I would be willing to suggest that losing the League will be the death of Channel 9. They're already drowning in debt and are spending millions on their upcoming Olympics coverage.

IT'S officially game on in the NRL's billion-dollar TV battle after league boss David Gallop last night emerged from a day of high-powered meetings with Channel 7 and 10 executives and declared "they are serious about the rights". Heavy-hitters from the rival free-to-air networks were on hand yesterday for separate meetings at Australian Rugby League Commission headquarters as the TV rights negotiations entered stage two.
Heading the Channel 10 team was network chairman Lachlan Murdoch, chief executive James Warburton and chief operating officer Jon Marquard.
Leading the way for Channel 7 was chief executive Tim Worner and highly respected commercial director Bruce McWilliam.
There were genuine fears earlier this week that the NRL would struggle to secure the much-hyped $1 billion deal its been chasing after speculation the initial offers from current rights holders Channel 9 and Fox Sports came in below expectations.

But a clearly confident Gallop told The Daily Telegraph last night: "We were left in no doubt that they are serious about the rights.
"The networks are both enthusiastic about how the game is performing both on and off the field and that was certainly encouraging from our point of view."
Gallop would not divulge details about what was discussed and both Channel 7 or Channel 10 did not want to speak publicly about their bids.
However, The Daily Telegraph understands there could be an unexpected twist to the TV rights battle that may eventually bump the $1 billion target above previous expectations.
There are two scenarios being openly talked about.
One is that Channel 7 will go head-to-head with current free-to-air rights holders Channel 9 for the NRL's jewel in the crown - which is Friday Night football, Sunday afternoon football and all representative fixtures including State of Origin and Test matches.
If that was the case, it would open the door for Channel 10 to unexpectedly take on Fox Sports for the Saturday night and Monday night football coverage although 10 could also challenge 7 and 9 for the main events.
Whichever way it works out, the NRL and its clubs will be the eventual winners because it's understood all three free-to-air networks are determined to share a piece of the rugby league pie.
Given Channel 7 already owns free-to-air AFL rights, it's being speculated that Channel 7 has a vision of taking over as Australian sports' free-to-air TV leaders.
If they got hold of both AFL and NRL, it would also allow them to dominate their rivals and make Channel Seven and Channel Seven Mate the top two rating channels on free-to-air TV.
it would mean NRL would be shown on Channel Seven in NSW and Queensland and on Channel Seven Mate in the southern states - and vice versa in the states where AFL dominates.
Gallop added after an eventful day: "There will be more detailed talks in coming weeks but it was great to move to this phase this week."

Re the Saturday thing with 10, they don't want to repeat their AFL experience. They will take it as long as they're getting a foot in the door on one of the higher profile slots.

ARL Commission chief executive David Gallop said that after meeting executives from the Seven and Ten networks yesterday he was ''very optimistic about achieving a great result'' with the next TV rights deal.
Gallop would not say whether the total earned from the deal needed to be at least $1 billion to be regarded as a great result, but he was upbeat about the negotiations being in full swing and looking forward to further discussions with interested parties.
The rights holders, the Nine network and Fox Sports, made their bids on Monday, at the end of their exclusive three-month negotiating period with the commission. Now the process has been thrown open, and it could be several months before new deals are in place.

''It was great to move to the phase where we could formally talk to Seven and Ten today,'' Gallop said. ''It's fair to say both networks are enthusiastic about how the game is performing, on and off the field. Clearly, this is an encouraging sign from our point of view. We have each agreed to outline the details of our positions more fully in coming weeks, and further meetings will follow that process.''
Gallop, the league's director of strategy and special projects, Shane Mattiske, and league lawyer Tony O'Reilly first met with Ten chairman Lachlan Murdoch, chief executive James Warburton and chief operating officer Jon Marquard. That was followed by the commission trio meeting with Seven's chief executive, Tim Worner, and commercial director Bruce McWilliam.
The networks were keeping things very close to their chests after the meeting. Official offers were not made yesterday, but obviously money - at least in ball-park figure terms - would have been discussed. Gallop, when asked how serious Seven and Ten were when it came to money, was not forthcoming either.
''It's early days and obviously too early to discuss specific financial details,'' Gallop said. ''And, obviously, there is a confidentiality element involved when it comes to any offers we receive.''
There has been enormous speculation about whether the league would hit the magical $1 billion mark - and perhaps even go beyond - with the new rights deal, which would start next year and is planned to run for five years. Industry experts the Herald spoke to yesterday said the end figure would be heavily influenced by how serious Seven and Ten were about bidding, and how much of the league cake they were after.
''They [Seven and Ten] are talking as if they will go in hard, but you never know until it is time to put the money on the table,'' one expert said. ''But things are in motion now, so we're going to find out soon. We have to see how it pans out.''
There have been suggestions that because Nine and Fox Sports entered separate bids on Monday there may have been a change in their thinking, after they had previously joined forces in the bidding process. That has led to speculation that other partnerships could be formed between any two of the interested parties.
But an expert said the only reason Nine and Fox Sports entered separate bids was contractual, so as to protect their rights to first and last bids, and that any further offers from them are expected to be joint bids.
Gallop was keeping things tight about yesterday's meetings, but he did say ''nothing was ruled out'' at this stage by either Seven or Ten in terms of which parts of the league coverage they may be interested in securing.
Asked when he thought the rights deal would be completed, Gallop said: ''It's going to take some time, with no deadlines. I expect the new deals will be in place before the end of the season, but I'm not going to try to predict an exact time.
''We can talk to everyone now. We haven't any further meetings with Nine and Fox Sports scheduled at the moment, but I expect we will be talking to them again soon.''

I'm sure 10 would take Saturday night if they got a Sunday + Monday night game.

As long as it's tying throughout other days it's okay.

They were little brother to 7 with their Saturday deal. Saturday is traditionally a TV graveyard.

They're not looking to lock up 1 day only - they want the coverage to break the other networks news & early prime time strangleholds - therefore it needs to cross over 2-3 days.

If in the scenario where 7 did steal Friday & Sunday, you could write off any chance of a close ratings battle for the next 5 years. But if Channel 10 gets those, then things really get interesting.

Bit of false advertising tonight.

Channel Nines "Live" Friday Night Football is delayed 30 minutes. Mongrels!!!

Lucky i have got the Rugby Union to watch instead.... Live on FOX Sports
.

I would rather watch a replay of yesterdays NRL game than any game of yawnion live.

$1.2b+ minimum

But ... but ... but

Expert in all things rugby league, Mrs Paul Kent, says the NRL's dream of $1b has been shattered.

Sure, he based that assumption off the initial bids from Ch9 and Fox without any real thought about the rest of the bid process, and SURE he admitted to having no idea the magnitude of those initial bids, and SURE I know the old saying 'to assume is to make an ASS out of U and ME' ... but why would this journalist make silly things up like that.

*Please note: I work with journalists on a daily basis and know how scummy and dishonest they can be when writing an agenda piece"

Kent is a sport's journo - not a media journo.

The Australian numbers are accurate - keeping in mind that's for original packaging - not simulcasting.

AFL journalist Andrew Webster repeated it today http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...tes-blues-on-bum/story-e6freye0-1226353392167

Take it as fact that Channel 9 and Fox Sports - which both tabled offers far less than the $1 billion mark - are becoming increasingly bewildered at the lack of access to the game's biggest names.

What is the value of the NRL deal and the what is the value of the new A-league deal?
He also said that if one code gets a billion the other one won’t and that is looking to be pretty much on the money.

Word is that the fox and nine bid at the moment is 790 million
.

According to Steve from the roar $790Mil is the "word"

Wonder is Steve is an AFL fan?
