That 2010 series I have never watched any highlights of. It was like watching Qld play a warm-up game against some residents team. The only highlight was somebody (a Tigers player IIRC) causing a stink late in Game 3 and his jersey ripping.
That was Michael Ennis. We had the lead with 10 to go then Ennis gives away a stupid penalty with the Maroons in attack. Slater scores and the Maroons win 3-0. Ennis was a good club player but a terrible rep one.

The issue Bellamy had was juggling club and representative duties. He didn't have the time and the passion required to succeed at that level and he relied too much on the Blues staff. The role really requires dedication to help foster a team environment and have a vision not only for the upcoming game for the series and the next series after that.

It just seemed like Bellamy would pitch to have a couple of his Storm players picked and would do his best with a hodge podge of a team. Bozo would have his say, Loz would add his 2c but really it was the Daily Telegraph that had the biggest say.

There was so much chopping and changing, but there were also some baffling omissions. Manly were the best team in Sydney when Craig took over but for whatever reason Matt Orford could not get a look into the team. Not only had Orford been one of the best 7s in the competition for a number of years, he had played under Bellamy so if there was any player who could excel in a short amount of time it was him.

Watmough was another Manly player who should have been one of the first players picked in 2008. Strangely he was omitted and they came up with inspiring selections like Anthony Laffranchi off the bench. Laffranchi was a quality player, but that was a bad role for him to find himself in.

Or the time they picked Kurt Gidley to captain from the bench...

I think part of the Broncos problems come back to recruitment and junior development. When the Broncos were at their peak in the 1990s and 2000s they had Cyril Connell as their Recruitment Manager. Now whilst many clubs scout Qld extensively, Connell had an advantage as, having previously worked in the Qld Department of Education, he had contacts at just about every public school in Queensland which gave him early knowledge of any decent prospects coming through. I mean this guy alone discovered Shane Webcke, Tonie Carroll, Petero Civoniceva, Darren Lockyer, Wendell Sailor, Lote Tuqiri, Shaun Berrigan, Brent Tate and Karmichael Hunt, for the Broncos.

Since he left the club and his passing in 2009, that talent identification and recruitment has been far less notable for the Broncos. Sure they have had some players come through the ranks but compare guys like Haas, TPJ, Flegler, Dearden and Fifita (even though he has left) with the guys O'Connell discovered is like comparing diamonds with quartz.

I feels all a bit hard for Kev. As if telling them to care will make it happen. They're losers you cannot yell that away.

Exactly right and the decision to put the captaincy on Kurt highlighted the NSWRL inability to think long term. Everybody knew that Bedsy was walking away from the NRL after 2008 so the thought of who takes over should have been on the minds of the selectors. They should have included more senior players who enjoyed success for NSW like O'Meley, Hindmarsh etc. along with those Manly players I highlighted.

Picking a bench utility who's biggest achievement in a Blues jersey was getting them to a hot start in the 08 decider was clearly not the right way to go.

He probably just wanted to finish off those little merkins as quickly as possible so he could walk down to the Normanby and smash a few pots with Third Man Thaiday.

And then kick on at Love & Rockets afterwards. Though of course Kevin will be intoxicated and claim he didn't know what type of establishment he'd walked into...

Despite generally hating Queenslanders, Broncos players, and especially Broncos Queenslanders, I've always liked Kev. He seems like a decent footy loving bloke. But he is in over his head as a head coach. He'd be a good passionate assistant under a technically knowledgeable head coach, but the top job is beyond him.

Hopefully he's a better coach than commentator.

His understanding of the game wouldn't fill me with optimism.
