Anyway:

REAL MADRID president Ramon Calderon finally appears to have conceded defeat in his battle to land Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United.

He declared: “Ronaldo is an impossible signing. His club don’t want to sell him.

“We can do nothing if the club that owns him don’t want to sell. We never approach a player under contract. This is not Real Madrid policy and especially not with a club with whom we are such good friends.”

Barcelona presidential candidate Sandro Rosell has now vowed to sign Ronaldo if voted into power.

Again, how does this compare with a club-owned newspaper making up lies to unsettle a player that they haven't even bid for? How does this compare to every person with a mouth at Madrid talking about Ronaldo to the press every week?

Its the same principle.

You objected to Real unsettling a player who was based in another country and had 4 years to run on his contract.

Man U played a media game with Owen Hargreaves for 12 months. He had just signed a 5 year extension. The exact same principle. Means might have been different, motivation exactly the same.

Hargreaves: Wanted to move back to England after his (individually) successful world cup.
Ronaldo: Happy and settled in Manchester.

Hargeaves: First link to United made by a third party, neutral newspaper with no quotes from anybody at United.
Ronaldo: Linked by a club-owned newspaper, frequent lies over a period of 24 months.

Hargeaves: One or two comments about the situation from Fergie over the entire 12 months.
Ronaldo: Caldéron in the media every day telling them how good Ronaldo is and how much they want him.

These situations are the same? Come on now, I know you're a Bayern fan and I'm not suggesting United were angels during the Hargeaves situation, but us chasing a 26 year old English midfielder based in Germany who wanted to move to England (his family are from Bolton) is nothing like Madrid's constant harassment of the 23 year old widely considered the best in the world who just won the golden boot in England and Europe, based at (arguably) the biggest club in the world, who are the current PL and European champions.

LOL.... you do know that Hargreaves never actually lived in england, don't you? Yeah, he had family in the UK, but I'm pretty sure he is Canadian and lived on air force bases in Germany, and had never actually lived in england

PDJ, Fishy is in no way singling out the specific personal and mental status of each player, all he is saying is that Manchester Unites also commit the 'crime' of publicly trying to sign a player, no matter how much goes on in order to do so.

every club does it. some more publicly than others, some through third parties, but every club 'taps' players to some extent. Real have been ridiculous shouldnt be taken seriously.

I remember when I was in Germany for the world cup, one of the big tabloids in Munich had a front page story about Bayern wanting Luca Toni. Funny how that story popped up the day before the final

i find it all interesting.... i mean... if theres one club that Real Madrid cant bully around with transfers its Utd.

Utd have the money and the prestige to more than match Madrid.

Picking me up because I used the word back? Awful strong argument there.

His family are all from the UK, his dad was a Bolton youth player, does it matter where he was born? Home is where the heart is, as they say.

Hell, even if he wanted to move back just to cash in on his successful world cup, he still wanted out. You can't offer a good reason why it's a fair comparing (by your own description) a bench player who wanted out to the best in the world who is happy at his club. You signed van Bommel, so Hargreaves had no real place in the team and United were interested. Bayern just wanted to prove a point after being embarrassed by the Ballack deal so they dug their heels in and United overpaid to get him.

Nothing like the Ronaldo situation at all.

Home is where the heart is or where the pay cheque is!

You're a bit wrong there. He had just signed a contract extension and only wanted out when Man U got in his ear.

Bit of a timeline in the saga is something like

Ballack leaves
Bayern sign Van Bommell
Hargreaves signs contract extension
Hargreaves has a good world cup
Man United start talking about signing Hargreaves
Suddenly Hargreaves wants to leave (he only wanted to leave after being approached by Man U or their 'third party')
Bayern dig in, nothing to do with Ballack, we werent embarrased, but they dug in because Hargreaves had just signed a contract extension.

Fast forward 12 months, Bayern finished fourth, squad overhaul needed Man U still tapping Hargreaves, see ya later

Nothing like the Ronaldo situation at all.

You are completly missing or ignoring the point, which is most big clubs, including yours, do what real have done, that is, use the media to unsettle a player they want. They might not do it the same way, but they do it nevertheless.

The principle is the same, which is what I've said all along.

Ferguson has only been talking up the prospect of signing Micah Richards for the last four weeks, yet they have the hide to whinge about Real?

http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_3616797,00.html
Manchester United are expected to launch a £20m bid to lure Micah Richards from neighbours Manchester City to Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson is reported to have been keeping tabs on the England defender for some time and the imminent sale of Gerard Pique to Barcelona - United confirmed on Tuesday that an agreement has been reached between the two clubs - is likely to result in a formal offer.

Pique's departure leaves Wes Brown as the lone cover for both Nemanja Vidicand Rio Ferdinand, a situation made all the more precarious by long-term doubts over Gary Neville's fitness. The versatile Richards would be able to provide cover at both centre-half and right-back.

The Daily Mirror claims that Richards features on a three-man target-list along with Seville duo Luis Fabiano and Daniel Alves, while The Daily Telegraph reports: 'The ongoing uncertainty over the future of manager Sven Goran Eriksson and any likely successor at Eastlands has convinced the United manager that a bid in the region of £20 million would be accepted.'

However, Ferguson may yet have to recruit at least one new left-back this summer. Not only is Mikael Silvestre expected to leave England, but speculation is mounting over Patrice Evra's future. According to the Telegraph, 'Discussions with the club over a renewed deal, moving Evra up the pay scale at Old Trafford, as the player believes his performances merit, have hit an impasse' and the Frenchman is thought to be attracting interest from AC Milan.
Gee Wheelsy, I'm on my way to the optometrist right now because my eyes are ****ed. I can't seem to read any quotes from Sir Alex or anybody at our club. All I see is an article written in poor English, that cites a neutral newspaper, who didn't cite a source or use any quotes from anybody at our club.

But if you're correct, we're also tapping up Benzema, Santa Cruz, David Villa, Quaresma, Dani Alves, Miguel Veloso, Joao Moutinho, Robinho, Dean Ashton, Huntelaar, Luis Fabiano, Henry and Eto'o.

We're going to be hard to stop next season.

All clubs do a certain amount of tapping up and unsettling. A couple of smartly worded quotes, a rumour to the right people, etc. But Real have always been absolutely disgusting and make every other club in the world look like saints. They've stepped it up even more with Ronaldo, but they've did similar things to Kaka and many other players in the past.

One of their favourite tactics is to use Marca (well known to be the most biased footballing rag in the world) to put pictures of players photoshopped with Real Madrid jerseys on as they constantly link them and use completely made up quotes. They interviewed Ronaldo's mother and got her to hold a Real Madrid jersey with his name on it (considering she's now come out and said he should stay at Man Utd, I wouldn't be surprised if that was photoshopped and made up as well). They literally have a car waiting at the airport with his name on it. They've constantly talked about not only that he should join them, but talk about it as if it's going to happen without a doubt. All without even making an enquiry to Man Utd about it, let alone a formal bid.

They are up there with Chelsea as the most disgusting club in the world. You might say they at least have history and tradition, but it's a history of disgusting tactics and backstabbing.

Ferguson issues Ronaldo warning

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says the club would rather put Cristiano Ronaldo in the stands than sell him to Real Madrid.

Ferguson has met the Glazer family, who own the club, and said: "Their attitude is 'To hell with them'.

"They'd sit a player in the stand, I'm telling you, absolutely no doubt about it, just to prove a point."

Ronaldo has told Portuguese media he will clarify his position in "two or three days".
The 23-year-old is currently with the Portugal squad ahead of Euro 2008 after a season in which he inspired the Old Trafford club to a Premier League and Champions League double.

He has a deal with United which runs until 2012 but has so far refused to state publicly that he is to stay with the club.

Real Madrid manager Bernd Schuster has made no secret about his admiration for Ronaldo.

And United have threatened to report Real to Fifa for making their interest public.

But the Spanish outfit's president Ramon Calderon has defended their conduct, saying recently: "We know they [United] aren't a selling club. It is a problem between player and team."

Ferguson insists that the Glazers are determined to keep their prize asset, even if it means taking a tough line.

And, despite criticism of the Glazers when they took over the club in 2005, Ferguson praised them for the impact they have had at the club.
"They have been good to this club, believe me," he said. "They have been brilliant owners."

We've signed Davide Petrucci, a 16yo Italian striker who was playing for Roma. Sorry Hybrid ;) You know anything about him? Apparantly he's very highly rated, probably the Italian's top player of his age group.

We missed out on Aaron Ramsey though. He's a Utd fan and Cardiff preferred he joined us, but he decided he'd find it much easier breaking into the Arsenal midfield. Fair enough I guess, although I hope he doesn't come back to bite us on the arse.
