Yeah Unit I'd have to disagree with you there dude, imo a 'classic' album is one in which pretty much every song is a winner.

For me at the moment it is Evanescence album, i think they could realease every song and get a hit out of it.

I dont think that Metallica's black Album or GnR appetite for destruction were defining or classic albums, both had a defining and classic song ont hem in Enter Sandman and Sweet Child of mine but thats about it.

Oh yup,and we all know how much Evanescence has defined rock for years  There basically Linkin Park with a female singer
Welcome To The Jungle
It's So Easy
Nightrain
Out Ta Get Me
Mr. Browstone
Paradise City
My Michelle
Think About You
Sweet Child O' Mine
You're Crazy
Anything Goes
Rocket Queen
and it isnt classic?Whaaaaaaaaaat? :? Albums just don't get any bigger than this. Ever. This was the defining album of an era. It was the peak performance of the LA glam rock scene. It was never bettered by this band nor any other from that scene.
And for the record Metallica's self-titled is shite.

The defining album of the era? Glam rock scene? i have never classified them as glam rock but if you want to put them in that catergory i would say albums like Slippery when wet and Hysteria were more defining and probably sold more to (without any facts to back that up just my opinion of course).

Personally i think Metallica's And Justice for All was probably better then Appetite for destruction and from memory they would have come out at similar times.

As for Evenescence, when i heard their first couple of songs i thought the same connection with Linkin park, after hearing the whole album a few times i realised they are much better, and at the end of the day clearly have their own sound.

Master of Puppets would be Metallica's defining album, probably closely followed by And Justice For All.

On an entirely different note.. got my iPod this morning - so excited! :D

Ask the average Joe on the street who Poison & Def Pofters are.You miiiiiight get a answer from two or three people.Guns N Roses influenced & defined Rock in the 80's & Iron Maiden influenced & defined metal in the 80's.

I would agree with you if you could hear the bass. But how many 'hit singles' did that albulm have?Only one.Metal doesnt sell well,it never has and never will ;-) MOP along with Slayer's Reign in Blood was more influential to the Thrash scene & It helped spawned Death metal to some extent.

I think the Average Joe would have plenty of knowlege of Def Leppard and Bon Jovi. Guns and roses defined next to nothing. Outside of Appetite for destruction their albums were very ordinary. Spaghetti incident, and either of the use your illusions illustrate that point. I think bands that have continuously produced good records would define more then GnR did. It was unfortunate that they were in self destruct mode as often as they were cause they could have been truly a great long standing band Like Metallica became. I guess you could put others like Motley Crue and Megadeath in their, Mustain had a gift but his drug habbit killed any hope of major success, luckily Metallica parted ways with him early.

AJFA only had one single you heard about because they only released one, up till that point Metallica had not actually done any music videos.
It wasa pity the tour that Metallica GnR and Faith no More did around the states didn't come to Australia (despite the problems they had right from the beggining), would have been an awesome concert.

True-Guns N Roses only released one truely good albulm but it still became a stepping stool for the next generation of rock/metal bands.Use your illusions 1 and 2 still sold well though.I guess Guns N Roses demise was caused by there f**kwit singer, had he stayed off the drugs and booze who knows how many more great albulms Gunners would of released.Mustaine still wrote some riffs and solos in Ride The Lightning as well as Kill Em all along with Exodus guitarists Tom Hunting.
I saw Metallica live in Wellington for the Re-Load tour,Pretty good show apart from the Load songs and the terrible Enter Fn Sandman

I dont think that slash and Duff were the cleanest living people either and would probably helped in their own demise. Apparently GnR had reformed with Axel being the only surviving original member.. any one know any news on that?

A New GNR albulm Chinese Democrasy was suppose to be released 2 years ago, then 1 year ago then 6 months ago and they played one gig in england then Axl threw a hissy and pulled out of another concert but i dont what the bands line up is now.
I think it's safe to asume they wont be releasing anything new for some time.

They had some guy playing guitar who wore a bucket on his head and was called bucket head ... i never figutred out if that was for real or not given that it is Axel we are talking about...

Would you call a bands career great if they only have one good album? Dont get me wrong i loved appetite for destruction but i dont think it "all that".. i also dont think GnR were that good personally.. but i must confess i am a huge metallica fan so wa probably a bit biased in those late 80's when it seemd to be you were a massive Metallica fan or a GnR fan.. not both, thats how it was where i was growing up in those days. Then of course you had those that hated both and loved bands like Kreator and Slayer...
I had a soft spot for Anthrax though as well.

Yup, Buckethead had his own band called uhh...Buckethead :s can’t say I know a hell of alot about him to be honost.
I don’t think Guns N Roses were great but 'Appetite' was still one of the biggest rock albums of all time and regardless of whether you dig them or not they did influence a whole new generation of rock fans. Not many bands have several hits still playing on mainstream radio after 15 years. Metallica defined & influenced a whole genre of metal but after 4 dud albums in a row I think everybody’s waiting for them hang up there guitars and call it a day. I personally love the hair/glam rock stuff(Dokken, twisted sister, Europe just to name a few favorites) as well as the more extreme side of side of brutal music ,I never saw the point of taking 'sides' when it came to Metal. Who says Death metal fans & old 80's thrash fans can’t get along?
