers at that time of year? Perhaps one way to make sure there's some good match-ups and that everyone who wnats a go gets one is to think about having a Barbarians team compete. This would be made up of current players from a range of teams - this would take the pressure off members of an existing squad who have entered to keep playing at that time of year, while still giving the chance to any keen existing players from a range of squads to better themselves and get more games in an F7s environment ahead of the new season? Would need co-ordination and captaincy, but could be a way of making sure the numbers in the PvP teams balance and giving individual players a chance to show their wares before joining an official team.

Um, that's it. I think everything else goes OK. Except the usual chestnut of making sure enough people are interested in being referees, and given the respect by players at all times that's needed for them to continue to carry out the role.

I also want to say that I think the comp did really well in getting 5 posts in most of the time - I think that's improved on previous seasons with the incentive rule in place (number of posts counting higher than for and against for table position). Makes it harder work for captains ensuring depth in their squad and making sure people come through with the posts, but it's worth it.

Six teams managed perfect records, or missed out by one post (usually just a result of an occasional misundertsanding). One team missed out by five posts and another club missed six (probably could each have done with one more active player in their roster), and one club just plain struggled (which seems to happen to one club every year no matter what).

Glad that the for and against factor in terms of the unpredictability of the struggling club didn't come into play as much on ladder positions, as it was the number of posts that is most important - something ateam themselves can control.

Here's an idea to keep the comp interesting

If we had a ten team comp, split it into two conferences say A and B. Conferences decided by how teams finished the year before Ie; 1,3,5,7,9 - 2,4,6,8,10.

new teams could go either way.

For finals it would be the top 3 from each.

Team 1 has week off. 2 plays three.

Winner of 2 v 3 plays 1 to get conference winner.

Then, winner of each conference plays off in the GF

I like your idea buddy it could act like the cricket world cup with like the super 6 stage then the semis and final

i dont know if this has been mentioned anywhere and i cant be arsed trolling through all the posts at present but, how about one round where the actual artcle topic is posted when the team thread is put up. ref of the game could choose the topic prior. ok, so it could be very boring to mark (hence the ref getting choice of topic ;-) ) but it would also bring out creativity as people try to write something completely different than everyone else.

You're being prescient again Mortie....

I could handle the idea of a theme week, but there might be some pretty repetative posts getting put out.

Who's going to thunk up the theme ?

Is there a shortness of Referees?

I'd ref a week here and there if needed, or are captains the only playing refs?

yous are my dear goz. just imagine being allowed to thunk up your very own topic (league related of course ;-) ) for the match you were reffing. ok, 4 or 5 would have you reaching for the pen to stab your eyes out with boredom but it would challenge writers to actually think outside the square and be a little more flamboyant, controversial and creative. myself personally would relish the challenge one game out of the year. saves me doing the initial thunking.

i'm sure something from the depths of your grey mater would be, ah, interesting.

better stop polishing the crystal ball. i'm getting genies appearing now

We could do with more qualified players to be guest refs. Doesn't have to be captains, Rabs for example was a guest ref. So was MysteryGirl.

During the PVPs is a good time to try out. Like the teams, ref opportunities during the PVP tournament will be open to all comers.

IF we have too many applicants, perhaps we could experiment with different ideas of multiple refs.

Haha, might have to brush up on my grammer 'shortness'....

Yeah i'd give it a go during the PvP if required.

Some good ideas being chucked around here. I think Crusher's one for extra posts (a second poster, that is) has merit.

i still think a team should be able to submit all 7 articles and then the best 5 scores are taken.

There were a number of times this year where even though we (the Lions) named 7, we were lucky to get 4 across the line. In other words, the other 3 were fake, and were never going to post anything.

Under that proposal, we would have been punished further, and would have been even more discouraging from a team point of view.

I think that one can go into the scrap bin. ;-)
