Updated: Controversial UFC star Chael Sonnen retires from MMA
By Adam Ireland on June 12, 2014 13,863 reads 0

UFC middleweight and light heavyweight Chael Sonnen (28-14-1) has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts.

In the wake of his failed drug test yesterday, Sonnen was pulled from the UFC 175 fight card before going on air to tell his side of the story.
Despite plans to appeal his suspension, the three time UFC title challenger decided to call it a day on his professional fighting career this morning.
"I want to officially announce my retirement from competitive mixed martial arts," Sonnen said on UFC Tonight.
"I want to stay within the rules, and I don't fully understand them. I have to put my health first. I have to put my family first. If I know what I know now, and I know this is going to work and I'm going to be able to get my wife pregnant and look forward to having a family, I'm going to do the exact same thing 20 more times so it's going to put me out of compliance 20 more times. Let's just stop with that. Let me just remove myself," he continued.
Sonnen said that his decision to retire was largely based on prioritising his life as a family man, over professional mixed martial arts.
"There's going to be a day where I'm no longer going to have the title of fighter - that's just a reality," Sonnen said. "I don't ever there want to be a day where I'm not going to have the title of parent, father, and husband and my health has got to come first," he said.

"The American Gangster" went on to take responsibility for the TRT related issues he's faced throughout his career, referencing yesterday's failed drug test as a moment when his "damage control" mentality was not well received by MMA fans and media.
"I do want to admit fault. I want to make sure I'm taking full responsibility. Yesterday, when I came out, I was mad and I was a fighter and I went into defense mode. However, ultimately the rules are the rules. I understand that, and I'm a rules guy. I don't want to break the rules. Ultimately, it comes down to the athlete to make sure he's in compliance. That's a big list. I've studied this for three years, and I've gotten conflicting reports time and time again through studying this and through being part of it. I'm not sure today I'm any closer getting a strangehold than when I began 36 months ago. I'm doing the best I can," he said.
"I actually take responsibility," he continued.

The NCAA Division I All-American from the University of Oregon holds notable victories over "Shogun" Rua (submission - 2013), Michael Bisping (decision - 2012) and Brian Stann (submission - 2011) but is perhaps most well known for his rivalry with former middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
At UFC 117, Sonnen went within an inch of taking the title from the most dominant champion the UFC has ever seen, before "The Spider" pulled off a final round triangle arm-bar submission to hold onto the belt.
In what was the most hyped rematch in the history of the sport, Sonnen would fall to Silva once again in 2012, going down to the Brazilian via TKO in the second round at UFC 148. During his interview today, Sonnen thanked Silva for a rivalry that shaped a big part of both their careers'.
"I want to thank the single-most important opponent that I've ever had. I couldn't have gotten to where I am without this dance partner. That is of course you Anderson Silva. Thank you for the opportunity. Thank you for the memories. Thank you for the invitation to the barbecue even though I didn't take you up on it."

Sonnen was one of the most popular fighters on the UFC roster. His ability to "sell a fight" was unparallelled with the now 37 year old packaging up his WWE style antics with an uncanny and often humorous ability to get under the skin of his opponents - much to the delight of fight fans around the world.
Upon retiring from MMA, Sonnen will likely focus on his role as a UFC commentator for various FOX Sports television shows.

Machida sat back and waited to counter for the first 3 rounds. He had already lost the belt by then. Can't afford to do that...

I wonder who the poor girl will be thrown to Rousey if they do go ahead with her main eventing UFC 176.

Throw Tate in there again lol they already hate each other plus Tate is the only one that has taken her past a round. Rousey most likely beats her again but a 2 or 3 round fight against Tate is better then a 1 minute fight agaist some random

I can see it getting to a stage where she will have to met cyborg at a catch weight of 140. As there will be no one left to fight and the question will continue to follow her around as to whether she can beat cyborg.

Not until cyborg stops taking steroids.

Gina Carano would be a more likely catch weight fight as she's more popular to the mainstream than Cy-Roids.

BJ earned the right to one more fight.

He wanted to know if he could still hang with the top level guys.

He couldn't... He retired

Very sad way for one the greatest to go out...

Cyborg has been done for roids yes but so have a lot of fighters. As for Carano to me it's a stupid match up, put possibly the best female fighter in the world up against an actor that hasn't fought in years, we all know how it would finish. I can't see Dana allowing Cyborg to fight Ronda for fear of her getting her head punched in.

The problem with Cy-Roid is that she looks like a man...

So the fact that she's been caught juicing up to the gills takes away her credibility.

I think Rousey destroys Carano also... But that match up will be about making use of there mainstream profile.

Cy-Roid is too much risk for the UFC... She could destroy the golden goose Rhonda... And then what?? She's too big to make the UFCs woman's divisions... And then there's the high risk of her testing positive for steroids again.

Either that or she gets disqualified when her penis pops out if her fight trunks mid fight.

I agree she is to risky as IMO she will smash Honda and then pack up her stuff and head back to fighting at 145 leaving Dana without the "unbeatable" Rousey. But I just want to see her get smashed lol maybe Cyborg can punch a little bit of respect into her. But it's all a mute point as Cyborg and Honda will probably never fight.

The thing for the UFC is... They don't need Cy-Roid...

Rhonda is one of the most popular stars in MMA... Across the board.

They just keep feeding her these girls and let the UFC hype machine do it's work.

Cy-Roid will just continue to sit in obscurity for the rest of her career until she finally kills herself from roid rage.

The UFC thrived without Fedor... So not having Cy-Roid won't be an issue.

Yep that pretty much how I see it going down also which is unfortunate. Hearing some good things about Holly Holm also as a potential challenger but money seems a big issue also. From what I hear she would destroy Honda on the feet as she is a pro boxer but if Honda gets hands on her it's all over as she has a below average ground game.

BJ's been done for his last 3 fights. He should have retired after the fight against Diaz. He just wanted a pay cheque. Plain and simple.

That's pretty harsh...

Dropping 2 weight classes to fight a stud like Frankie in his prime made it pretty bloody obvious it wasn't about the pay cheque.

The prevailing thoughts were that the Diaz and McDonald loses were due to him being physically outmatched at welterweight.

So there was a school of thought that BJ could make one more run at LW where he wouldn't be overwhelmed by these physically stronger guys at WW.

His only recent losses at LW were to Edgar so he quite rightly asked to fight Frankie... He's certainly found out he can't hang with them anymore.

If it was truly for the pay cheque he could have stayed at WW or LW and fought a far easier guy.

But even if it was for the pay cheque...

When your one of the main reasons we have thriving weight divisions below welterweight, you earn the right for Dana to give you the benefit of the doubt when you knock on his door and tell him you might still have some fire left in the belly.

None of this changes the fact that IMO(and it's only my opinion)... He's the greatest fighter of them all.

And was probably the last of the true fighters left in the UFC.
