The Return of Gasnier?

The Dragons have been better off since he left. When he was there a few years ago they tried to direct all their play to him and it didn't work. Now they've got a balanced team, I wouldn't be too fussed on signing him if I was a Dragons fan, so I don't think they should be too disappointed if they miss out on him.

We've been better off mainly due to the changes in the coaching staff. I think it's true there was this "give it to Gaz" thing going on a few years ago (worked quite a lot too by the way) but it will be different this time around. Gasnier will slot right into our well balanced team, Bennett will make sure of that.

Believe me, the return of Gasnier will be very very good for the team's chances this year. Hell, maybe we won't be labelled as boring in attack anymore either, with what should be a potent attack on both sides of the field. Oh wait..... some things never change do they.

Yeah. I agree with you. Thats my concern and I'm quite happy with our lot as it is. But as also mentioned, the change in staff will have an impact on his game. He'll learn stuff he never has before and he'd probably get the ball in a bit of space, rather than off a flat Barrett pass or Matthew Head chip or scooting from dummy half.

I'll believe it when I see it.

There was never a problem with Gasnier's technique or strngth in defence. It was his poor decision making &/or lack of faith in his winger.

Dragons excellent slide defence is due to the faith they show in each other, never dropping off their marked man.

Bennett will sort his defence out IF he is returning.

With our new found structure I see no reason why gaz wouldn't flourish. After all he has had a very well paid vacation in france. He'll be refreshed that's for sure.

If the dragons put Gaz in the 2nd tier on 50k and then pay him $900,000 in the following two years, how is that anything but a deal deliberatly designed to exploit salary cap rules.

I would love to see old man Johnsy's reaction if the Broncos proposed a similar deal for anyone. He would be making 300 posts in 9 different threads about how wrong it is.

Costigan got booted from Brisbane.
Weyman smashed Daniel Conn's face into oblivion and had quiet the judiciary record relative to his time in the game.
Soward - having it and being able to use it are two different things, I doubt Fittler would have been able to coax much performance out of him, Brownie > coach than Fittler and couldn't do it.

So what if he got booted from Brisbane. Does that mean that Saints turned him from rags to riches?

He was rookie of the year in 2004 buddy. Take a look at the list of rookies of the years at the Broncos in past years, and basically all of them have gone on to play reps apart from Leon Bott.

What are you going to try and claim a rags to riches story on Jeremy Smith next as well?

well what do you want us to do, he is a local junior who was from what i understand pushed out of the game due to issues with 3rd party payments or something like that. There is what 3 teams who have the cap space to afford him. Why cant the other 13 teams have a chance at him. Especially considering he is a free agent who is available a quarter of the way through the season. If the Dragons stay within the cap then whats the issue?

i don't really see anything wrong with Gaz going to the dragons as the rules currently stands, the choice is purely his.

i do think it is an area of the cap that should be looked that, though... and there should only be a certain percentage of a players income that can be backloaded (i.e you can't have a certain percentage discrepancy between their highest paid year and lowest paid year), or something of that nature. if the cap is there to level the playing talent, then i think this is something that should definitely be looked at. i'm all for backloading and frontloading contracts, but not to this extreme. at the moment it is perfectly legal, so besides being disappointed at missing an opportunity to sign a class player (as a knights fan)... i can't see a problem with it if Gaz agrees to terms.

Finally the media are beginning to highlight that the Dragons have no hope of fitting him under their salary cap and they can't put him in as a $50K 2nd Tier player. He might very well be heading up the freeway after all...

The fact that he's a local junior is totally irrelevant. And don't make excuses for him. Just like any bloke who's left league he left of his own accord for more money. Not that theres anything wrong with that at all, but claiming hes a victim who was 'pushed out' is crap.

The Dragons should sign him for next year at his market value if they can afford to do so.

Spending up to the cap, and then signing mark gasnier outside the top 25 squad in the 2nd tier, designed for non professional players who still work jobs is a complete rort plain and simple.

I mean its all like, yeah its fair game since im a dragons fan, but your reaction if any other club tried to pull it off would be of complete uproar.

Its like when Ben Kennedy signed on Manly for $1. Its a non arms length deal designed to bend the rules.

So are low doc loans to self employed people and family trusts but as long as it is within the rules of the salary cap the Dragons can do what they like.:D

Because it wont be breaching the salary cap. The Dragons will be forced to let players go in 2011 and 2012 to accomodate Gasnier's salary. Undoutedly the Dogs, and other such poaching clubs, will be salivating at the prospect of getting our juniors - which is precisely what the salary cap is designed to do. It's a gamble to try to secure a title in 2010 or 2011 that may backfire.

The issue here is, he would provide us with the X factor we so sorely need.

But I too will believe it when I see it.

Fair point, we are cheating because if he signs with us and we back end his deal. I will be the 1st time a deal/contract has been back ended. Afterall when Locky took a significant paycut to stay at brisbane that's different right? Afterall Lock only wants players to e paid their market value each year of their contrat, typical farkin hypocrite.

Its convenient that Lockyer speaks out now, when, in an amazing coincidence, Brisbane have room under the cap.

And why the f**k is he complaing about anything being unfair anyway - don't the names Folau & Inglis spark the hypocrit thought in Lockyers balding head?

f**k off gimp.

Didnt expect much better from you but he was actually a real estate agent (not to mention in his early 30's) when he came back.

He was never a professional, and was a fill in.

And i dont remember the bit where he was backended on a million dollar contract either after playing 1 year outside the top 25.

But as i said, i didn't expect much from you.

But anyway, all this salary cap talk is getting away from the real issue. Gasnier or not i don't think anybody expects anything from the Dragons in this years final series. I mean they showed us how ready they were for finals football with their valiant efforts last year.
