If the NRL rights weren't going to Nine then I'd rather them go to Ten then Seven. Ten promotes AFL way better than Seven does. Infact, Ten promotes all sports better than other channels. Even Union ffs. We'd be crazy not to give some rights to Ten.

haha ten is just smarter when it comes to sport, but apart from the AFL, seven and ten get all the major sporting events, I guess that is because ten does not have the money the other two have

Matty Johns brings back the biff to Nine

* From: The Daily Telegraph
* November 19, 2009 12:00AM

DISGRACED ex-footballer Matthew Johns is looking at a smorgasbord of programming options with Channel 7 for 2010 after turning his back on the Nine Network in the aftermath of the sex scandal that damaged his career and reputation earlier in the year.

After being suspended by Channel 9 following his admission to being involved in a 2002 group-sex scandal that rocked rugby league earlier this year - and then appearing in a difficult and humiliating interview with Nine's A Current Affair - Johns looks set to jump ship and join rival Seven Network with his new television partner and staunch backer John Singleton.

Johns this week told a Confidential source three programming concepts were on the table with Seven.

The first is believed to be a sports panel discussion program, the second a comedy sketch show in the style of The Paul Hogan Show, and the third is unknown.

It has been reported Seven hopes to schedule one of the programs on a Thursday at 8.30pm, with a view to damaging rival Nine's lead-in for The Footy Show, Johns' old stomping ground.

Seven is expected to make a bid for Nine's NRL broadcasting contract for 2012 and signing Johns is viewed as the first of many league signings it may ultimately make.

But when talk of the three programs was put to Seven boss David Leckie yesterday, he said through a spokesman: "We won't be drawn on our programming plans for 2010".

Johns this week, meanwhile was spotted looking like a damsel in distress at a Dee Why service station on Monday.

When he found his silver Lexus had a flat, rather than change it himself, he gave the white knights at the NRMA's road service division a call and they changed it for him.

Why the mention of him having a flat tyre? why even bring it up?

That article is like 500 words...it could have been summed up in like a snippit saying there are 3 shows scheduled, one to target the Footy Show and Seven are contesting for TV Rights.

The rest is a dig at league at the start, sullying Johns further at the start and the end and just a ridiculous ending to the article.

Can't expect too much from the telecrap.

Matthew Johns in TV bidding war

The Sunday Telegraph

November 29, 2009 12:00am

MATTHEW Johns has become the hottest property in television with Network Ten joining Channel Seven in a desperate race to sign him to front an NRL show.

The Sunday Telegraph has learnt Ten bosses David Mott and Nick Falloon approached Johns late last week to front a league-based program and to have a light entertainment role with the station.

Seven is also vying for Johns's signature to be the marquee star of its proposed NRL show. It is now almost certain Johns will return to television next year in direct opposition to former Channel Nine powerhouse The Footy Show, of which he was an integral member for the past five years.

Earlier this month, Johns turned his back on a $600,000-a-year contract with Nine to form a production company with John Singleton. While Seven's deal is sports-based, Ten has plans for Johns to extend his talents beyond football, looking at him to help fill a void left by Rove McManus.

Ten is anxious to establish a new variety show. Ten executives were impressed with the ratings Nine achieved with two Hey Hey It's Saturday reunions.

Seven chief David Leckie has been in extensive talks with Singleton and Johns.

Johns has emerged as a key figure in the NRL's next television rights battle. The NRL's deal with Nine and Fox Sports, valued at $500 million over six years, ends following the 2012 campaign.

Johns fell from grace earlier this year when it was revealed in a Walkley Award-winning Four Corners report he was involved in the 2002 Cronulla Sharks group-sex scandal.

how else would you describe a bloke who can't change his own tyre?

Tired?
Unwilling to be photographed trying to take a tyre off without a car jack?

Not sure if you carry a jack around with you - I don't.
If I got a flat I'd call someone with a jack to come help. I think the NRMA would be pretty high on my list unless I was close to home.

I know he was in a garage and they should have had one, but if the service part was closed or non existant, they probably wouldn't have been able to help either.

Hopefully it may mean we would get more RL shows on either 7 or 10. Given 9 have no problems promoting a code that they don't have any rights to it would be good to see 7 and/or 10 getting behind the NRL.

One thing that confuses me about all of this:

He's just not that talented.
For an ex-footballer, he's a bit of a smartarse. Compared to most footballers who get on TV, he's a cut above. But his stuff is really not that witty or funny. His singing is atrocious.

If you look at most genuine entertainers (Robin Williams, Seinfeld etc), he's D-grade at best.

So - why all the carry-on about what Johns will do next? It'll just be more simple, not-really-clever guff for very simple people.

I would suggest there are very few (if any) entertainers in Australia that are even worthy of comparison to the names you mentioned.
