The Official Dylan Brown thread

Sounds like Sterlo wasn’t particularly impressed with Brown’s comments earlier in the week either.

Eels legend Peter Sterling has voiced his distaste over Dylan Brown’s comments regarding his next rugby league contract talks.
During the week, Brown told reported he will “go fishing” and listen to offers from other clubs when he becomes a free agent as of November 1, which Sterling took exception to.

“The last thing we should be talking about now is money,” Sterling told Triple M.

“He had a really good debut last week and the club have looked after him.

“I would like to think that those sorts of conversations would come a little further down the track.

Blake Austin was an established first grader when he decided to take this stance.”

Brown is one game into what will potentially be a glittering rugby league career, with reports suggesting he is set to earn in excess of $3 million when he negotiates his next contract.

Brown is signed until the end of 2020, but is free to negotiate at the end of this season, however Sterling felt he was wrong to publicly voice his plans in the manner he did so early into his first grade career.

I understand the nature of the beast and how it’s a business but I was still disappointed,” Sterling said.

“Having said that if you are asked a question you answer it and that is obviously what Dylan did.

“I didn’t like the fishing component that was mentioned in there.

“But I would like to think when the time comes to be making decisions that he will consider where he got a start and who has been looking after him the last couple of years, but I do have a vested interest obviously.”

All the more reason the crucify the little turd when he eventually has a bad game.
Maybe Drown is trying to help us out telling all clubs “legit put aside $1m a season for 2021 and I’m there” but really he’s staying and f**king up other teams recruitment in the process. Seems the most plausible/palatable to me

Sterlo took the TV money instead of ever helping the Eels out after we made him, so what is he going on about the dumb turd.

We somehow managed to get a great new stadium built here while every other club is basically falling over themselves and their crap old venue. I don't know how much credit we get if any for that but it is something.
We still have a great city.
We are a multicultural city with a great Indian community and Chinese community and we do practically nothing to include them in what we do. Indians and Chinese are smart as hell and they work their backsides off. We should tap into that (not their backsides). As a club we seem to be catering more to bludgers.

The Parra brand should be a lot bigger than the Aland brand. But Aland is literally three times the size of our badge on the jersey and it makes us look like grubby mercenary beggars. I would sack Aland instantly.
We should try to get the NRL headquarters relocated to Parramatta.
We should get political and intelligent.
Lets try to be the best spoken club in the NRL, then in Australian sport.

It's true. When I visit Parramatta these days, I'm struck by the numbers of Indian and Chinese people in the streets. That's neither a bad nor a good thing, but vastly different from when I lived in Parra for over 30 years. And yet, when I watch a game on television I don't see that same representation of Indian and Chinese fans in the crowd. Why not? And certainly, I don't think we've ever had a Chinese or Indian player (that may take some time.) I agree that we need to tap into the multi-cultural population in Parramatta. Canterbury have done it. Canterbury's identity is 'the family club', the club that is inclusive of its Lebanese and Muslim population. The club that has a history as the entertainers and the Dogs of War. They actually do have an identity. What's ours going to be? It's a great and important discussion, T-Boon.

The Lebanese embraced rugby league easily, as fans of multiple clubs. Plenty of lebanese follow Parra. I don't think it's the responsibility of the clubs or the NRL so much. I think rugby league fits Arab culture whereas it really doesn't fit Chinese or Indian. It's all about culture.

Plenty of social-climbing lefty bogans reject rugby league as part of their attempt to fit in with their betters. The same types of people who complain about their parents and grandparents being bigots.

Yes, you make a good point. In fact, it could be the whole answer to the question. But the NRL has taken upon itself the responsibility of 'selling' and marketing rugby league as widely as it can. If it's at all possible, it would be great to 'sell' the game to as many Chinese and Indians in Parramatta as we can. As Bazal points out, things change, times change; and we now have a large Indian and Chinese population. Why not try to incorporate that into future plans?

Well I'm sure we're trying, and why wouldn't we? Money talks. From the game's point of view we should be aiming at the lowest common denominator, which includes sizeable ethnic minorities, as well as mums deciding which sport little Jaidynn should be playing. That will obviously alienate some groups, including bring-back-the-biff diehards, and rich Chinese who are forced to watch their boys play rugby for Kings School's J grade side on Saturday mornings.

We should have a Chineels membership.

Not sure there's much point appealing to the Indian crowd, at least not in large numbers. Obviously some individual people will follow RL

You only have to look at the sporting landscape in India. It's cricket and then pretty much nothing. Even soccer, the most popular game in the world, barely registers relative to the size of the population. I couldn't tell you why but it just seems that, apart from cricket, Indian fans aren't really that big on sport.

Just because the market is there doesn't mean it's necessarily smart to spend time and money targeting it.

We should try.
