The switch hit

Personally I hate it and it should be outlawed but i ask these questions from the perspective of a left hander switching to right handed -

If it pitches out side leg stump to the left hander but hits the pads as he switched to right handed has it pitched in line?

If the balls pitches outside of leg stump to as the left hander has switched to right handed is it a wide?

The ICC need to get on to this. I was under the impression if a bowler were to bowl with the opposite hand he had to notify the umpire who notified the batsman.

I'm against it. The bowler is bowling to his to his field and all of a sudden he's bowling to a left hander.

They specified the rules for it, forgot what it was. For me if they are playing it then anything goes, so forgot pitching in line, if it is going to hit the stumps then that is out. And forget wides unless it is off the pitch.

it used to be a favourite shot of Kevin Pietersen. I agree that it does not have a place in real cricket, but it's fine in T20s

This is how I see it (and I'd like to hear your feedback on this):

IF the ICC is going to give permission for a left-hander to change to a right-hander and vice versa, then it is ONLY FAIR for them to change the LBW rules for that delivery. For example, if the off-spinner Ravi Ashwin was bowling to Dave Warner over the wicket, then Dave Warner cannot be given out LBW to any ball that pitches outside leg stump (according to the rule book). However, if Warner changes to right-hand batting grip, misses it, pitches outside leg stump but hits him on the pad in line with the stumps and will hit the stumps, he should be given out LBW (if you know what I mean). The "pitching outside of leg stump" shouldn't apply because if he changes to a right-hand grip, his "new" leg stump has become his previous off stump and should be adjudicated on according to this.

Similarly, the wide ruling will also change as well. For ODIs, any ball down leg side is a wide but using the previous example, if Warner tried to change to right hand grip and he missed it down the left handed batsman's leg side, it shouldn't be a wide like it normally would if he was batting as a left hand

I'd go as far and say that hitting in line no longer matters either.

Completely agree though. If they allow it which aussies1st has said they've amended the rules then the LBW and wide rules must be adjusted.

its a terrible shot and says something about the arrogance and lackadaisical attitude of warner who should have been buckling down getting us in a position to win like wade did

the LBW applies to the batsman's natural stance, we did this a few years ago

I hate it but its got a place in T/20 I guess but I really dont like T/20 that much anyway

terrible shot, in my opinion it is a form of cheating, the bowler is not able to change his line or field during the course of a ball, but it is alright for a batsmen to change his. I don't so much mind it in 20/20 as it is an entertainig shot and that is what that form of cricket is about. The moment it gets used in Test cricket i will be really angry and demand that it gets outlawed but i think because 20/20 criket is all about the entertainment purposes i can see a case that it should be allowed

If i was on the rules committee, I'd completely scrap the "hitting in line" and "pitching outside leg stump" criteria for an LBW. If it hits your pad and it would've hit the stumps, you're out - simple as that. I think those two criteria just makes the LBW more complex and result in heated debates by commentators such as "did the ball hit in line?" etc. It'd stop batsmen from padding good balls away and make them play at the ball with the bat. I don't understand why there's two different rules for "hitting in line" - they never use it when a batsman offers a shot, but when he does they ask "did it hit in line"..... doesn't make sense. That's why I said: if the ball is hitting the stumps and the pad is the only thing that is impeding it from hitting the stumps, you're out.

I have no problem with it in T20 as one of the key draws of T20 is seeing batsmen improvise while they're batting, playing unconventional shots that they wouldn't play in other forms of the game and basically showing what they can do, if they can play it then let them. I would outlaw it in Test cricket though (although few would be stupid enough to play the shot in that form) and I am still on the fence with ODI cricket.

As far as LBWs go for it, surely the stance they start in determines leg and off stump.

That's total bullshit because they've changed their stance - particularly left handers facing right arm bowlers it's difficult to get an LBW because of where it pitches - so they should then be able to be judged LBW as a right hander.

That's a fair point, didn't think of it that way. My thought process was based on the fact that if a right armer bowls to a right handed batsman, the batsman can switch around and anything that the bowler is landing outside off is now outside leg and the batsman can no longer get out LBW from that delivery, even if it is how the bowler was planning on getting him out.

Who cares, this is a nothing topic. If the batsman is good enough to get his timing right and pull it off then good on him. The bowlers will just have to learn to bowl to a potential switch hitter. And I am sure the 60,000 fans watching at ANZ enjoyed it. This style of play is the future of cricket so you better get used to it.

Arrogant? It's a trademark Warner shot in T20's, he played it throughout the champions league, and if anyone saw the champions league they would've seen Warner destroy the best T20 bowlers in the world. Besides I'd much rather a quick fire 20 or 30 anyday as opposed to the shit Bailey served up at the end

I'm of the same opinion, I mean it's a quite low percentage shot and if a batsman can pull it off then good on them.
