The mix tape for a girl/boy thread...

OK, so I've seen High Fidelity way too many times but while people seem to be making list I figure I'd put this question to you.

If you like someone and don't know how to tell 'em you make 'em a mix tape right? Very old, trite, tacky and sentimental but love/attraction is a complicated thing. What would you put on a mix tape for a girl or guy that you like? This thread is for everyone... fire away!

Is it someone you're in love with? Someone you're just starting to be romantic with? Someone you're just interested in? All influences song choice.

I have one on the go for someone at the moment. We like each other and have done for ages. We can't seem to get anywhere evern though we both know what the real deal is. Thus I put together a tape.

It's really a hypothetical question. Pick a scenario and work around it...

Here is the songs on the disc I made for my partner when I proposed:

You Are My Joy - The Reindeer Section
My Baby Just Cares For Me - Nina Simone
Moon River - Henry Mancini
B-A-B-Y - The Brunettes
Sea Of Love - Cat Power
Your Arms Around Me - Jens Lekman
Beyond The Sea - Bobby Darin
To Build A Home - The Cinematic Orchestra
The Luckiest - Ben Folds
Beloved One - Ben Harper
Real Love - Regina Spektor (cover)
No One's Gonna Love You - Band Of Horses

(last song is obviously about unrequited love but she loves the song and the chorus is lovely)

Now obviously that is laid on thick...but hey...I was proposing...depends on what music you like I guess...most of those songs will be involved in our wedding too...

It is remarkably different to what I listen to day-to-day though...

I made a mix-tape about a year back, for no particular reason. From what I remember, it included the following songs on it:

'Every little thing she does is magic' The Police
'Recurring Dream' Crowded House
'Hannah Jane' Hootie and the Blowfish
'Untouchable' Paul Kelly & The Messengers
'Carousel' Blink 182
'Trip through your wires' U2
'What's wrong with that girl?' Rick Price
'Black steam train' The Cruel Sea

I know mixed tapes were the rage back in the 80s as a gift to give your your lover, but what would be a Naughties equivilant?

Speaking of which cleaning up the other day I found a mixed tape I made when I was 16 and going through a hard time in my life.

Modern day equivalent would be burning a CD full of music downloads. I just couldn't be bothered doing that in the past though!

No one can tell you what to put on a mix tape/cd for someone -cos theoretically, this is you expressing how well you know the other person ie. because youre assuming theyre gonna like all the songs you put on there.

That being said - all the general rules John Cusack goes over in High Fidelity are spot on.
Go back - watch the movie again, take note of the rules, then choose music YOU like, that you think she will like. That way youre expressing yourself (albeit through other peoples music).

I'm no love doctor but going by those symptoms, I'd say the perfect prescription would be a dose of:

Wilco - I'm The Man Who Loves You

Either that or 2 Live Crew- Shake That Ass B1tch
