Some "Best of's" are pretty good such as the REM one.

well bands like REM, Blondie and David Bowie tend to release best offs every bloody year!!

Isn't funny how best offs mysteriously appear around this time of the year!! ...call me a cynic, but record companies tend to get a little "Best off Happy" before christmas.

I also found it disgusting what Sony did to Silverchair a few years back.

Best of... albums are released by bands who are far past writing any decent material, yet don't know how to retire and fade out of the spotlight gracefully.

The Placebo Singles collection isn't half bad! I was looking at the DVD of it this morning and there is a full doco, live performances and some other very good stuff on there besides the music videos...

Not all bands are done when they bring out a Best Of.. collection...

some cases that is correct.

however, I believe REM and Nick Cave and the bad seeds are still releasing damn fine studio albums well past their Best offs released. Even though REM do have about three of them in their back catalogue.
