Are you serious? You've blacklisted an entire station just because they show a footy code that you aren't interested in. Wont you be a conflicted young man if 7 get the rights the NRL as well. Gotta get over the unnecessary hate guys. Its starting to sound like Big Footy in here.

Spot on.

The AFL has space in Sydney because we're generally not hostile to it (although that has changed since they signed two of our players on massive contracts). Until recently most league fans still refer to it as VFL.

AFL fans on the other hand, have a kneejerk negative response to the NRL. I've seen it in the last couple of years of living in Melbourne and Perth - when I mention watching the footy I'm asked something like "Oh the Dockers vs Fisters game?" and I'm like "No, the NRL" and there's invariably this "Ugh!" response. From hairdressers to service station attendents to a mate of mine that moved from Perth to Sydney. There is a genuine hostility toward 'rugby'.

Melbourne bills itself as the sport lovers' capital of Australia but it should really be called the lovers-of-every-sport-but-rugby-league capital. The AFL true believers are determined not to like the NRL, which must mean it is considered a threat. NRL true believers are, of course, the same way, but very few NRL fans are true believers. This is why our crowds and membership numbers aren't that impressive. Most of us would prefer to watch on tv and keep those stupid bumper stickers off our cars. In the AFL states every merkin has a bumper sticker.

Probably means nothing, but I just saw an ad on 7 pushing League. It was them saying that they would have Hindmarsh in talking about how the Eels plan on turning the season around on the news tomorrow.

Now, I'm no industry expert, but why would a channel promote a sport that's on another channel?

Hindy is employed by 7

he's on their news every Friday night with his tips

Nathan Hindmarsh joins Channel Seven News in Sydney

By Alicia B
1 Mar 2012

Football star Nathan Hindmarsh is exclusively joining Seven News as expert rugby league reporter.

Seven News anchor Chris Bath said: “We are very excited to have Nathan on board. His insider’s knowledge of rugby league makes him a huge asset to Seven News for the 2012 NRL season. The fact that he also has a great sense of humour and plays for my team, the mighty Parramatta Eels is also a bonus.”

Described by his peers as one of the most popular players in game, the legendary Parramatta captain has played his entire career at the Eels culminating last year by reaching the magical 300-game mark. Hindmarsh has also played for the NSW State of Origin team and captained the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII.

Hindmarsh will file stories for Seven News, using his league expertise and inside knowledge about the game.

Seven News with Chris Bath at 6pm – Sydney Only.

Why is Hindy employed by 7?

Oh, that's right, because they're serious about getting rugby league. Tie up the drawcards early and everything will be ready come 2013.

SOO rates really well in Melbourne, and when the storm is playing in finals they rate quite well in Melbourne too. I get the impression that the younger generation of Melbournians is less hostile to League.

just for all of you wanting 7.

AFL fans f**king hate them. the coverage is terrible. sit down and watch it some time.

MEGAWALL fmd :crazy::o:?](*,)
shit direction, replays during live play, showing the coach during live play, it's SD, terrible cliched commentary etc etc.

be careful what you wish for with 7, it's likely they'll f**k up the coverage if they get it.

Assuming Seven get the Origin series and a Sunday game surely it'll be specified in the broadcast agreement that SoO will be in HD, so it's basically just one game a week we have to worry about them screwing up

Um no thanks. The paint is drying quite nicely.

In terms of potential F2A NRL game coverage quality: 10 > 7 > 9 in my opinion.

You know what Channel 9 does for the NRL, they've been doing it for sometime. What rabbit do people think they're suddenly going to pull out of their hat?

Channel 7 - the NRL will be on an equal footing with the AFL - in theory. However that means the spotlight will be split.

Channel 10 has a plan to make themselves the NRL network. Whereas both 9 & 10 desperately need the game, Channel 10 are approaching it from a far less arrogant perspective.

Gotts agree. At the moment we get rugby league live in Perth on friday night on GEM while AFL fans get their game at 8.30 Perth time. Thats 10.30 melb time, that must be 3 odd hrs delayed.

I would like them to do for Rugby League what they did for AFL while Nein were screwing our sport in the 90s.

Good Post Doc. Can you imagine how arrogant and full of themselves senile old Rabbits, Phool Gould, Fisty Vautin, Raaaaayyy Hardly and so on will be if they get the rights again? That would just about see me out.

I think rather than 7 being objectively better at sport than 9 the coverage of League really needs a change. Some new blood, a fresh outlook, a chance for someone other than the senile Rabs, Gus and Rayyyy. A big part of the problem is the jobs for the boys method of getting into commentary (that promotes blokes like Lockyer who should be in commentary like a one legged bloke should be in the Olympic athletics team). Like it or not that's the image League projects and having blokes like Fittler and A Johns as the voice of the game is harmful to how the wider public sees it. The feeling is 7 will be more resilient to that kind of thing because they're not part of the machine.

Wallabies games look great because Fox produce and broadcast them. 7 just steal the feed.

Not sure about the current situation, but as of last year they produced independently. They shared a split of the cameras, but switched and directed themselves. They had their own crews such as graphics, stats, audio and fm, and both fox and 7 had their OB trucks parked up adjacent to each other at the stadiums.

May have changed since, but this was the case last I saw.

Strong point about the Jobs for the Boys approach, Freddie and Joey giggling like schoolgirls at lowbrow "humour" was born old and quicly got older. The weakness in that argument seems to be that, from the very little that I watch of AFL, it seems to be fairly prevalent there as well.
