The Official Dylan Brown thread

Thats why our club needs to become something. We are just a club exactly the same as the other 15. Though some of the clubs are about something....Brisbane are the brisbane club play in front of 40k get away with what ever you like etc. Melbourne are the winning club, Roosters are something but I cant work out what. We are just one of nine sydney clubs. Essentially if I was Brown I'd be looking around as well.
We have no identity at all.
We could become: the smart club, the educated club (you have to be enrolled at uni), the entertainers, the elite club (well dress, well spoken, in vogue magazine), the multi cultural club....
I was hoping we were going to hold off on a jersey sponsor until something classy came along but we always end up with a 2bit developer.

Another good comment. When Parramatta first came into the competition in 1947, they were known as 'The Cherry-Pickers' because there were a lot of fruit orchards around Parramatta at that time. Don't know what their identity was beyond that. Most, if not all, Sydney clubs were representative of the working class and were 'battlers'. I suppose in those days Parramatta was 'way out west, so we were probably almost seen as a country team. Possibly a bunch of hicks.

Then came the sixties, and Parramatta were 'The Millionaires', believe it or not. We were the richest club in Sydney. Also for a period of the sixties we were known as 'The Easybeats' (for obvious reasons). So our identity during the sixties was that of very wealthy under-achievers. In fact, you could say that, for the first thirty years of our existence, right up until the late seventies, Parramatta were losers and under-achievers. And for a good number of those years I think we were looked upon as pretty much of a basket case. That was our identity - despite having a good smattering of representative players in our ranks over the years.

Then, between about 1975 til about 1980, we became renowned for our toughness and resilience and no-frills, never-say-die attitude under coaches like Ian Walsh and Norm Provan. And we started winning. We were battlers. We played a no-nonsense brand of football and were seen as honest toilers who deserved the success we achieved. We were 'the good guys' and were probably the most popular team in the competition.
Then came the 80's - and we were suddenly the super team with the super coach. But we were still the 'good guys'. No longer the battlers (that title went to Western Suburbs - and to a lesser extent, Newtown and Norths.

Then, of course, as the eighties ended, we became under-achievers again. We've been pretty much under-achievers for most of the last thirty years. At times we've been a basket case again; riddled with factional in-fighting, poor recruitment/retention, and a succession of coaches hired and fired in desperation. 'Poor old Parramatta' seems to have been our identity for most of the last thirty years. In fact you could probably say that Parramatta have been incredible under-achievers for about 45 of the seventy odd years of our existence. We've only really had a ten year period from around 1976 to 1986 where we really shone as a club. And some of the Smith years, of course. We are possibly the least successful club in the history of the game. That, I'm afraid, has been our identity for a large part of our existence.

So, what does Parramatta stand for, now? Mediocrity? Unable to compete with the big boys when it comes to TPA's, buying star players, getting the top-line coaches; unable to be competitive from one year to the next? (And the ultimate humility of being caught cheating the salary cap, but still having no real on-field success.) We aren't the good guys anymore - we're the stupid guys.

I don't know what Parramatta is going to stand for going into the future. I've been lucky enough to live through some of the years when to be a Parra fan actually meant something - integrity, honesty, hard work, flair, flamboyance, etc, etc, etc.
I hope we get there again.

Bar a 10 year period from 76-86 this club has been a mediocre embarrassing joke.

Just imagine if Big Jack has never came here?? We’s Still be waiting to open our account.

Well, we did have some good years under Smith. And we had some decent years prior to Gibson coming, so we may have jagged a premiership. (And we so very nearly won in '76, '77.)
But I get your point. Maybe that's been part of the attraction of following Parramatta (not the embarrassing joke part), but the perennial underdogs/underachievers who every now and then give their fans a massive thrill (like '09 for example).

It is quite reassuring to read such a post composed of reality as opposed to all the other shite that is posted here.
Excellent summation there Lingard.

It is the only benefit of being losers for so long.
When we actually win something, the feeling is incredible. (1981)
Sad thing is, there are so many fans who have never experienced that elation.
Hopefully, when it does happen, and it becomes a reasonably regular occurrence, we will have a massive new generation of fans.

It has been appalling that a club like ours has for so long not had the administration to take advantage of our enormous potential.
We should be Bronco's like, yet we can barely claim to be better than the Titans.
It's been embarrassing for too long.

Agreed as usual mate, I was a young punk and barely remember us winning those comps. And to be fair after 86 I never really appreciated it like I should of because I thought we win these comps every year or so. Boy was I wrong, but I’m stuck with these merkins for life good or bad.

Agreed, but he’ll be labeled an angry old whinger by some.

Well it's not far off the mark. Certainly there is a remarkable lack of understanding involved, although whinging might not be the right word. Things change. And we know that many of the older generation simply cannot handle that, in various ways.

Ultimately our success in the eighties has no bearing on 2019...once again, things change. The game has changed on and off the field so much that it's almost unrecognisable compared to what was going on in the eighties. No club is successful forever, and in the modern game, it's much harder to win a premiership even when you are successful.

Actually, I take that back. If anything the eighties has, ultimately, had a negative net effect on our club. Because the eighties gave us Fitzy, and he has been a leading cause of much of the factionalism that has been the major reason we've found ourselves where we have in the past 10-15 years.

No club "stands" for anything at the end of the day. It's a silly comment from T-Boon that people have tried to make meaningful.

We somehow managed to get a great new stadium built here while every other club is basically falling over themselves and their crap old venue. I don't know how much credit we get if any for that but it is something.
We still have a great city.
We are a multicultural city with a great Indian community and Chinese community and we do practically nothing to include them in what we do. Indians and Chinese are smart as hell and they work their backsides off. We should tap into that (not their backsides). As a club we seem to be catering more to bludgers.

The Parra brand should be a lot bigger than the Aland brand. But Aland is literally three times the size of our badge on the jersey and it makes us look like grubby mercenary beggars. I would sack Aland instantly.
We should try to get the NRL headquarters relocated to Parramatta.
We should get political and intelligent.
Lets try to be the best spoken club in the NRL, then in Australian sport.

FFS!!! It’s all those successful merkins from the 80’s fault, how dare they make the clowns in charge of the last decade look like clueless rank amateurs they are. Fancy them building a legacy that has been absolutely squandered the last 30 odd years............

And I hear what you are saying Baz but I just wanted to twist your nipples a touch.
