I honestly couldn't have cared less if the Tigers got NC, in saying that the Tigers were only looking to sign him at the completion of his contract, unlike the Panthers who intentionally created a situation to poach a coach for next year who was under contract. Grubby act from Penrith!
But to Penrith's (Gould's) credit, they made Barrett believe he had a job so they've left him out in the cold for next year. Well played.

Tigers fans like most other NRL fans feel that Cleary did the wrong thing. As I said before, when a guy builds a image of integrity and being a good guy and than white ants you it’s worse than when a known bad guy like Gould white ants you

So how is this different to Wests Tigers so-called integrity when they "white-anted" the likes of Michael Potter and Jason Taylor?

What actually happened there, I heard that he thought he had the Penrith gig but haven't heard anything else about it.

I'm sure it's all been said already but I'd take Maguire over Cleary. The reputation surrounding Cleary is strangely high for a coach who's lost 1 grand final in over 10 years of coaching.

Also the idea that a grown man is so keen to be coached by his Dad is also a weird one to me.

Yeah, Barrett believed he had the job so he tendered his resignation with Manly mid-season. Penrith were obviously still in negotiations with Cleary and that's the way they went. Looks like it worked out well for all concerned (or at least those that matter).

Why did he think he had the Penrith job?

Why did he think he had the Penrith job?

The story from a Tigers insider who has a proven track record of being correct:

* Barrett had the Panthers job verbally agreed, but needed to get out of his Manly contract, so he resigned

* Ivan went to Panthers and said he wanted to coach Nathan. Either the Panthers took him back or he was bringing Nathan to Wests in 2020

* Penrith decided on The Clearys and agreed to have him from 2021. Ivan was the one who wanted to come earlier

My gripe has always been with Ivan, he was the one who acted unethically. Not Gould or the Panthers

He was once comfortably my favourite coach.

Never saw this type of bloke in Ivan the Terrible.

You mean when they sacked them for failing to meet contractual performance criteria?

Love to know what performance criteria Anthony Griffin failed to achieve coincidentally.
Playing constantly bad football that would never threaten the top sides

Wow, so they not only screwed the Tigers, they screwed Barrett too.

Anyway Cleary better deliver out there at Penrith because there are lots of people who are just waiting for him to crash and burn. Outside nine with its connections with Gould, most of the media are going to give him hell at every opportunity.

Also as I said a while ago, coaching your son in under tens has issues, but do at the top level where money and egos are involved your asking for trouble

Did Tigers get any compensation for letting him go? Im in agreement with most, I think Tigers have got the better deal with Madge. I guess getting the inconsistent Warriors to a GF takes something special but he's hardly set the world alight since. Only so long you can trade on past glories. If he takes Panthers nowhere SL could be beckoning for Ivan in a couple of years time.

I've heard reports of $400000, so a far chunk of Macguire's salary for next year.
