AFL mulls new TV-like service

Date

August 20, 2012

Lucy Battersby

THE AFL could be the first major Australian sporting body to sell footage of matches directly to fans via high-speed broadband after its chief executive hinted that talks between the sport and the NBN had already begun.

A new distribution system that uses multicasting technology will begin next month on the national broadband network, according to NBN Co's head of product development and industry relations, Jim Hassell.

The new television-like service will pave the way for new entrants to rival pay TV, free to air and video-on-demand services such as ABC's iView.

On Friday, Andrew Demetriou told The Age that his chief operating officer, Gill McLachlan, ''may'' have already held discussions about the new multicasting technology with officials from NBN Co.

A spokesman for the AFL did not deny it had spoken to NBN Co, but refused to discuss the matter. However, the football code has already shown its interest in the NBN's capacity to fundamentally reconfigure the economics of sport and traditional media.

In 2011 Demetriou told academic website The Conversation the AFL ''may decide with the advent of the NBN to sell direct to the consumer. We might control our content more … and not deal with as many third parties.''

Last year, the AFL set up its own media unit, which now has 105 staff, including 22 journalists, that distribute print and digital content directly to fans.

It is in the first year of a $1.2 billion, four-year exclusive rights deal. The Seven network is paying about $475 million for free-to-air television rights, Foxtel about $625 million for pay TV rights and Telstra an estimated $153 million for fixed and mobile internet rights.

A spokesman for the National Rugby League, which is finalising a new rights deal, said it had not met NBN Co to discuss multicasting at this stage.

The director of policy and corporate affairs at Foxtel, Bruce Meagher, said he expected major sports groups to keep selling broadcast rights.

''Why would someone who is a sports body suddenly want to turn themselves into a media company? You would have to seriously question whether it is a smart move,'' Mr Meagher said.

''That has been speculated on a lot. Nobody has actually done it yet anywhere in the world. There would be a very, very difficult transition to get over in order to achieve that … We will absolutely look to exclusive [sport] deals where we can and that is an area where we can use our size and creative abilities to create distinctive products.''

However, multicasting could sprout new niche markets for sports and cultural events that are not screened today. The Australian Ballet confirmed last week it was looking at opportunities to sell digital subscriptions for high-definition streams of live performances.

Multicasting uses less capacity than video on demand.

The current AFL deal has added to Seven and Foxtel?s costs with the pay-TV group disappointed additional AFL matches has not translated into strong subscriber growth.

Flashback to...

Foxtel chief Kim Williams expected his Pay-TV network's subscriptions to "take off like wildfire".

You have to wonder what the AFL says to get people to overpay for something there is no market for...

Don't worry about F&LR nonsense. As I've said before, they're defined by the terms of the original deal and even if 9 do beat a final bid from a rival, the NRL are free to pick the broadcaster that meets their best terms.

I don't see 9 challenging it if they lose the rights either. They don't have the money to do a C7 style hissyfit.

I wonder if the trolls are still convinced that 7 & 10 aren't interested...

To be clear about the 5 or 6 deal thing, that's 9 & Foxtel trying to get extra value out of it. It's cheaper to pay for 2018 now than it will be in 2017. It's just basic economics.

Remember the LEK numbers -

$1b
$1.2b
$1.4b

They've already hit the minimum package estimate over 5 years. The question now is how much more can be extracted through competition and if the NRL can get best quality out of the coverage.

No big deal ED. Most of my work at present is focussed on delivering similar services over the top of the NBN roll out.

ALP are throwing massive amounts of coin at it in the lead up to the next election. The multicasting technology can be configured in a minute for broadcast once the infrastructure is embedded.

The NRL will get in on this party too, but its in its early stages. When the Govt needs good news stories in the lead up to an election, everyone's a winner.

The real worry is when will us Foxtel customers with the sports package that don't watch this Fumbleball shit pay the price for Williams' stuff up? I suspect mere weeks after the NRL TV rights are sewn up and then they'll brazenly blame the NRL rights for the required price hike to cover the losses from the Fumbleball f**kup.

Thats a good point....

Pay for view are decidely fearful of this happening as it would be the end for them.

''Why would someone who is a sports body suddenly want to turn themselves into a media company? You would have to seriously question whether it is a smart move,'' Mr Meagher said.

Oh I don't know how about 500,000x$10 per week for 40 weeks? Even after taking out production costs that is a heck of a lot more than Pay TV will ever stump up.

Watching the HD version of yesterdays knights manly game on fox at the moment, seriously, it is deadset criminal that 9 don't show the game in HD Oz wide, it should be part of the next TV deal that all games are shown in High Def.

I'm well and truly over the delayed telecast. Screw Channel 9 and their delayed showing... I'd rather the game played at the time they want then to have it delayed... If there wasn't delayed games, there wouldn't be illegal Streams... And there would be more $ on our TV deal as a result.

Kinda funny how viewers here in NZ can get HD coverage via Sky of all the games live & uninterrupted (for a price, true) while Aussie fans can't buy that at all.

That's GOT to be the bottom line of these negotiations - keep FTA coverage to satisfy anti-syphoning laws, but complete access to HD for the hardcore fans who want to pay.

Conversely in NZ, the Commission MUST do something about the Godawful state of affairs with FTA rugby league.

Right now, if you don't have Sky Sport it's damn-near impossible to follow the NRL - the Government won't pass any laws because Sky have cash & good lobbyists.

What it needs is a sporting body to look at the bigger picture and put something out there to inspire kids in poor suburbs to play their code instead of any other.

I think over the course of this next tv deal our ratings are going to go up quite a bit (if for no other reason than the vastly improved coverage the game gets). We are also going to see new avenues opening like the ones the AFL are now considering.

I can't help but feel 9 just wants the 6 year as they know it will probably ending up costing them more later (or worse the NRL states looking more into other avenues to broadcast games).

I know i'm not alone on this but i don't watch the delayed games and haven't for quite some time. I can watch 5 games live a week with the 6th game on fox which is similar to a live game (it's delayed but you don't get f*cked over with so many ads). I don't need to subject myself to horrible delayed games.

Maybe i'm spoilt but watching NRL on delay with lots of ads honestly feels like a whole different sport. The great thing about the NRL is that it so fast paced (moreso than any other sport i watch). Live NRL is the best sporting product out there imo and the more of it we can get the better.

Yep for all News Ltd's critics they do present the game well and give great TV coverage. When they get every game live it is going to be even better. Don't know how you can be a fan of the game and not have Fox sports!
