The sequel disease

Why can't movie studios come up with new, original ideas these days? I was looking over what Hoyts deem to be the "Big 10" movies to be released this year, and check out the list:

Oceans 13
Spiderman 3
Shrek the Third
Pirates of the Caribbean 3
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Die Hard 4.0
Harry Potter 5
The Bourne Ultimatum

Then have a look at other movies released/scheduled for release this year:

Are We Done Yet?
28 Weeks Later
Hostel: Part II
Evan Almighty
Rush Hour 3
Daddy Day Camp
Mr Bean's Holiday
Resident Evil: Extinction
Saw IV
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Alien vs Predator: AVP2

I mean, were the originals that good that they needed to be remade or added to? I'm particularly looking at family and horror movies here, such as Are We There Yet?, Daddy Day Care and Alien vs Predator. As well as that, some of these are comebacks for franchises that have had their day, such as Die Hard and Rush Hour. Come up with something original!

To be fair Pirates of the Carribean was always going to be a trilogy. I think Oceans 13 better rock, cos 12 sucked. That said the only ones i'm looking forward to out of that lot are Die Hard 4 and 28 weeks later.

Yeah I understand that, and I know there was always going to be 7 Harry Potter movies. Same with the Bourne Ultimatum really... once they decided to make one of the books (Bourne Identity, obviously) and it went well, they were always going to make all 3.

Pirates of the Caribbean never needed to be a trilogy though. It was great as a stand-alone movie. As for the others... *sigh*

New rule, I'll call it the Oceans 12/Italian Job II rule:
No doing sequels to remakes, especially when the original did not have nor need a sequel.

Some of the movies are about "franchising" (i.e. cashing up on a successful series of movies, like Die Hard), which would explain sequels. It may be lazy, but as long as its making money, they'll keep doing it.
