It could be a historic night for the sport tonight....

A few experts are tipping that MMA could finally be made legal in the state of New York.

It passed through the senate a couple of days ago... Which it always does... But the main problem has been its been blocked from getting to the assembly floor.

Apparently this year is different because the numbers are out there that the Pro-MMA people have the numbers... And because the previous speaker of the assembly who was an anti-MMA guy has had to step down because he's being investigated over corruption.

The MMA bill isn't on the schedule for the last day... But apparently the fact that the numbers are out in the open means that they can push it through with some unrelated bill and not have to worry about a backlash(since the majority are in favour and the public want it badly).

An update on MMA getting legalised in NY....

MMA Bill Status Update - 6.20.15

The MMA bill wasn't addressed yesterday, but the extension of the 2015 legislative session means that it's going to happen on Tuesday, which is when the Assembly will (presumably) put the finishing touches on all the pressing issues on their agenda. Here's what we know in regards to the bill that would sanction pro MMA in New York:

Though the governor's "Big Ugly" remains an option to get the bill passed, all signs are starting to point towards the Assembly having a floor debate on the issue. Said Assembly Majority Leader Joe Morelle on Friday in regards to discussion of the bill being pushed to Tuesday: "We're right on the cusp here, so I knew I had the votes today. I talked to the speaker and he's said he's certainly willing to entertain it next week even though we're trying to close down other issues today." He also mentioned how some key supporters were absent on Friday for personal reasons, which means he wants everyone from his team ready and standing on the field for when the inevitable bench-clearing brawl breaks out.

In terms of process, bills have to pass through the various Assembly committees before they can hit the floor for a general vote, and if you look at the status of the MMA bill right now you'll see that it's been hanging out in the Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development Committee - which is chaired by Assemblywoman Margaret Markey, a staunch hater of MMA - for the entire session. A look back over the history of the various MMA bills shows that it's within the committees where they usually die. Is that a danger this session? Not at all. This bill has too much support behind it. This thing is destined for the floor, a big debate with some Assembly members saying outrageous and absurd things, and then a vote in overwhelming support of sanctioned MMA in the state.
All things are still good. We just have to wait until Tuesday.

I watched a bit of it live last night... Obviously I didn't see any debate on MMA.

However i am able to say that I watched them pass a motion to declare a state wide 'Chicken Wing Day'...

And also saw them pass a bill which now means that all elevator serviceman in New York will need to undergo licensing...

aldo v mcgregor potentially off or postponed, what a surprise.

potentially not a bad outcome for me, hopefully they replace aldo with someone that mcgregor should be fighting like mendez or edgar instead

Aldo will make it... The shit-talk he will cop from Conor will be relentless if he doesn't turn up.

Not to mention he will be giving up one of the biggest paydays in MMA history over to Frankie.

no he won't, if conor can beat edgar or mendez like you seem to think he can, the payoff will be even bigger

I have no f**king idea if he can beat Frankie or Mendez...

He's a far more appealing prospect to fans than those two so of course people want to see him fight Aldo... But I've never seen him against a wrestler before so that match up is a massive risk if he fights them.

It's not rocket science... But the UFC will be trying everything to save Aldo vs McGregor... Even if it means postponing it...

not if it means they're on the shelf for 4-6 months.

they already have enough publicity for a sellout event if someone replaces aldo. make it happen!

A fractured rib isn't 4-6 months... Your talking maybe 6-8 weeks at worst.

Moving it it August/September isn't too bad....

I'm picking they move it to UFC 191 with DC vs Gus for the LHW title in Vegas.

Unless of course Aldo is trying to angle at postponing the fight to UFC 190 which happens to be in Brazil...

and that would be wrong because?

the ufc's problem with any postponement is the 10s of thousands of irishmen that have already booked their flights and accomodation, the ufc surely aren't going to piss them off, there's no guarantee they'll be back again if they feel hard done by

It's wrong because Aldo was already criticised heavily for pulling out of a previous fight with Mendez in Vegas because of injury only for it to be postponed back to a card in Brazil.

Personally I don't think he did it on purpose... But some people think he did... So if he postponed this fight for a month and ended up on a Brazilian card it would open it all back up again...

Your right on the Irish fans too... That's the big issue for the UFC...

Maybe the UFC throws in a can for Conor to fight... So he can finish him early and can still fight Aldo in August.

It would keep the Irish fans happy.. and keep the Aldo fight safe...

are cans enough to appease fans travelling for thousands of miles? i don't think so. if it's not mendes or edgar, even lamas or faber would be happy to step up. the lower you go, the more concerning it is how much the ufc really fear connor's actual abilities are.

Yeah... That is the problem... You have to be careful who you match him with because if he loses then you lose the lightning in a bottle he has created.

Diego Sanchez at LW could be an interesting match up... Conor wouldn't need to cut to FW... And those 2 hate each other.
